Nakata, H. M. (Washington State University, Pullman). Effect of pH on intermediates produced during growth and sporulation of Bacillus cereus. J. Bacteriol. 86:577-581. 1963.-Cultures of Bacillus cereus strain T, grown in an unbuffered glucose-yeast extract-mineral salts medium and in the same medium buffered at pH 6.4, 7.0, or 7.4, were examined to determine the effect of pH on the production and utilization of metabolic intermediates during growth and sporulation. Although the growth rate of the unbuffered cultures decreased as a result of changes in pH, the growth rates of the buffered cult…

1. Under conditions in which mouse typhoid is allowed to spread naturally among herds of mice comprised of different proportions of individuals of innately high or low susceptibility: (a) 85 to 95 per cent of the innately susceptible succumb to mouse typhoid in contrast to less than 5 per cent of the innately resistant, regardless of whether either constitutes 25, 50, or 75 per cent of the population respectively. (b) The surviving population is therefore comprised largely of individuals known at the outset to be innately resistant. These resistants are, nevertheless, apt to have become infect

The results of these experiments support the previous observations that mice react in different ways to the inhalation of different bacteria. If normal mice are sprayed with hemolytic streptococci or Friedländer's bacillus, these organisms may be recovered from the lungs and heart's blood for a number of days after exposure. A large number of mice so exposed die of a septicemia during the 30 days following spraying. Consolidation of one or more lobes is not rare. If normal mice are exposed to an atmosphere of pneumococci, however, the organisms rapidly disappear from the lungs and only an occa…
