Causal relationship between inflammatory factors and inflammatory bowel disease: A bidirectional Mendelian randomization study combined with meta-analysis.

Due to the limitations of traditional observational studies, investigating the association between inflammatory factors and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains challenging. In this study, we employed Mendelian randomization (MR) combined with meta-analysis to assess the causal relationship between 91 inflammatory factors and IBD. We selected genome-wide association study (GWAS) data for inflammatory factors and IBD from GWAS databases and conducted 2-sample MR analyses using the inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method, MR-Egger regression, and weighted median estimator. The MR analyses wer

Evaluation of genomic selection models using whole genome sequence data and functional annotation in Belgian Blue cattle.

BACKGROUND: The availability of large cohorts of whole-genome sequenced individuals, combined with functional annotation, is expected to provide opportunities to improve the accuracy of genomic selection (GS). However, such benefits have not often been observed in initial applications. The reference population for GS in Belgian Blue Cattle (BBC) continues to grow. Combined with the availability of reference panels of sequenced individuals, it provides an opportunity to evaluate GS models using whole genome sequence (WGS) data and functional annotation. RESULTS: Here, we used data from 16,508

The stoneflies (Plecoptera) of Arkansas: a checklist compiled from museum specimen data.

BACKGROUND: Stoneflies are well known as indicators of water quality. Their presence in running waters, glacial meltwaters, and large oligotrophic lakes is rapidly declining the world over. In the USA, states partner with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect habitat and wildlife through the development of State Wildlife Action Plans (SWAPs). Plants and wildlife species often enter these SWAPs as Species in Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN). Arkansas currently lists nine stonefly species as SGCNs and has funded research on them through SWAP grants. However, these nine species were init

Computational analysis of congenital heart disease associated SNPs: unveiling their impact on the gene regulatory system.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a prevalent condition characterized by defective heart development, causing premature death and stillbirths among infants. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have provided insights into the role of genetic variants in CHD pathogenesis through the identification of a comprehensive set of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Notably, 90-95% of these variants reside in the noncoding genome, complicating the understanding of their underlying mechanisms. Here, we developed a systematic computational pipeline for the identification and analysis of CHD-associ

Causal relationship between trunk and lower limb fat mass and intervertebral disc disorders: A 2-sample Mendelian randomization study.

Intervertebral disc disorders (IVDDs) are a major cause of disability worldwide, influenced by genetic and lifestyle factors such as obesity. Although the role of body fat distribution in IVDDs is recognized, the causal relationship remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the genetic basis of this relationship by examining the association between fat mass distribution in the trunk and lower limbs and the risk of IVDDs using Mendelian randomization (MR). The study utilized single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) as instrumental variable to investigate genetic predispositions to increased fa

Role of immune cells in seborrheic dermatitis: a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

Prior research has indicated a link between seborrheic dermatitis (SD) and dysregulated immune responses; however, the causal linkage between this association and certain immune cell features has yet to be thoroughly clarified. This study seeks to examine the potential causal influence of immune cell characteristics on the pathogenesis of seborrheic dermatitis (SD) and to evaluate if these characteristics can function as biomarkers for early diagnosis and therapy. Data mining was performed using the Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) Catalog database to select 731 immune cell features for ex

Integrative analysis reveals novel insights into juvenile idiopathic arthritis pathogenesis and shared molecular pathways with associated traits.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is an autoimmune joint disease that frequently co-occurs with other complex phenotypes, including cancers and other autoimmune diseases. Despite the identification of numerous risk variants through genome-wide association studies (GWAS), the affected genes, their connection to JIA pathogenesis, and their role in the development of associated traits remain unclear. This study aims to address these gaps by elucidating the gene-regulatory mechanisms underlying JIA pathogenesis and exploring its potential role in the emergence of associated traits.

Layer-Specific Developmentally Precise Axon Targeting of Transient Suppressed-by-Contrast Retinal Ganglion Cells.

The mouse retina encodes diverse visual features in the spike trains of >40 retinal ganglion cell (RGC) types. Each RGC type innervates a specific subset of the >50 retinorecipient brain areas. Our catalog of RGC types and feature representations is nearing completion. Yet, we know little about where specific RGC types send their information. Furthermore, the developmental strategies by which RGC axons choose their targets and pattern their terminal arbors remain obscure. Here, we identify a genetic intersection (Cck-Cre and Brn3cCKOAP ) that selectively labels transient Suppressed-by-Contrast
