Symptom Profiles and Intensive Treatment Outcomes in Sexual Minority and Heterosexual Patients With OCD.

Sexual minority (SM) individuals appear to be at greater risk for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Despite this, little is known about OCD presentation and treatment outcomes among SM individuals. Although some research has suggested that SM individuals may be more likely to endorse intrusive thoughts related to violence/sex/religion compared to heterosexual individuals, extant literature has neglected to examine potential differences across different SM groups, a notable limitation given the apparent differences in the types of minority stress that each group experiences and the unique he

Tobacco and Cannabis Co-Use by Sexual Minority Adults in the United States, 2022.

INTRODUCTION: Given the negative health outcomes of tobacco and cannabis co-use, understanding the co-use of tobacco and cannabis is important, particularly regarding those with higher health burdens, such as sexual minority individuals. This study examined the co-use of tobacco and cannabis by sexual identity. METHODS: The adult sample from the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health was used for this study. A multinomial logistic regression was performed on past-month tobacco and cannabis use (i.e., no use of tobacco and cannabis [reference], tobacco only use, cannabis only use, tobacco

A national longitudinal study of sexual orientation discordance, sexual identity fluidity, and alcohol and other drug use disorder symptoms.

Background: Many national studies fail to account for discordance between sexual orientation dimensions (e.g. a mismatch between sexual identity and sexual attraction) or sexual identity fluidity (e.g. changes in sexual identity over time). Objective: To examine the longitudinal relationships among sexual identity fluidity/stability, sexual orientation discordance/concordance, and alcohol and other drug use disorder symptoms. Methods: The study used nationally representative longitudinal data from Waves 1-5 (2013-2019) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study of US adolesc

Polysubstance use by sexual identity among US adults, 2021.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding polysubstance use among US sexual minority adults is important to serve as a population-level baseline to promote health equity around substance use prevention and public health strategies. This study quantifies the number of substances used by sexual identity among US adults. METHODS: We used the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health and included adults (aged ≥18) (unweighted n = 47,291). We conducted multivariable Poisson regression models to examine the number of substances used in the past year (count variable; range: 0-18) by sexual identity ("heterosexual"

A Prospective Study of Predictors and Consequences of Hooking Up for Sexual Minority Women.

Hooking up, which refers to a sexual encounter (ranging from kissing to penetrative sex) between individuals who are not in a committed relationship, is an increasingly normative form of sexual exploration among emerging adults. Past research has focused on hookups within a heteronormative context, and some of this work has examined hookups as a way to cope with distress. Building on this work, we examined the role of hookups as a means for lesbian and bisexual women to cope with minority stress through increasing connection and engagement with the LGBTQ (lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/queer

Prescription Opioid Misuse: Examining the Role of Opioid-Related Attitudes among Youth and Young Adults by Sexual Orientation.

Background: High prevalence of opioid misuse has been noted among youth and young adults-particularly among those who identify as lesbian/gay or bisexual (LGB). Yet, little is known about the relationship between opioid-related attitudes and misuse among those who identify as LGB. Objectives: This study examined the role of opioid-related attitudes (i.e. acceptance of misuse and risk perception) in relation to ever and past 6-month prescription opioid misuse, stratified by sexual orientation. Methods: This study used a nationally representative, probability-based sample of youth and young adul

Trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder, and depression among sexual minority and heterosexual women veterans.

This study examined the impact of various traumas across the life span on screening positive for current posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression among heterosexual and sexual minority women veterans. Women veterans were recruited over the Internet (N = 706, 37% lesbian or bisexual) to participate in an anonymous, online survey. We assessed childhood trauma; adult sexual assault and adult physical victimization before, during, and after the military; combat exposure; perceived sexist discrimination during military service; sexual minority military stressors; past-year sexist events;

Mycoplasma genitalium: prevalence in men presenting with urethritis to a South Australian public sexual health clinic.

BACKGROUND/AIM: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Mycoplasma genitalium infection among male patients with dysuria and/or urethral discharge. An analysis of the clinical, demographic and microbiological factors associated with M. genitalium infection was also conducted. METHOD: From May 2007 to June 2011, men presenting to the clinic with self-reported symptoms of dysuria and/or urethral discharge were identified and underwent urethral swab, which was microscopically assessed for objective non-gonococcal urethritis. A first-void urine sample was tested for Chlamydia trachomatis

Men who have sex with men and women in Bangalore, South India, and potential impact on the HIV epidemic.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to quantify differences in patterns of sexual behaviour among men who have sex with men and women (MSMW) compared with men who have sex with men only (MSMO), and to examine the extent to which bisexual behaviour may act as a bridge for introducing HIV infection into the general population. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey in Bangalore city in 2006, which sampled men seeking sex with men in public places and hammams (bath houses where transgender individuals sell sex to men). RESULTS: Among a sample of 357 men reporting same-sex behaviour; 41% also report

The epidemiology of HIV and AIDS in the United States.

The HIV/AIDS epidemic has slowed in growth and is approaching a leveling in incidence. However, the number of HIV-infected persons is high, and new infections continue to occur. The prevention of AIDS-related OIs and decreases in AIDS-related mortality are an encouraging sign that HIV-infected persons are living better and longer lives. However, if the improvements in clinical management and patient survival are not matched by reductions in HIV incidence, the population of HIV-infected persons will increase. The characteristics of persons with HIV infection are changing over time and must be m

The treatment-free incubation period of AIDS in a cohort of homosexual men.

OBJECTIVE: The treatment-free incubation period distribution was estimated from data obtained from a cohort of homo/bisexual men in Amsterdam. DESIGN: Participants in a cohort study that started in Amsterdam at the end of 1984 were seen at 3- or 6-monthly intervals. The analysis excluded time since the start of zidovudine treatment (given to 27 individuals) and no cohort member received primary Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia prophylaxis (i.e., before AIDS diagnosis) before February 1990. METHODS: Both HIV-positive (n = 269) and HIV-seroconverted (n = 79) homosexual men were included in this

Loneliness and Social and Emotional Support Among Sexual and Gender Minority Caregivers.

IMPORTANCE: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) adults in the US are more likely than their non-SGM counterparts to provide informal care to their family members and/or friends. Caregiving can impose substantial physical, mental, and social connection issues on caregivers. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations among loneliness, lack of social and emotional support, sexual orientation, gender identity, and informal caregiving status. Sexual desire for non-normative sexual behaviors: differences between centennials and millennials considering sexual orientation.

INTRODUCTION: Non-normative sexual behaviors were traditionally studied from a psychopathological perspective, although nowadays a distinction is made between paraphilia (nonpathological) and paraphilic disorder (mental disorder). METHODS: The present study aims to examine the differences between a group of millennials (n = 173) and centennials (n = 159) in their appetite for these sexual behaviors without the preconception of these behaviors as harmful or pathological. RESULTS: Differences in appetite related to exhibitionism and foot fetishism were found in the first instance, with millenn

Sex with women among men who have sex with men in China: prevalence and sexual practices.

Men who have sex with men and women (MSMW) are a potential bridge population for transmitting HIV to heterosexual women. This study assessed key characteristics of this subgroup of men who have sex with men (MSM) in China. Of 1141 eligible MSM, 45.6% reported bisexual behaviors. Besides marriage as a strong predictor (odds ratio: 23.90, 95% confidence interval: 14.29-39.98), older age (1.12, 1.10-1.15) and lower education (or no college education) (1.98, 1.52-2.59) were also independently associated with having ever had sex with women. MSMW reported higher proportions of alcohol drinking, hete

Mushroom bodies are not required for courtship behavior by normal and sexually mosaic Drosophila.

To elucidate the effect of feminization of male Drosophila brain cells on courtship control, we performed a large scale screening of expression drivers that can suppress male-specific behavior with transformer gene expression. Two drivers caused essentially total courtship suppression. The expression pattern of these drivers did not show any correlation with the mushroom bodies or the antennal lobes, the regions that have been suggested to play important roles in courtship. Ablation of mushroom bodies using hydroxyurea treatment did not affect this courtship suppression. The ablation did not c

Condom use in multi-ethnic neighborhoods of San Francisco: the population-based AMEN (AIDS in Multi-Ethnic Neighborhoods) Study.

We examined the prevalence and correlates of condom use in a community-based sample of unmarried heterosexual and gay/bisexual Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics (aged 20 to 44 years) in San Francisco (n = 1229). Only 9% of heterosexual males reported always using condoms, and fewer of those with multiple sexual partners (6%) reported always using condoms compared with those in monogamous relationships (12%). Much higher proportions of gay/bisexual men reported always using condoms (48%). Racial differences in condom use were observed only among women. Sexual communication and the sexual enjoyment

Associations Between Sexual Orientation and Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction in Sexual Minority Populations.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals (eg, those identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or other [LGBTQ+]) are disproportionately affected by psychological distress and trauma, all recognized risk factors for disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs). This suggests a potentially higher burden of DGBIs in SGM populations. However, the relationship between SGM status and DGBIs has not been well-characterized in large-scale clinical datasets. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional analysis using All of Us database to identify the rela
