We report the case of 2 infants born with a lumbar dermal sinus tract and an overlying angiomatous skin lesion referred to our pediatric neurosurgery service for evaluation of a tethered cord. Both infants were born with a lumbar dimple and were found to have a large cutaneous hemangioma without neurologic symptoms. An MRI of the lumbar spine revealed an isointense mass in the dorsal epidural at L(4) with an adjacent mass effect and extension into the overlying soft tissues. The determination of silica concentrations in geothermal brines is widely recognized as a difficult analytical task due to its complex chemical polymerization kinetics that occurs during sample collection and chemical analysis. Capillary electrophoresis (CE) has been evaluated as a new reliable analytical method to measure silica (as silicates) in geothermal brines. Synthetic and geothermal brine samples were used to evaluate CE methodology. A capillary electrophoresis instrument, Quanta 4000 (Waters-Millipore) coupled with a Waters 820 workstation was used to carry out the experimental work.

We report the filling kinetics of different liquids in nanofabricated capillaries with rectangular cross-section by capillary force. Congenital alveolar capillary dysplasia is a rare and fatal cause of pulmonary hypertension in neonates. We report on a term baby with severe pulmonary hypertension unresponsive to high-frequency ventilation and nitric oxide. A diagnosis of alveolar capillary dysplasia was established on autopsy. We review the literature regarding pathophysiology, clinical presentations, associated malformations, and treatment trials.

A micro-capillary rheometer was developed to determine the rheology and injectability of parenteral formulations. The rheometer consisted of a micro-capillary and a glass syringe attached to an Instron that drove the syringe plunger at predetermined speeds and measured resulting forces on the plunger. The cross-head speed and the measured force were used to calculate the shear rate and the shear stress respectively, according to the Hagen-Poiseuille equation.
