Differences in HIV testing and receipt of results between adolescent and non-adolescent women in Uganda.

Despite notable increase in HIV testing among Uganda's women from 25% in 2006 to 71% in 2011, HIV testing among adolescent women remains very low at 45.5%. This study assesses differences in HIV testing and receipt of results (HTR) between adolescent and non-adolescent women in Uganda. The differences were decomposed into components attributed to variation in characteristics and variation in effects of characteristics in the two groups. The assessment was based on data sourced from 2011 Uganda Demographic Health Survey. Statistical analysis was done using a Non-linear Oaxaca' Blinder Multivari

Rural Mexican-American adolescent sexual risk behavior.

CONTEXT: There is a need for community-based, culturally sensitive, cognitive-behavioral interventions to reduce sexual risk behavior among minority adolescents. Studies of adolescent risk and protective behaviors have focused on identifying modifiable psychosocial variables that predict differential outcomes for subsequent intervention efforts. Research has been scarce in studies of rural minority adolescent women. PURPOSE: To examine the protective and risk behaviors of these rural Mexican-American adolescent women and their relationship to physical or sexual abuse. METHODS: Mexican-Americ

The mediation effect of glucocorticoid receptor gene (NR3C1) methylation between childhood maltreatment and depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescents: A 2-year longitudinal study.

This three-wave longitudinal study examined whether methylation alterations in promoter exon 1F of a stress-related gene-NR3C1 (NR3C1-1F)-explained the longitudinal associations between childhood maltreatment and adolescent depressive symptoms. A total of 370 Han Chinese adolescents (Mage  = 16.31 ± 1.28 years; 51.4% girls) recruited from Shandong, China were tracked from 2018 to 2020. The results showed that the severity of childhood maltreatment, especially that of emotional abuse and physical neglect, conferred risk for adolescent depressive symptoms via reducing NR3C1-1F methylation levels

Adolescent bulimia nervosa.

Onset of bulimia nervosa (BN) typically occurs in adolescence and is frequently accompanied by medical and psychiatric sequelae that may have detrimental effects on adolescent development. Potentially serious medical consequences and high comorbid rates of mood disorders and suicidality underscore the need for early recognition and effective treatments. Research among adolescents with BN has lagged behind that of adults, although evidence is accumulating to support the efficacy of family-based interventions and cognitive behavioral treatments that are adapted for use with adolescent population…

Bonded porcelain veneer masking of dark tetracycline dentinal stains.

Resin-bonded porcelain veneer restorations can attractively mask dark dentinal tooth discoloration caused by tetracycline staining. When placing these restorations, special attention must be given to tooth preparation, handling of the porcelain, and veneer thickness. When treating adolescent patients whose occlusal development is not as yet completed, there are additional special considerations. This case report describes the placement of 6 resin-bonded porcelain veneer restorations in an adolescent patient to conceal dark tetracycline staining. Emphasis is placed on proper tooth preparation a

Sex differences in associations between hair glucocorticoids and internalizing symptoms in adolescents.

From adolescence onwards, internalizing symptoms, such as depressive and anxiety symptoms, are twice as prevalent in adolescent girls than boys. Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which controls production and regulation of glucocorticoids (cortisol and cortisone), is linked to depressive and anxiety symptoms. Findings on hair cortisol, cortisone and the cortisol/cortisone ratio in relation to these symptoms have been inconsistent, particularly in adolescent community samples. The ratio provides an indication of the active versus inactive balance of cortisol concen

Adjustment problems and emerging personality characteristics from early to late adolescence.

This 6-year longitudinal study extended earlier findings of contextual influences on adolescent adjustment problems by examining relationships between adolescent emotional and behavioral problems and late adolescent personality among more than 400 youths who were followed from 7th grade to the last year of high school. Results suggest that psychological distress and behavioral problems experienced during the adolescent years (7th-10th grades) are significantly related to personality structure during the final year of high school (12th grade). Psychological distress in adolescence was primarily

Community youth teams facilitating participatory adolescent groups, youth leadership activities and livelihood promotion to improve school attendance, dietary diversity and mental health among adolescent girls in rural eastern India: protocol for a cluster-randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Improving the health and development of adolescents aged 10-19 years is a global health priority. One in five adolescents globally live in India. The Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK), India's national adolescent health strategy, recommends supporting community-based peer educators to conduct group meetings with boys and girls. Groups aim to give adolescents a space to discuss the social and health issues affecting them and build their capacity to become active community members and leaders. There have been no evaluations of the community component of RKSK to date. In this

Microglia dynamics in adolescent traumatic brain injury.

Repetitive, mild traumatic brain injuries (RmTBIs) are increasingly common in adolescents and encompass one of the largest neurological health concerns in the world. Adolescence is a critical period for brain development where RmTBIs can substantially impact neurodevelopmental trajectories and life-long neurological health. Our current understanding of RmTBI pathophysiology suggests key roles for neuroinflammation in negatively regulating neural health and function. Microglia, the brain's resident immune population, play important roles in brain development by regulating neuronal number, and s

Psychosexual development and eating disorders.

The relationship among eating disorders (EDs), psychosexual and identity development, and physical maturation (puberty) is reviewed. The developmental tasks of adolescence are summarized, and research from both community studies and clinical samples on the association between the development of an ED and putative risk factors that include pubertal development and psychosexual behaviors and attitudes for children and adolescents is reviewed. Specific issues explored include the role of child and adolescent abuse and EDs in males. Overall evidence suggests the following: there are inconsistent f

Childhood hyperactivity/inattention and eating disturbances predict binge eating in adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Identifying childhood predictors of binge eating and understanding risk mechanisms could help improve prevention and detection efforts. The aim of this study was to examine whether features of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as well as childhood eating disturbances, predicted binge eating later in adolescence. METHOD: We studied specific risk factors for the development of binge eating during mid-adolescence among 7120 males and females from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), a cohort study of children in the UK, using data from multiple

Vitamin D and Exercise Performance in Female Adolescent Athletes.

Vitamin D is both a required nutrient and a hormone and is necessary for growth and protein metabolism. Adolescence is a major period of growth and development, and thus, it is logical to consider how vitamin D may play a role in this stage of life. Our review specifically aims to examine the ways in which vitamin D intake affects female adolescent athletes. Although there is a paucity of data on the vitamin D status of adolescent female athletes, present data show that vitamin D status is below optimal concentrations in many athletes, especially in female athletes who primarily train indoors.

Alcohol consumption during adolescence alters the hippocampal response to traumatic brain injury.

Binge drinking is the consumption of large volumes of alcohol in short periods and exerts its effects on the central nervous system, including the hippocampus. We have previously shown that binge drinking alters mitochondrial dynamics and induces neuroinflammation in the hippocampus of adolescent rats. Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), is regularly linked to alcohol consumption and share mechanisms of brain damage. In this context, we hypothesized that adolescent binge drinking could prime the development of brain damage generated by mTBI. We found that alcohol binge drinking induced by the

Parental attachment style: examination of links with parent secure base provision and adolescent secure base use.

The secure base construct represents one of attachment theory's most important contributions to our understanding of parent-child relationships and child development. The present study represents the first examination of how parents' self-reported attachment styles relate to parental secure base provision and adolescent (mean age = 16.6 years, SE = .59) secure base use during an observed parent-adolescent interaction. Further, the present study is the first to examine how fathers', as well as mothers', attachment styles relate to observed behavior in a parent-child interaction. At the bivariat
