The olfactory basis of orchid pollination by mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes are important vectors of disease and require sources of carbohydrates for reproduction and survival. Unlike host-related behaviors of mosquitoes, comparatively less is understood about the mechanisms involved in nectar-feeding decisions, or how this sensory information is processed in the mosquito brain. Here we show that Aedes spp. mosquitoes, including Aedes aegypti, are effective pollinators of the Platanthera obtusata orchid, and demonstrate this mutualism is mediated by the orchid's scent and the balance of excitation and inhibition in the mosquito's antennal lobe (AL). The P.

Nymphal Ixodes scapularis questing behavior explains geographic variation in Lyme borreliosis risk in the eastern United States.

Most people who contract Lyme borreliosis in the eastern United States (US) acquire infection from the bite of the nymphal life stage of the vector tick Ixodes scapularis, which is present in all eastern states. Yet <5% of Lyme borreliosis cases are reported from outside the north-central and northeastern US. Geographical differences in nymphal questing (i.e., host-seeking behavior) may be epidemiologically important in explaining this latitudinal gradient in Lyme borreliosis incidence. Using field enclosures and a 'common garden' experimental design at two field sites, we directly tested this

Ketogenic diet and anorexia nervosa.

This hypothesis suggest that starvation-induced ketosis, which leads to a fundamental biochemical change in the metabolic fuel supply of the brain, is uniquely anxiolytic and rewarding to patients prone to AN. Ketosis can easily be replicated by a unique diet marked by high fat, moderate protein, and very low carbohydrate. This diet, known as a ketogenic diet (KGD) mimics starvation, thus allowing the patient to experience the anxiolytic state of ketosis, and yet avoid the morbidity of starvation.

Behavioural responses of the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais, to host (stored-grain) and non-host plant volatiles.

BACKGROUND: Four-arm olfactometer bioassays were conducted to assess the behavioural responses of the adult maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), to harvested seeds of host plants, i.e. white maize, yellow maize (Zea mays L.) and winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) (Poaceae), and non-host plant materials, i.e. alligator pepper, Aframomum melegueta (Rosk) K. Schum (Zingiberaceae), rhizomes of ginger, Zingiber officinale (Roscoe) (Zingiberaceae), and West African black pepper, Piper guineense Thonn and Schum (Piperaceae). Additional bioassays with host plant

Synergism between ammonia, lactic acid and carboxylic acids as kairomones in the host-seeking behaviour of the malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto (Diptera: Culicidae).

Host odours play a major role in the orientation and host location of blood-feeding mosquitoes. Anopheles gambiae Giles sensu stricto, which is the most important malaria vector in Africa, is a highly anthropophilic mosquito species, and the host-seeking behaviour of the females of this mosquito is guided by volatiles of human origin. Ammonia, lactic acid and several carboxylic acids are known to be present in the human odour blend. We investigated the effect of these compounds on naive female mosquitoes using a dual-port olfactometer. Ammonia was an attractant on its own, whereas lactic acid

Roles of corticotropin-releasing factor, neuropeptide Y and corticosterone in the regulation of food intake in Xenopus laevis.

In mammals, hypothalamic control of food intake involves counterregulation of appetite by an orexigenic peptides such as corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), and orexigenic peptides such as neuropeptide Y (NPY). Glucocorticoids also stimulate food intake by inhibiting CRF while facilitating NPY actions. To gain a better understanding of the diversity and evolution of neuroendocrine feeding controls in vertebrates, we analysed the effects of CRF, NPY and glucocorticoids on food intake in juvenile Xenopus laevis. We also analysed brain CRF and NPY mRNA content and plasma corticosterone concentr

An anorexic lipid mediator regulated by feeding.

Oleylethanolamide (OEA) is a natural analogue of the endogenous cannabinoid anandamide. Like anandamide, OEA is produced in cells in a stimulus-dependent manner and is rapidly eliminated by enzymatic hydrolysis, suggesting a function in cellular signalling. However, OEA does not activate cannabinoid receptors and its biological functions are still unknown. Here we show that, in rats, food deprivation markedly reduces OEA biosynthesis in the small intestine. Administration of OEA causes a potent and persistent decrease in food intake and gain in body mass. This anorexic effect is behaviourally

Repeated mazindol and methamphetamine administration produces cross-sensitization to stereotyped behavior induced by these agents in rats.

The cross-sensitization to stereotyped behavior between mazindol (MZD) and methamphetamine (MAP) was investigated in rats. MZD (5 and 10 mg/kg/day, p.o.), MAP (5 and 10 mg/kg/day, p.o.) and saline (1 ml/kg, p.o.) were administered once daily for a week. Challenge with MZD (10 mg/kg, p.o.) on the 8th day caused markedly stereotyped behavior in MAP-pretreated group compared with the saline-pretreated control group. MAP (10 mg/kg, p.o.)-induced stereotyped behavior on the 8th day was also greater in MZD-pretreated group rather than the saline-pretreated control group. These results suggest that r

Increased sodium appetite stimulates c-fos expression in the organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis.

The relation between c-fos expression in the forebrain of Lister hooded rats and water and NaCl intakes was examined in response to systemic injection of angiotensin II, desoxycorticosterone, angiotensin II and desoxycorticosterone together, frusemide or low sodium diet, all treatments that induce a sodium appetite. Angiotensin II (1 mg/kg subcutaneously) caused significant increases in the 1-h intakes of water and 1.8% NaCl compared to controls, the effect on water intake being the greater. There was a similar increase in NaCl intake after four days' treatment with desoxycorticosterone (20 mg

Tolerance and cross tolerance to the accuracy- and rate-decreasing effects of mu opioids in rats responding under a fixed-consecutive-number schedule.

The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the development of tolerance to the effects of morphine and other mu opioids in rats responding under a fixed-consecutive-number (FCN) schedule of food presentation. To this end, five rats were trained under an FCN schedule and subsequently tested with a variety of mu opioids both before and during chronic exposure to a 0.4 mg/ml morphine drinking solution. Morphine, fentanyl, buprenorphine, butorphanol and nalbuphine produced dose-dependent decreases in both accuracy and response rate when tested prior to the chronic regimen. In most ins

Subdiaphragmatic vagotomy does not influence the anorectic effect of amylin.

Amylin injected IP reduced food intake for 2-4 h in subdiaphragmatically vagotomized and in sham-vagotomized rats. The magnitude of the anorectic effect of 0.5 microgram/kg amylin was similar to that of 2.5 micrograms/kg amylin but the duration of the effect was somewhat shorter with the low dose. Amylin (1 microgram/kg, IP) had no influence on gastric emptying. In conclusion, the hypophagic effect of peripherally administered amylin does not depend on an intact abdominal vagus or on an indirect effect via gastric emptying. It may therefore be hypothesized that amylin has a central site of act

Effects of benzodiazepine receptor partial inverse agonists in the elevated plus maze test of anxiety in the rat.

The present series of experiments examined the effects of five benzodiazepine receptor (BZR) partial inverse agonists on the behaviour of rats on an elevated plus maze. The drugs were tested in a standard plus maze with 3-cm walls added to the open arms, as this has been shown to increase the sensitivity of the plus maze to anxiogenic-like drugs effects (Jones and Cole 1995). The drugs tested were FG 7142 (0-100 mg/kg), beta-CCE (0-30 mg/kg), ZK 132,556 (0-100 mg/kg), ZK 90 886 (0-30 mg/kg) and Ro 15-4513 (0-30 mg/kg). Behavioral studies with the beta-carboline FG 7142 combined with related drugs in monkeys.

The beta-carboline FG 7142 was studied alone and in combination with Ro 15-1788, CGS 8216 and lorazepam in squirrel monkeys trained to respond under a fixed-interval (FI) schedule of food presentation. FG 7142 (0.3-5.6 mg/kg i.v.) produced dose-related decreases in the rate of FI responding, effects opposite to those of moderate doses of lorazepam (0.03-0.3 mg/kg i.v.). Pretreatment with low doses of Ro 15-1788 (0.1 and 0.3 mg/kg i.v.) shifted the dose-response curve of FG 7142 progressively to the right indicating pharmacological antagonism at benzodiazepine recognition sites. In comparison,

Selective attenuation of sweetened milk consumption by opiate receptor antagonists in male and female rats of the Roman strains.

Male and female rats of the three Roman strains (Roman High-, Roman Low-, and Roman Control Avoidance; RHA, RLA and RCA, respectively) were familiarized with a highly palatable sweetened milk in a daily 30 min test. The animals were never food- or water-deprived prior to the test. Daily milk intake stabilised at a high level before drug tests were initiated. Effects of naloxone, diprenorphine, WIN 44,441-3, MR2266, MR2267, and ICI 154129 on milk consumption were investigated. Naloxone, diprenorphine and MR2266 each had comparable anorectic effects across strains and sexes. WIN 44,441-3 was rel

Are peptides truly satiety agents? A method of testing for neurohumoral satiety effects.

Because controversy exists as to the interpretation of the known feeding-suppressive effects of various neuropeptides, we attempted to construct a model that could differentiate satiety from other nonspecific effects. Reasoning that a satiety factor should be less inhibiting of feeding in a hungrier animal, whereas aversive agents should be unaffected by hunger, we studied the neuropharmacologic dose responses of five substances administered peripherally to rats at two different degrees of starvation. Included were four neuropeptides with putative satiety effects: cholecystokinin, calcitonin,

Adjunctive drinking and the pituitary-adrenal response: effects of prior aversive stimulation (preshock).

Two groups of rats were exposed to an intermittent food schedule which induced polydipsia. One group of rats had previously been exposed to inescapable shock. This group showed reduced amounts of polydipsia, and the polydipsia was ineffective in reducing arousal levels (relative to those of the control group), as indexed by plasma corticosterone levels.

(--)-threo-Chlorocitric acid: a novel anorectic agent.

A new class of peripherally acting anorectics is described in these studies. The four stereoisomers of chlorocitric acid which are structurally similar to the known anorectic, (--)-threo-hydroxycitric acid, all suppressed food intake when administered at high doses to rats. Only one of these isomers, (--)-threo-chlorocitric acid, retained its anorectic activity at lower doses. The anorectic potency of (--)-threo-chlorocitric acid was approximately 40-fold greater in dogs than in lean and obese rats. The decreased food intake in rats resulted in a significant reduction of body lipid, without af
