Dorsal and Ventral Parts of Thalamic Nucleus Submedius Project to Different Areas of Rat Orbitofrontal Cortex: A Single Neuron-Tracing Study Using Virus Vectors.

The rodent orbitofrontal cortex is involved in a variety of cognitive and behavioral functions that require thalamic input to be successfully expressed. Although the thalamic nucleus submedius (Sm) is a major source of afferents to the orbitofrontal cortex, thalamocortical projection from the Sm has not been fully elucidated. In the present study, we first divided the rat Sm into dorsal and ventral parts according to the distribution of vesicular glutamate transporter 2-immunoreactive varicosities, which were somatosensory afferents from the brain stem. Subsequently we investigated dendritic a

Reinnervation of atonic bladder after conus medullaris injury using a modified nerve crossover technique in canines.

BACKGROUND: Neurogenic bladder represents a major cause of morbidity in patients with spinal cord injuries (SCI). Herein, we evaluated a novel reconstructive surgical technique designed to restore afferent and efferent nerve function in atonic bladder caused by conus medullaris injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A new reflex pathway was established by extradural transfer of the left L5 ventral root (VR) to the left S2 VR root together with extradural postganglionic spinal nerve transfer of the L5 dorsal root (DR) to the S2 DR with a nerve graft in a canine model. The corresponding nerves on the r

Expression of neuropeptides and nitric oxide synthase in neurones innervating the inflamed rat urinary bladder.

Micturition reflexes become hyperexcitable with the development of a cystitis. In the present study the question is addressed, whether alterations in the expression of neuropeptides and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in the neuronal pathways to the bladder may be involved in the hyperexcitability. Primary sensory neurones in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) L1, L2, L6 and S1 as well as postganglionic efferent neurones in the major pelvic ganglia (MPG) that innervate the rat urinary bladder were labeled with retrogradely transported Fast Blue (FB). Immunocytochemical techniques were used to determine

Neurochemical Signalling Associated With Gill Oxygen Sensing and Ventilation: A Receptor Focused Mini-Review.

Despite the large body of work describing vertebrate ventilatory responses to hypoxia, remarkably little is known about the receptors and afferent pathways mediating these responses in fishes. In this review, we aim to summarize all receptor types to date implicated in the neurotransmission or neuromodulation associated with O2 sensing in the gills of fish. This includes serotonergic, cholinergic, purinergic, and dopaminergic receptor subtypes. Recent transcriptomic analysis of the gills of zebrafish using single-cell RNA sequencing has begun to elucidate specific receptor targets in the gill;…

Neuroanatomy and Imaging Assessment in Traumatic Brain Injury.

Concussion is a common injury in childhood with an estimated 1.4 million children sustaining concussions annually in the United States. While many concussions occur in the sports and recreation setting, it is important to recognize that non-sports and recreation activities are also common causes of concussion in childhood. Since neurologic projections associated with the afferent and efferent visual system are widely distributed throughout the brain and thought to comprise over 50% of brain function, it is not surprising that the diffuse sear injury associated with concussion often produces vi

[Vascular syndromes of the thalamus].

The thalamus comprises numerous nuclei that can be grouped into five major functional domains: (1) the reticular and intralaminar nuclei influence arousal and nociception, (2) sensory nuclei handle afferent pathways, (3) the effector nuclei are involved in motor function and language, (4) associative nuclei participate in higher cognitive functions and (5) limbic nuclei influence mood and motivation. The thalamic nuclei are mainly supplied by the following four cerebral arteries: paramedian artery, anterior thalamoperforating artery, thalamogeniculate artery and posterior choroidal artery (lat…

Familial occipital and nervus intermedius neuralgia in a Swiss family.

Familial trigeminal neuralgia has been reported in 1-2% of cases consistent with an autosomal dominant inheritance. We present a Swiss family with several members suffering from occipital and nervus intermedius neuralgia alone or in combination. We suggest that peripheral sensory anastomoses or central convergence of afferent pathways could explain neuralgia affecting two cranial nerves. The pedigree has two main characteristics: (1) affected individuals in two generations and (2) in the first generation the father is affected, in the second generation all women are affected, and none of the m…

Gabapentin in the management of dysautonomia following severe traumatic brain injury: a case series.

The pharmacological management of dysautonomia, otherwise known as autonomic storms, following acute neurological insults, is problematic and remains poorly researched. This paper presents six subjects with dysautonomia following extremely severe traumatic brain injury where gabapentin controlled paroxysmal autonomic changes and posturing in the early post-acute phase following limited success with conventional medication regimens. In two subjects, other medications were reduced or ceased without a recurrence of symptoms. It is proposed that medications that can block or minimise abnormal affe

Cortical evoked potentials in response to trigeminus nerve stimulation in humans.

A standard technique for recording trigeminal somatosensory evoked potentials (TEP) in response to stimulation of the second branch of the trigeminus nerve is described. Thirty-six nerves of 18 apparently healthy subjects have been investigated. A characteristic polyphasic wave was repeatedly observed. It consisted mainly of a P20, N30, P40, N50 sequence of deflections. Intraindividual variations were minimal. The response pattern varied according to the positions of the recording and stimulating electrodes. The method is useful in detecting functional integrity of the afferent pathways of the…

Perceptions and pathophysiology of dyspnea and exercise intolerance.

Dyspnea is a complex psychophysiologic sensation that requires intact afferent and efferent pathways for the full perception of the neuromechanical dissociation between the respiratory effort attempted and the work actually accomplished. The sensation is triggered or accentuated by a variety of receptors located in the chest wall, respiratory muscles, lung parenchyma, carotid body, and brain stem. The sensation of dyspnea is stronger in patients with higher scores for anxiety and has been reported in patients with anxiety disorders with no cardiopulmonary disease. These observations demonstrat

Pharmacotherapy for intestinal motor and sensory disorders.

Motor disorders of the gastrointestinal tract are characterized by definable impairments of gut contractile function. Other conditions exhibit specific disturbances of visceral afferent and efferent activity, which may underlie selected symptom complexes. Medications in several classes have been developed to treat these disorders of gastrointestinal function. Prokinetic agents are effective therapies for ailments with reduced motor function, whereas antispasmodic drugs reduce symptoms in conditions with exaggerated pressure wave activity. Recently, medications designed to blunt transmission in

Influence of central depressant drugs on pupil function: an evaluation with the pupil cycle induction test.

Afferent pupillary defect is an early sign of optic nerve or chiasm disease. It can be evaluated by the Pupil Cycle Induction Test (PCIT) which assesses the difficulty in setting up regular and sustained pupil oscillations. PCIT was carried out in 30 subjects with presumably normal visual function (normal visual acuity and normal fundi) and taking benzodiazepines and/or barbiturates. In 42 out of the 60 tested eyes, response to PCIT was altered. This emphasizes the necessity of a detailed drug-taking history when investigating anterior visual pathways by means of pupil function, especially whe

[Masticatory cycles of the rumination type in vagotomized lambs].

Contractions of the fluid-filled RR dependent upon the activity of the myenteric plexus were observed within 2 weeks after vagotomy in sheep maintained on a liquid diet. Spontaneous but not adrenergic evoked rumination was recorded beyond the 5th week after vagotomy. The observation of ruminating-like activity during 120 to 200 min per day in chronically-vagotomized sheep indicates that the onset of rumination does not require a gastric afferent pathway.

Non-invasive stimulation of vagal afferents reduces gastric frequency.

Metabolic feedback between the gut and the brain relayed via the vagus nerve contributes to energy homeostasis. We investigated in healthy adults whether non-invasive stimulation of vagal afferents impacts energy homeostasis via efferent effects on metabolism or digestion. In a randomized crossover design, we applied transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) while recording efferent metabolic effects using simultaneous electrogastrography (EGG) and indirect calorimetry. We found that taVNS reduced gastric myoelectric frequency (p = .008), but did not alter resting energy expendi

Pathophysiological mechanisms in detrusor underactivity: Novel experimental findings.

Underactive bladder (UAB) is a multifactorial symptom complex often related to detrusor underactivity (DU). Although recognized as a common cause of lower urinary tract symptoms and with significant effects on quality of life, UAB/DU is largely underresearched. Herein, we review up-to-date knowledge on the pathophysiological mechanisms of UAB/DU, with an emphasis on the relationship between UAB and bladder outlet obstruction (BOO). Original articles and reviews concerning UAB/DU were identified through a search of the PubMed/Medline and Scopus databases. DU can result from several pathological

Transcutaneous electrical stimulation of somatic afferent nerves in the foot relieved symptoms related to postoperative bladder spasms.

BACKGROUND: Bladder spasm is a common side effect of urological surgery. Main treatment modalities include opioids or anticholinergic medication; however, bladder spasms still occur even after these interventions. Recent studies indicate that transcutaneous stimulation of the foot can result in 50% increase in bladder capacity in healthy adults, and inhibit bladder detrusor overactivity in spinal cord injured patients. In this study, we examined the effects of transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the foot on bladder spasms related symptoms. METHODS: Sixty-six male patients who underwent p

Localization of orofacial representation in the corona radiata, internal capsule and cerebral peduncle in Macaca mulatta.

Subcortical white matter injury is often accompanied by orofacial motor dysfunction, but little is known about the structural substrates accounting for these common neurological deficits. Functional role of peripheral opioid receptors in the regulation of cardiac spinal afferent nerve activity during myocardial ischemia.

Thinly myelinated Aδ-fiber and unmyelinated C-fiber cardiac sympathetic (spinal) sensory nerve fibers are activated during myocardial ischemia to transmit the sensation of angina pectoris. Although recent observations showed that myocardial ischemia increases the concentrations of opioid peptides and that the stimulation of peripheral opioid receptors inhibits chemically induced visceral and somatic nociception, the role of opioids in cardiac spinal afferent signaling during myocardial ischemia has not been studied. The present study tested the hypothesis that peripheral opioid receptors modul
