Rats of different ages (3 to 15-wk-old) were fed on a 25% casein diet for one week, and the nitrogen balance and liver serine dehydratase (SDH, EC 4.2.1.13) activity were then determined. The effects of dietary field horsetail (Equisetum arvense L.) powder on lipid components were studied in rats fed a 20% casein diet with or without cholesterol (0.5% cholesterol and 0.15% sodium cholate) for 14 days. A metalloproteinase with a specificity for gelatin was isolated from serum-free medium of cultures of rheumatoid synovial fluid. The enzyme showed all the properties of a leukocyte gelatinase. Twelve of 21 isolates of Cladosporium carrionii, when grown on nutritionally deficient media such as lactrimel agar, hay infusion agar, diluted corn meal dextrose agar, and water agar, produced urniform phialides and phialoconidia identical with those produced by two isolates of Cladophialophora ajelloi.
