Atrial septal aneurysm in pregnancy: echocardiography and obstetric outcomes.

Background Atrial septal aneurysm (ASA) is an uncommon cardiac anomaly that increases maternal morbidity during pregnancy. ASA is related to atrial arrhythmia thromboembolism and it may accompany congenital anomalies such as an atrial septal defect (ASD) or patent foramen ovale (PFO). There are no studies examining pregnancy outcomes in pregnant women with ASA. We aimed to investigate the cardiologic parameters and obstetric outcomes of pregnant women diagnosed with ASA. Methods This prospective cohort study analyzed 45 pregnant women diagnosed with ASA, who continued their follow-ups in an ob

Effects of employment and education on preterm and full-term infant mortality in Korea.

OBJECTIVES: The infant mortality rate is a sensitive and commonly used indicator of the socio-economic status of a population. Generally, studies investigating the relationship between infant mortality and socio-economic status have focused on full-term infants in Western populations. This study examined the effects of education level and employment status on full-term and preterm infant mortality in Korea. Data were collected from the National Birth Registration Database and merged with data from the National Death Certification Database. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: In

Hypospadias in British Columbia.

The British Columbia Health Surveillance Registry (BCHSR) records the frequency, incidence, and distribution of congenital malformations and other disabilities among individuals within the province using multiple sources of ascertainment. The most important sources of ascertainment for this study were Physician's Notice of Birth forms and discharge diagnosis from all hospitals in the province on children 7 years old or younger. These data were used to determine the minimal incidence of hypospadias with and without other congenital anomalies in order to provide information useful in management

Does maternal heart rate variability mediate the association between postpartum depressive symptoms and preterm neonate heart rate variability (ProMote study)?

We investigated whether maternal heart rate variability (HRV) mediates the association between maternal postpartum depressive symptoms and preterm infant autonomic regulation in the early postnatal period. Data derived from 82 mothers and 97 preterm infants (gestation<37 weeks) (Mean [SD] gestational age (GA): 33.4 [2.15] weeks). We assessed preterm neonate HRV within 24 h after birth (T1), on days 3-4 (T2), and for neonates born before 35 weeks GA, at 35-36 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA) (T3). Maternal HRV measurements were carried out between the 3rd and 6th day after birth. HRV features incl

Accelerating birth timing to access cash transfers? Evidence from households in extreme poverty.

There has been a sustained rise in cash transfer programs to the poor, and burgeoning interest in interventions promoting early childhood development. We draw together these trends to study whether open enrolment interventions targeting cash transfers to pregnant mothers unintentionally induce those not pregnant to accelerate birth timing in order to start receiving the cash. Our study context is rural Northern Nigeria, where households have high demand for liquidity because they are reliant on volatile earnings from agriculture, are subject to frequent natural and man-made aggregate shocks, a

Interpregnancy interval planning after caesarean section: A feminist thematic analysis of women's understanding and decision making when planning another pregnancy.

PROBLEM: There is limited research on women's perception of risk regarding pregnancy after caesarean. BACKGROUND: Interpregnancy interval alters risk in the next pregnancy and birth following a caesarean. Interpregnancy interval is a potentially modifiable risk that health care providers need to consider when counselling women about future pregnancy plans. QUESTION: What is women's experience of decision making regarding interpregnancy interval after caesarean birth? METHODS: Twelve women participated in in-depth interviews; these were analysed thematically assisted by the use of NViVO soft

Renal function and blood pressure in 11 year old children born extremely preterm or small for gestational age.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth and low birth weight are associated with reduced nephron numbers and increased risk of hypertension and kidney disease in later life. AIMS: We tested the hypothesis that extremely preterm birth and intrauterine growth restriction is associated with decreased renal function in mid childhood. METHODS: At 11 years of age the following measures were obtained in a regional cohort of children born extremely premature (EP, i.e. < 28 weeks gestational age-GA) or with extremely low birth weight (ELBW, i.e. BW < 1000 grams) and in matched controls born at term with appropriat

UCP1 is present in porcine adipose tissue and is responsive to postnatal leptin.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) may be accompanied by inadequate thermoregulation, especially in piglets that are not considered to possess any brown adipose tissue (BAT) and are thus entirely dependent on shivering thermogenesis in order to maintain body temperature after birth. Leptin can stimulate heat production by promoting non-shivering thermogenesis in BAT, but whether this response occurs in piglets is unknown. Newborn female piglets that were characterised as showing IUGR (mean birth weight of approximately 0.98 kg) were therefore administered injections of either saline or lep

Pre-, peri- and neonatal risk factors for autism.

OBJECTIVE: To identify pre-, peri- and neonatal risk factors for pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). METHODS: We searched the Medline database through March 2011 for relevant case-control and population-based studies on pre-, peri- and neonatal hazards related to PDD, including autism. We identified 85 studies for this review. Data were extracted systematically and organized according to risk factors related to family history, pregnancy, gestational age, delivery, birth milestones and the neonate's condition at birth. RESULTS: During the prenatal period, risk factors for PDD were advanc

Glucose-insulin infusion for the early treatment of non-oliguric hyperkalemia in extremely-low-birth-weight infants.

In order to investigate the status of non-oliguric hyperkalemia and to evaluate glucose-insulin infusion treatment among extremely-low-birth-weight (ELBW) infants, 161 infants weighting less than 1000 gm at birth were enrolled for this study. They were divided into two groups: a hyperkalemic group and a non-hyperkalemic group. Hyperkalemia was defined here as a serum potassium level of greater than 6 mEq/L in a non-hemolyzed arterial blood sample. A glucose-insulin infusion was administered to the patients when hyperkalemia was detected in them during the first few days after birth. The infusi

Effects of Georgia's Medicaid Family Planning Waiver on Pregnancy Characteristics and Birth Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Medicaid family planning waivers can increase access to health care services and have been associated with lower rates of unintended pregnancy, which is associated with a higher risk of negative birth outcomes such as preterm birth and low birthweight. The objective of this study was to test the effect of Georgia's Medicaid family planning waiver, Planning for Healthy Babies (P4HB), on pregnancy characteristics and birth outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) survey data in pre- (2008-2009) and two post-periods (2012-2013

Stratified analysis of the correlation between gestational weight gain and birth weight for gestational age: a retrospective single-center cohort study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Japan has an exceptionally high proportion of low-weight births and underweight women. It has been suggested that an appropriate increase in gestational weight gain (GWG) for underweight women will help to prevent low birth weight. The current strategy aims to raise the desired value of GWG equally for all pregnant women within the underweight category. However, it remains elusive whether or not the relationship between GWG and birth weight for gestational age (BW/GA) are uniformly equivalent for all the women. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort analysis of women who del

A neural progenitor mitotic wave is required for asynchronous axon outgrowth and morphology.

Spatiotemporal mechanisms generating neural diversity are fundamental for understanding neural processes. Here, we investigated how neural d … fly behaviour was impaired. We show that the temporal order of progenitor divisions influences the birth order of sensory neurons, axon branching and impact on grooming behaviour. These data support the idea that developmental timing controls axon wiring neural diversity.
