Storm impacts on phytoplankton community dynamics in lakes.

In many regions across the globe, extreme weather events such as storms have increased in frequency, intensity, and duration due to climate change. Ecological theory predicts that such extreme events should have large impacts on ecosystem structure and function. High winds and precipitation associated with storms can affect lakes via short-term runoff events from watersheds and physical mixing of the water column. In addition, lakes connected to rivers and streams will also experience flushing due to high flow rates. Although we have a well-developed understanding of how wind and precipitation

Thermochemical and electrochemical aspects of carbon dioxide methanation: A sustainable approach to generate fuel via waste to energy theme.

Sustainable generation of green energy and fine chemicals from carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most desirable and promising route for justifying the atmospheric CO2 build-up and carbon sequestration. This additionally serves to mitigate or defer global warming and avoid serious climate change. Renewable carbon is a possible source to reduce CO2 emission and avoid the combustion of coal and petroleum products. In this context, there is a dire need to introduce modern industrial procedures to develop new carbon recycling strategies for CO2, like spent carbon from CO2. The role of diverse industrial

Community Biological Ammonium Demand: A Conceptual Model for Cyanobacteria Blooms in Eutrophic Lakes.

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) are enhanced by anthropogenic pressures, including excessive nutrient (nitrogen, N, and phosphorus, P) inputs and a warming climate. Severe eutrophication in aquatic systems is often manifested as non-N2-fixing CyanoHABs (e.g., Microcystis spp.), but the biogeochemical relationship between N inputs/dynamics and CyanoHABs needs definition. Community biological ammonium (NH4+) demand (CBAD) relates N dynamics to total microbial productivity and NH4+ deprivation in aquatic systems. A mechanistic conceptual model was constructed by combining nutrient

Frost hardening and dehardening potential in temperate trees from winter to budburst.

We investigated how deciduous trees can adjust their freezing resistance in response to temperature during the progress of the ecodormancy phase, from midwinter to budburst. We regularly sampled twigs of four different temperate deciduous tree species from January to the leaf-out date. Using computer-controlled freezers and climate chambers, the freezing resistance of buds was measured directly after sampling and also after the application of artificial hardening and dehardening treatments, simulating cold and warm spells. The thermal time to budburst in forcing conditions (c. 20°C) was also q

Nitrogen Oxides in Early Earth's Atmosphere as Electron Acceptors for Life's Emergence.

We quantify the amount of nitrogen oxides (NOx) produced through lightning and photochemical processes in the Hadean atmosphere to be available in the Hadean ocean for the emergence of life. Atmospherically generated nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) are the most attractive high-potential electron acceptors for pulling and enabling crucial redox reactions of autotrophic metabolic pathways at submarine alkaline hydrothermal vents. The Hadean atmosphere, dominated by CO2 and N2, will produce nitric oxide (NO) when shocked by lightning. Photochemical reactions involving NO and H2O vapor will then

Wastewater treatment and public health in Nunavut: a microbial risk assessment framework for the Canadian Arctic.

Wastewater management in Canadian Arctic communities is influenced by several geographical factors including climate, remoteness, population size, and local food-harvesting practices. Most communities use trucked collection services and basic treatment systems, which are capable of only low-level pathogen removal. These systems are typically reliant solely on natural environmental processes for treatment and make use of existing lagoons, wetlands, and bays. They are operated in a manner such that partially treated wastewater still containing potentially hazardous microorganisms is released int

Production and retention of methylmercury in inundated boreal forest soils.

The Flooded Uplands Dynamics Experiment (FLUDEX) was an ecosystem-scale study examining the production of methylmercury (MeHg) and greenhouse gases from reservoirs constructed on an upland boreal forest landscape in order to quantify their dependence upon carbon stores. We detail the within-reservoir production and storage of MeHg before, during, and nine years after the experiment. The reservoirs were net MeHg producers during the first two years of flooding, and net demethylating systems afterward. During years 1-3, a rapid pulse of MeHg and total Hg was observed in floodwater, followed by s

Unequivocal morphological diagnosis of fungi in morphologically abnormal nails.

AIMS: To analyse the prevalence of fungi in abnormal nails by morphological diagnosis. Prevalence studies of onychomycoses in temperate climate zones have yielded widely varying rates, possibly reflecting the confounding effects of referral bias, sampling specificity and intrinsic sensitivity of the diagnostic techniques employed. METHODS AND RESULTS: The method employed to identify fungi in nails entailed primary fixation using a non-formaldehyde-based coagulative fixative (BoonFix; Finetec, Japan) and microwave-enhanced processing to histology, followed by staining the paraffin sections wit

Multicriteria analysis of water quality models for simulating Cryptosporidium oocysts at the watershed scale.

Cryptosporidium is an environmentally robust pathogen responsible for severe waterborne disease. As a result, the emergence of Cryptosporidium in surface water has become an increasing concern for drinking water providers. However, simulating Cryptosporidium with available water quality models remains challenging due to its environmental persistence. With limited work available on modeling Cryptosporidium loading, a systematic review is warranted to examine the potential use of water quality models. This review considered twelve water quality models for simulating Cryptosporidium loading, incl

Pathogenesis versus symbiosis: a dual perspective on plant-microbe interactions.

Plants function as integral components of soil ecosystems, embedded within diverse microbial consortia that engage in continuous chemical and informational exchange. This molecular dialog governs how plants distinguish harmful, neutral, and beneficial microbes, transforming the rhizosphere into a dynamic signaling interface. Microbial interactions operate along a chemical continuum in which metabolites, volatiles, peptides, and other small molecules act across aqueous, lipidic, and chemically heterogeneous microenvironments to shape recognition and response. The physicochemical organization of

Bayesian Spatiotemporal Wombling.

Stochastic process models for spatiotemporal data underlying random fields find substantial utility in a range of scientific disciplines. Subsequent to predictive inference on the values of the random field (or spatial surface indexed continuously over time) at arbitrary space-time coordinates, scientific interest often turns to gleaning information regarding zones of rapid spatial-temporal change. We develop Bayesian modeling and inference for directional rates of change along a given surface. These surfaces, which demarcate regions of rapid change, are referred to as "wombling" surface bound

Diversity of Pharmaceuticals Enhances Antibiotic Resistance in the Invertebrate Gut via Biofilm-Mediated Mechanisms.

The environmental accumulation of non-antibiotic pharmaceuticals is an emerging driver of antibiotic resistance. While individual compounds are known to shape the soil resistome, and contaminant diversity also plays a role, the impact of pharmaceutical diversity on the gut resistome of soil invertebrates remains unclear. Here, we combined metagenomics and metaproteomics to examine the collembolan gut and soil resistome across a gradient of pharmaceutical diversity under diurnal warming. Increasing pharmaceutical diversity at a constant total concentration significantly enriched antibiotic resi

Lifecycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Raw Steel Production Plants in the US.

We evaluate cradle-to-gate lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions for each U.S. steel production plant in 2022, accounting for uncertainty and spatial heterogeneity in ironmaking and steelmaking technologies, supply chain network dynamics, and material, fuel, and electricity supply. In 2022, the U.S. produced 81 million metric tons (mmt) of raw steel, with associated lifecycle emissions of 102 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (mmt CO2e), with 95 mmt emitted domestically. The largest emission source is on-site combustion and processes at steel plants (49% of total emissions), follow

Rice cold tolerance: Physiological responses, molecular regulatory networks, and improvement strategies.

Low-temperature stress is a critical abiotic constraint that severely impairs rice yield and quality, posing a substantial threat to global food security-especially as rice, a staple food for more than half of the world's population, is inherently susceptible to cold stress. This review systematically summarizes the typical phenotypic and physiological impairments induced by cold stress across key rice growth stages, and elaborates on the multi-layered molecular regulatory networks underpinning rice cold tolerance, which integrate the entire process of cold signal perception, intracellular tra

Interfacial and emulsifying behavior of plant-based microgels via complex coacervation.

In recent years, rising global protein demand and increasing awareness of sustainability, climate change, and animal welfare issues have accelerated the shift toward plant-based foods. Despite their promise as sustainable animal-protein alternatives, plant proteins are often limited by inherent astringency associated with high friction and poor lubrication. In this work, pH-responsive microgels derived from liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) of deamidated β-conglycinin (D-β-CG) and chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) were engineered to modulate interfacial behavior and lubrication in dairy syste

An enhanced methodology for hydraulic and thermodynamic analyses of the column performances of a flue gas decarbonization system.

The urgent need to combat climate change has heightened efforts to reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, particularly from industrial sources such as power plants and the transportation sector. Therefore, decarbonization is necessary, yet the process remains costly due to infrastructure and operational challenges. This study proposes a methodology for analyzing and improving the performance of solvent-based carbon capture systems using absorber and stripper columns. The methodology incorporates thermal and hydraulic analyses, as well as the column internal designs to identify inefficiencies a

Design and verification of a hyperspectral instrument for atmospheric and water optical properties observations.

Long-term, continuous in-situ observations of atmospheric and water optical properties are crucial for understanding the impacts of climate change, revealing pathways of atmospheric material transport, and studying air-sea interactions. For ocean color satellite sensors, sustained in-situ measurements are crucial in supporting their on-orbit calibration, the validation of high-level data products, and the development of data processing algorithms. This study presents what we believe to be a novel autonomous instrument called the hyperspectral sun photometer (HSP) designed for long-term, contin
