[Experiences with continuous wear of silicone lenses (author's transl)].

Experiences with continuous wear of silicone lenses in 66 aphakic eyes are reported. By a careful fitting a long-term wearing has been obtained, the lenses were well tolerated in all cases. There was no vascularisation of the cornea. Three cases of temporary infiltration of the cornea have occured.

[Operation on a congenital cataract in a Siberian Tiger].

A cataract operation in a young Siberian tiger is reported. This 5-month-old tiger, presenting with blindness, showed bilateral residual pupillary membranes and anterior polar cataracts combined with nuclear cataracts. After unilateral intracapsular extraction of the lens, the tiger adapted well to the improvement in sight and behaved almost like an animal with normal vision. The animal died 3 months post-operatively from unknown cause. Histological examination of the aphakic eye showed, at the site of operation on the cornea, an intact epithelium with discrete infiltration of the stroma toget

Aphakic glaucoma.

The cause of aphakic glaucoma should always be determined because treatment must be directed towards the aetiological mechanism. We have defined early aphakic glaucoma as that occurring within the first 6 postoperative weeks and late aphakic glaucoma as occurring at any later time. Of the various causes of glaucoma in each category, among the most serious and challenging to treat are pupillary block and angle closure. These emanate from postoperative shallow or empty anterior chambers which are associated with wound fistula, choroidal detachment, or a combination of both. Other mechanisms prod

Peripheral corneal oedema following cataract extraction (Brown-McLean syndrome).

We describe the clinical features of 21 eyes of 15 patients who developed peripheral bullous corneal oedema following cataract extraction. T … e peripheral corneal oedema 12 patients (18 eyes) continued to wear contact lenses to correct their aphakia.

Is aspirin use associated with lower rates of cataracts in diabetic individuals?

The relationship between a history of aspirin use and cataracts in diabetic individuals is examined in this report from a population-based study of 1370 individuals who developed diabetes after 30 yr of age. After pupil dilation lenses were examined for the presence and severity of nuclear sclerotic and posterior subcapsular cataracts and for surgical aphakia. A history of aspirin usage was obtained. Seven hundred eighty-four individuals had used aspirin in the month before the exam. There was no relationship between such usage and cataracts. For 338 people who reported using aspirin daily for…

Phaco-Ersatz: cataract surgery designed to preserve accommodation.

Phaco-Ersatz represents a new approach to cataract surgery and the correction of aphakia. The procedure involves the removal of the cataractous cortex and nucleus while preserving the lens capsule and its zonular attachments. The empty lens capsule is then refilled with biocompatible and optically suitable clear gel. A physiologic lens is recreated in situ. Experimental work with human cadaver eyes and rabbit and cat eyes in vivo demonstrates this surgical feasibility. A review of the literature reveals contradicting theories regarding the physical laws and lens properties governing accommodat…

[Influence of luminous intensity, contrast and color on vision in patients with slight to severe visual defects (author's transl)].

Visual acuity was measured as a function of illuminance (1X; illumination vertical from above) or luminance (cd/m2; illumination of transparent texts from below) for various pathologic alterations of the eye accompanied by a decrease in visual performance (myopia magna with/without retinopathia myopica, astigmatism, senile cataract, aphakia after congenital cataract, macular degeneration, glaucoma etc.) with positive and negative contrast of reading texts. The degree of visual acuity in relation to illuminance or luminance is characteristic for each ocular disease, so that individual adjustmen…

Microforceps-Assisted Transscleral Fixation of Intraocular Lens.

PURPOSE: This study presents a novel technique for intraocular lens (IOL) fixation. The technique can be used on single-piece acrylic IOLs and can manage patients who are either with aphakia or with a dislocated IOL. METHODS: One end of the Gore-Tex suture is tied into the optic-haptic junction of the IOL. Another end is fixated on the scleral wall. The single-sclerotomy and double-sclerotomy settings can be applied to different situations. RESULTS: Twelve eyes received this procedure. After a follow-up period of up to 20 months, the IOLs were well centered. CONCLUSION: The technique is a r…
