BACKGROUND: We reviewed the experience of An Zhen and Fu Wai Hospital for congenital sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (SVA) to determine risk factors for aortic valve replacement (AVR) and postoperative progression of aortic regurgitation (AR).
METHODS: Over a 7-year period, 255 patients underwent surgical repair of an SVA. Aneurysms originated from the right sinus and the noncoronary sinus in 212 patients (83.1%) and 38 patients (14.9%), respectively, and protruded into the right ventricle and right atrium in 171 patients (67.1%) and 80 patients (31.4%), respectively. Asians as well as Europeans have light skin, for which no genes to date are known to be responsible. A mutation, Ala481Thr (c.G1559A), in the oculocutaneous albinism type II (OCA2) gene has approximately 70% function of the wild type allele in melanogenesis. Very little is known about the genes and mechanisms affecting skin lightening in Asian populations. In this study, two coding SNPs, c.G1129A (R163Q) at the MC1R (melanocortin 1 receptor) gene and c.A1962G (H615R) at the OCA2 (oculocutaneous albinism type II) gene, were investigated in a total of 1,809 individuals in 16 populations from various areas.
