[Angiographic examination of the vertebral artery at the atlantoxial joint during head rotation].

Stenosis or occlusion of the vertebral artery at the atlantoaxial joint associated with head rotation is generally considered an uncommon cause of vertebrobasilar insufficiency. This rotational contralateral (to the face) vertebral artery occlusion is considered to be a "physiological phenomenon". The purpose of the present article is to investigate whether stenosis or occlusion of the vertebral artery at the atlantoaxial joint really occurs with head rotation. The authors performed vertebral angiography both in the neutral position and with contralateral rotation of the head (about 80 - 90 de

[The diagnosis of syringomyelia (author's transl].

Seven cases are reported in which syringomyelia was confirmed by neuroradiological studies and surgical procedures. Dissociated sensory loss was noted in four patients in this series. Peripheral paresis and muscular atrophy in arms and hands were found in all seven patients. In only two of the patients the wide spinal canal were found in the lateral view of plain cervical spine films. Assimilation of the atlas to the occipital bone was seen in two patients. Arnold-Chiari malformation was found by myelography and posterior fossa craniectomy in four patients. Metrizamide CT cisternography was fo

Micro-CT Anatomy of the Vertebral Column of the Luristan Newt (Neurergus kaiseri).

The Neurergus kaiseri is one of the native and endangered species of the Salamandridae family, which is restricted to the mountainous habitats of southern Lorestan and northern Khuzestan. The presence of this species in the environment and the risks surrounding the extinction and health of this species make it necessary to produce basic anatomical information. The present study investigated the typical morphological characteristics of normal, mature, and healthy Luristan newt (Neurergus kaiseri) vertebral column using a micro-CT scan. The samples were entered into the micro-CT scan machine one

Differentiating rectal carcinoma by an immunohistological analysis of carcinomas of pelvic organs based on the NCBI Literature Survey and the Human Protein Atlas database.

The treatments and prognoses of pelvic organ carcinomas differ, depending on whether the primary tumor originated in the rectum, urinary bladder, prostate, ovary, or uterus; therefore, it is essential to diagnose pathologically the primary origin and stages of these tumors. To establish the panels of immunohistochemical markers for differential diagnosis, we reviewed 91 of the NCBI articles on these topics and found that the results correlated closely with those of the public protein database, the Human Protein Atlas. The results revealed the panels of immunohistochemical markers for the diffe

The selective odontoidectomy: endoscopic endonasal approach to the craniocervical junction.

OBJECTIVE: The resection of the odontoid process via an extended endoscopic endonasal approach has been recently proposed as an alternative to the microscopic transoral method. We aimed to delineate a minimally invasive endoscopic transnasal odontoidectomy and to describe the endoscopic anatomy of the anterior craniovertebral junction (CVJ). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The anterior CVJ of 14 fresh adult cadavers were selectively accessed via a binostril endoscopic endonasal approach using 0- and 30-degree endoscopes. RESULTS: The nasopharynx was widely exposed without removing any of the turbinat

C1 laminectomy for retro-odontoid pseudotumor without atlantoaxial subluxation: review of seven consecutive cases.

PURPOSE: A retro-odontoid pseudotumor is usually a reactive fibrocartilaginous mass associated with atlantoaxial subluxation (AAS). However, a retro-odontoid pseudotumor not associated with AAS, which undergoes spontaneous regression following C1 laminoplasty, has been reported. The purpose of this study was to report surgical outcomes of C1 laminectomy for retro-odontoid pseudotumor without AAS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cases of seven patients (mean age 75.6 ± 7.6 years-old) with retro-odontoid pseudotumor without AAS were reviewed. The mean follow up time was 52.3 ± 25.5 months. Each pati

Procedural safety and potential vascular complication of endovascular recanalization for chronic cervical internal carotid artery occlusion.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic cervical internal carotid artery occlusion (ICAO) and cerebral ischemia may benefit from revascularization. The feasibility of endovascular recanalization for chronic ICAO has been reported recently, but its safety is still unproven. We report the follow-up results of 54 chronic ICAO patients who underwent endovascular recanalization, focusing on potential vascular complications and corresponding management. METHODS AND RESULTS: Endovascular recanalization for chronic ICAO was attempted in 54 consecutive patients (48 men; 69.2 + or - 9.8 years old) with eithe

[Clinical significance of σ1 receptor over-expression in cervical cancer and the effect of its synthetic ligands on the growth of cervical cancer cells].

Objective: To explore the role of σ1 receptor (σ1R) in the clinical prognosis of cervical cancer, and provide a theoretical basis for σ1R targeted molecular therapy through observing the inhibition of synthetic σ1R-specific ligand compounds on the growth of cervical cancer cells. Methods: (1) Immunohistochemical or immunocytochemistry staining were respectively used to detect the expression and localization of σ1R protein. (2) The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) data set was used to validate our results. (3) Two series of 4 novel σ1R ligand compounds were synthesized by altering the N-terminal subst

Mass-Spectrometry-Identified Quality Markers of Jingtong Granules Are Predicted to Engage Upregulated Neutrophil Granule Enzymes in Cervical Spondylotic Radiculopathy: An Integrative Machine-Learning and Molecular-Dynamics Study.

RATIONALE: Jingtong Granules is a clinically approved seven-herb formula for CSR, a condition in which radicular pain is sustained partly by inflammatory and immune processes, yet the immune-cellular state of CSR and the immune-level mechanism of the formula remain poorly defined. METHODS: Using peripheral-blood transcriptomes from GSE223227 (7 controls, 9 CSR, and 30 degenerative cervical myelopathy), we profiled nine immune lineages by signature scoring, prioritized CSR-associated features with six machine-learning methods under permutation-based specificity testing, localized signature gen

Radiographic analysis of the cervical spine in patients with retro-odontoid pseudotumors.

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of 10 consecutive patients with a noninflammatory retro-odontoid pseudotumor. OBJECTIVE: To examine the radiographic characteristics in patients with a retro-odontoid pseudotumor and to evaluate the efficacy of posterior fusion. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: A retro-odontoid pseudotumor, a reactive fibrocartilaginous mass, is known to develop after chronic atlantoaxial instability; however, one-third of the reported cases showed no overt atlantoaxial instability. The pathomechanism for such "atypical" cases remains unclear, although altered cervical motion

Cervical fixation in the pediatric patient: our experience.

The surgical management of cervical instability in children is a challenging issue. Although the indications for internal fixation are similar to those for adults, accurate pre-surgery study and sharp surgical techniques are necessary because of the size of such patients' anatomy, their peculiar tissue biology and the wide spectrum of diseases requiring cervical fusion. Our case study is made up of 31 patients, 15 male and 16 female, with an average age of 7 years and 6 months (2 years and 6 months to 18 years) who underwent cervical fusion for instability. Their physical condition presented v

DHX34 as a promising biomarker for prognosis, immunotherapy and chemotherapy in Pan-Cancer: A Comprehensive Analysis and Experimental Validation.

Background: As a member of the DExD/H-box RNA helicase family, DHX34 has demonstrated a significant correlation with the development of multiple disorders. Nevertheless, a comprehensive investigation between DHX34 and pan-cancer remains unexplored. Methods: We analyzed the value of DHX34 in pan-cancer based on some databases, such as The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), and The Human Protein Atlas (HPA) by use the R language as well as some online analysis tools, including STRING, TISIDB, TISCH2. And based on our samples we performed Western blot (WB), qPCR and immuno

C2/C3 pathologic fractures from polyostotic fibrous dysplasia of the cervical spine treated with percutaneous vertebroplasty.

We will discuss a potential role of percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) in the management of patients with severe fibrous dysplasia of the spine with multiple cervical lesions and C2-C3 pathologic fractures that may not be a good surgical candidate. Polyostotic fibrous dysplasia involvement of the cervical spine is rare. Review of literature indicates only few reported cases of surgical management with one case of mortality indicating increased risks associated with surgical intervention. While PVP is commonly used for the treatment of osteoporotic thoracolumbar vertebral compression fractures,

Palpatory diagnosis of plagiocephaly.

INTRODUCTION: The term plagiocephaly, from the Greek plagios (oblique) and kephalê (head), means distortion of the head, and refers clinically to cranial asymmetry. Cranial Osteopathy, since it was first proposed, has focussed upon the diagnosis and treatment of birth trauma and cranial asymmetries, and consequently specific therapy for plagiocephalic deformities has been described. Osteopathic manipulation also has been proposed as a treatment for torticollis, a condition associated with plagiocephaly. For these reasons, we decided to look at the mechanics of the occipital bone and the adjace
