We have employed multiple indicator dilution techniques (MID) in six patients after heart-lung transplantation to assess changes in the lung vascular permeability-surface area product for urea (PS). The 7S nerve-growth factor (7S NGF) purified from mouse submandibular glands induced histamine release from rat-isolated mast cells in the presence of lysophosphatidyl-serine. When 7S NGF was injected intradermally into the rat skin, the vascular permeability increased. This response was abolished by the antihistamine, diphenhydramine. These results show that 7S NGF acts as a potent histamine releaser.

In order to investigate the initial lesions of pulmonary bone marrow embolism and its pathogenesis, the author studied the pulmonary changes of 70 rabbits during a 24-hour period after the infusion of 500 mg of fresh allogeneic bone marrow into the marginal ear veins. Oral Cyclosporin A (CyA) was given for the prophylaxis of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) to sixty-seven patients receiving a bone marrow transplant, and was found to be extremely effective in reducing the severity of acute GVHD. Leukotrienes B4, C4, and D4, members of a recently discovered family of substances biosynthesized from arachidonic acid, were found to have potent microvascular actions in the hamster cheek pouch. A study was made of the vascular permeability changes occurring in the dental pulp of rat teeth subjected to trauma of the occlusal surface with a special steel burr. The vascular response was measured by leakage of 131I-labelled human serum albumin and of colloidal carbon. The effect of a variety of inhibitors of increased vascular permeability was observed. The results obtained support the hypothesis that in the model studied the vascular response of the dental pulp is mediated by the sequential release of histamine and 5-HT, kinins and prostaglandins.

A subplantar injection of 5--100 micrograms adriamycin in the mouse hind paw produced a biphasic inflammatory response. The first phase peaked at 2 h while the second, more severe phase peaked at four to five days. The magnitude of inflammation was dose related. Radial or superficial peroneal nerve biopsies of 6 patients with tuberculoid or borderline-tuberculoid leprosy and 6 control nerve biopsies were examined by electron microscopy.
