Alcohol's harms to others in Wales, United Kingdom: Nature, magnitude and associations with mental well-being.

AIM: To explore the nature and magnitude of alcohol's harms to others (AHTOs), and associations with mental well-being. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey implemented amongst 891 randomly selected Welsh residents (aged 18+ years), via computer assisted telephone interviews. Questions established past 12-month experience of nine direct harms resulting from another person's alcohol consumption (e.g. violence) and five linked outcomes (e.g. concern for a child). The source (e.g. partner/stranger) and frequency of the AHTO were collected, and respondents' socio-demographics, drinking behaviours and

Who is most affected by prenatal alcohol exposure: Boys or girls?

OBJECTIVE: To examine outcomes among boys and girls that are associated with prenatal alcohol exposure. METHODS: Boys and girls with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and randomly-selected controls were compared on a variety of physical and neurobehavioral traits. RESULTS: Sex ratios indicated that heavy maternal binge drinking may have significantly diminished viability to birth and survival of boys postpartum more than girls by age seven. Case control comparisons of a variety of physical and neurobehavioral traits at age seven indicate that both sexes were affected similarly for a ma…

Role of microglia in ethanol-induced neurodegenerative disease: Pathological and behavioral dysfunction at different developmental stages.

Alcohol abuse can result in significant alterations to the structure of the brain and ultimately to behavioral dysfunctions. Epidemiological studies have shown that alcoholism is closely associated with impaired memory and judgment. However, the degree of deficit (brain injury) depends on factors such as the age of onset, duration of heavy drinking, continuous versus periodic (binge) drinking and the typical amount consumed per session. In recent years, neuroinflammation has been proposed as one of the alcoholism-induced neuropathological mechanisms, since increased levels of microglial marker

Alcohol and Prostate Cancer: Time to Draw Conclusions.

It has been a long-standing debate in the research and medical societies whether alcohol consumption is linked to the risk of prostate cance … ecent drinking status. Nevertheless, the overall conclusion is that high alcohol intake, especially binge drinking, is associated with increased risk for PCa, and this effect is not limited to any type of beverage. Alcohol consumption is also directly linked to PCa lethality as it may accelerate the growth of prostate tumors and significantly shorten the time fo …

Sigma receptor agonists are suspected to modulate blood pressure in humans. We investigated how modulation of sigma receptors impacts phenyl … moderate drinking (P < 0.05) but not with arteries obtained from donors with histories of heavy or binge drinking. The sigma receptor-1 antagonist BD-1047 elicited an upward shift in the PE concentration-response curve in arteries from non-/light and moderate drinkers but not from heavy drinkers. Interestingly, the sigma receptor-2 antagonist caused an upward s …

Evidence for an alcohol-related "harm paradox" in individuals with internalizing disorders: Test and replication in two independent community samples.

BACKGROUND: Internalizing (anxiety and mood) disorders (INTD) commonly co-occur (are "comorbid") with alcohol use disorder (AUD). The literature suggests that excessive alcohol use aimed at coping with INTD symptoms is, at best, a partial explanation for the high comorbidity rates observed. We hypothesized that individuals with INTD experience greater susceptibility to developing AUD symptoms due to the partially shared neurobiological dysfunctions underlying both conditions. We probe this hypothesis by testing the prediction that, after accounting for the volume of alcohol intake, individuals

Ethanol combined with energy drinks: Two decades of research in rodents.

Many studies raised concerns on alcoholic beverages consumption mixed with energy drinks (AmED), which can induce higher rates of binge drinking and earlier development of alcohol use disorders. After 20 years of research, few studies with laboratory animals have focused on the effects of this mixture and the neurobiological and pharmacological mechanisms underlying them. We found 16 articles on AmED administration to rodents evaluating its effects on voluntary consumption, locomotion, anxiety-like behavior, memory, influence on the onset time of seizures, biochemical and neurochemical measure…

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Behaviors Associated With HIV Acquisition Among Adult Sexual Minority Men in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been associated with HIV acquisition among sexual minority men; however, research examining the mechanisms through which ACEs affect behaviors associated with HIV acquisition among this population, as well as variation by race and ethnicity, is limited. METHODS: This study sought to investigate the relationship between ACEs and behaviors associated with HIV acquisition, including potential differences in ACE score by race and ethnicity, and to assess the potential mediating effects of depression, substance use, and binge drinking, using bi…

Case Report: Favorable outcome in a patient with simultaneous dengue meningoencephalitis and Wernicke's thiamine deficiency.

This case report describes the case of a 35-year-old man with a history of chronic binge drinking who presented with fever, associated confused state of mind, and symptoms indicative of acute alcohol withdrawal, including tremors and agitation. Routine investigations revealed pancytopenia and a positive dengue NS1 antigen test, confirming a diagnosis of dengue fever. Neurological examination revealed abnormalities, such as nystagmus, ophthalmoplegia, and altered mental status, which raised the initial suspicion of an alternative diagnosis of Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE). Magnetic resonance i…

Alcohol Consumption and Cervical Carcinogenesis: Time to Draw Conclusions.

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide and remains a significant cause of cancer-related mortality. Alcohol consumption is linked to an increased risk of several cancers and is a controversial risk factor for developing cervical cancer. This review updates existing information on the correlation between alcohol consumption and the risk of developing cervical cancer. Several comprehensive studies from different geographical regions have shown that moderate and heavy drinking is positively correlated with the development of cervical cancer. There is a synergistic
