Substandard acuity in the healthy looking eye.

With proper spectacle correction, the healthy human eye is capable of seeing 20/20. Common causes of reduced vision, such as cataracts and macular degeneration, are easily detected during routine examination. In many cases, however, patients present with reduced vision for which no obvious etiology is immediately apparent. This paper deals with the most common of such presentations. Entities to be discussed include amblyopia, hysteria/malingering, monofixation syndrome, partial albinism, subtle macula disease, and occult optic nerve disease.

Artificial intelligence-aided diagnosis and treatment in the field of optometry.

With the rapid development of computer technology, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to ophthalmology has gained prominence in modern medicine. As modern optometry is closely related to ophthalmology, AI research on optometry has also increased. This review summarizes current AI research and technologies used for diagnosis in optometry, related to myopia, strabismus, amblyopia, optical glasses, contact lenses, and other aspects. The aim is to identify mature AI models that are suitable for research on optometry and potential algorithms that may be used in future clinical practice…

Ophthalmic findings in Frank-ter Haar syndrome: report of a sibling pair.

Frank-ter Haar syndrome (FTHS) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by abnormalities that affect the development of bone, heart, and eyes. We report a sibling pair with FTHS caused by a homozygous, novel mutation pLys133Glnfs*13 in the SH3PXD2B gene: one sibling had bilateral ocular hypertension and unilateral colobomas of iris, choroid and retina; the other, unilateral myelinated nerve fiber layer of the optic disk and papilledema due to idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Both children had refractive amblyopia and megalocornea.

Regression of myelinated retinal nerve fibers in a glaucomatous eye.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to present a case of a patient with primary open angle glaucoma and poorly controlled intraocular pressure, who underwent photodocumented atrophy of myelinated retinal nerve fibers. CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old woman with high myopia, refractive amblyopia, and extensive myelination of retinal nerve fibers underwent profound atrophy and regression of the myelination during an 8-year period. CONCLUSIONS: Myelinated retinal nerve fibers can atrophy and regress because of neurodegenerative conditions such as glaucoma.

[Critical frequency of flashes fusion in differential diagnosis of vision disorders in children].

Critical frequency of fusion of flashes (CFFF) was measured in children by CFFF-D device recommended for clinical trials by the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of the Russian Federation (Protocol No. 4 of June 13, 1996). A total of 213 children with central and peripheral retinal abiotrophy, partial atrophy of the optic nerve, refraction and dysbinocular amblyopia, and healthy children were examined. The most expressed changes of CFFF were observed in children with optic nerve atrophy. The CFFF-D device provides reliable results for the diagnosis.

Oculomotor biofeedback therapy.

Biofeedback therapy refers to the process of gaining voluntary control over some bodily function by the immediate use of information regarding its physiological state. In this paper we review the use of oculomotor biofeedback therapy in three common ocular disorders: nystagmus, strabismus, and amblyopia. Experimental and clinical test results have been encouraging. We believe oculomotor biofeedback therapy should be attempted, either alone or in conjunction with orthoptic and/or surgical procedures, in these and other ocular disorders manifesting an abnormal oculomotor component.

Contact lenses in the case of the very young child.

Many hereditary congenital and infectious ocular conditions affecting young infants and children if diagnosed early enough are no longer untreatable. Special contact lenses are now available and have been specifically developed to prevent blindness, amblyopia and establish binocular vision. Different types of contact lenses and materials from which they may be fashioned are discussed and clinical considerations outlined for treatment. Visual rehabilitation of a high order is possible with proper understanding of the particular problems affecting babies at birth, later and in early infancy.

Infant vision testing by a behavioral method.

A behavioral method of screening binocular infant vision called forced choice preferential looking (FPL) has been developed. Clinical trials of the FPL test for young infants are reported here. The test aids nonspecialized personnel in early identification of bilateral ocular abnormalities and anomalies of binocular cooperation (strabismus). It is not possible to screen for monocular eye disease or amblyopia with this test. Modifications of the FPL test may offer new ways of assessing other aspects of visual function early in life.

Unilateral congenital cataracts and their management.

Eight cases of unilateral congenital cataract were operated in the first two years of life. They were treated with contact lenses fitted within the first three weeks postoperatively and with patching of the good eye. None of these eyes achieved better than 3/100 vision. This dense amblyopia would seem based on the marked refractive difference. In addition to the ocular aspects, the psychological aspects of this evaluation would indicate that such surgery and postoperative management is probably not indicated for unilateral congenital cataracts.

Pattern electroretinography response in amblyopic adults.

INTRODUCTION: Amblyopia is generally a unilateral disorder, defined by at least a difference of two lines of visual acuity between both eyes with the best-corrected visual acuity, a decrease in contrast sensitivity, and a decrease in stereopsis. Pattern electroretinogram (PERG) is a noninvasive technique that provides a retinal biopotential and is a highly sensitive indicator of changes in the macular area. Our aim was to evaluate if there are differences in the retinal response of an amblyopic eye compared with a normal eye (NE). METHODS: We evaluated twenty-four adult volunteers, twelve amb…

Vision recovery with perceptual learning and non-invasive brain stimulation: Experimental set-ups and recent results, a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Vision is the sense which we rely on the most to interact with the environment and its integrity is fundamental for the quality of our life. However, around the globe, more than 1 billion people are affected by debilitating vision deficits. Therefore, finding a way to treat (or mitigate) them successfully is necessary. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review aims to examine options for innovative treatment of visual disorders (retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, optic neuropathy, refractory disorders, hemianopia, amblyopia), especially with Perceptual Learning (PL) and Electrical…
