Transcranial magnetic stimulation of the left angular gyrus during encoding does not impair associative memory performance.

The left angular gyrus (AG) is thought to play a critical role in episodic retrieval and has been implicated in the recollection of specific details of prior episodes. Motivated by recent fMRI studies in which it was reported that elevated neural activity in left AG during study is predictive of subsequent associative memory, the present study investigated whether the region plays a causal role in associative memory encoding. Participants underwent online transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) while encoding word pairs prior to an associative memory test. We predicted that TMS to left AG duri

Does tDCS over prefrontal cortex improve episodic memory retrieval? Potential importance of time of day.

We report 4 experiments aiming to replicate and extend the finding that anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over dorsolateral prefrontal cortex after encoding and just prior to retrieval improves accuracy on an episodic recollection task. Our first 3 experiments failed to replicate the tDCS effect in planned analyses, but post-hoc analyses uncovered tDCS effects on recollection accuracy during morning sessions. To further investigate, Experiment 4 randomly assigned participants to morning or afternoon sessions. As predicted, tDCS (compared to sham stimulation) improved recoll

Impact of oscillatory tDCS targeting left prefrontal cortex on source memory retrieval.

Research on transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has grown rapidly, but there is controversy regarding whether and how tDCS could impact memory performance. We report a study that addressed this question by examining the effects of oscillatory tDCS (otDCS) on subsequent episodic memory performance and concomitant recordings of neural oscillations. Neural oscillations in the theta band (4-7 Hz) have been shown to be important for episodic memory and especially for source memory retrieval. Here, we tested the effects of anodal otDCS at theta (5.5 Hz) over the left DLPFC on theta oscill

Prefrontal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) enhances behavioral and EEG markers of proactive control.

This study examined the effects of stimulation targeting dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) on behavioral and neural oscillatory markers of proactive cognitive control in healthy adults. We hypothesized that active stimulation targeting the DLPFC would enhance proactive control compared to sham, leading to changes in the pattern of error rates and gamma-band power on the Dot Pattern Expectancy (DPX) task. We recorded EEG while participants completed the DPX, after receiving either 20 minutes of active DLPFC stimulation at 2 mA or sham stimulation in a counterbalanced within-participants de

Alcohol and pharmacologically similar sedatives impair encoding and facilitate consolidation of both recollection and familiarity in episodic memory.

Alcohol and other pharmacologically similar sedatives (i.e., GABAA positive allosteric modulators or PAMs) impair the encoding of new episodic memories but retroactively facilitate the consolidation of recently encoded memories. These effects are consistent for recollection (i.e., the retrieval of details) but some mixed results have been reported for familiarity (i.e., a feeling of knowing a stimulus was presented). Here, with dual-process models, we reanalyzed prior work testing the effects of GABAA PAMs at encoding or consolidation. Contrary to previous conclusions, we show that GABAA PAMs

Visual feedback of own tics increases tic frequency in patients with Tourette's syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is characterized by motor and phonic tics. It is unknown how paying attention to one's own tics might modulate tic frequency. We determined tic frequency in freely ticcing GTS patients while they were being filmed. In Study 1, we investigated 12 patients (1) alone in a room (baseline); (2) alone in front of a mirror. In Study 2, we replicated these conditions in 16 patients and additionally examined how watching a video, in which the individual was shown not ticcing, affected their tic frequency. In both studies, tic frequency was significantly higher when

The developing concept of implicit awareness: a rejoinder and reply to commentaries on Mograbi and Morris (2013).

We reply to commentaries on our discussion paper (2013), clarifying our position on the points raised and expanding the scope of our description. We discuss, in particular, the dichotomy between explicit/implicit processes, the heterogeneity of anosognosia, the notion of awareness as an emergent process, and the pervasive role of emotion on awareness expression. We conclude by pointing to clinical implications of the phenomenon of implicit awareness.

Eliciting the implicit: metacognition in Alzheimer's disease.

The literature on metacognition in Alzheimer's disease points to there being implicit and explicit routes to the control and monitoring of memory. For instance, despite not being able to make predictions of performance which reflect future behavior, people with Alzheimer's disease can regulate effectively the amount of time they spend studying an item. Thus, empirical tasks from the metacognition literature shed some light on the idea of implicit awareness. But the complex pattern of preservation and impairment in metacognitive knowledge also points to other dimensions on which we need to cons

Implicit emotional awareness in frontotemporal dementia.

The preserved "implicit awareness" in patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) presenting anosognosia has opened a new branch of research regarding explicit-implicit integration. The behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), contrary to AD, would present impaired anosognosia-related implicit awareness due to a dysfunctional implicit integration of contextual information caused by an abnormal fronto-insular-temporal network. Loss of insight and anosognosia are pervasive in bvFTD, but no reports have assessed the implicit emotional awareness in this condition. We emphasize the need to i

Effects of transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) during a mixed-gambling risky decision-making task.

Previous studies have led to hypothesizing that right DLPFC activity is related to risk propensity, but the generality of this relationship remains unclear. Here, we experimentally modulated DLPFC activity in 47 healthy, female volunteers during a risky decision-making task, where monetary gambles defined by potential win, loss, and outcome probability were evaluated in the absence of feedback and uncertainty. Three participant groups, receiving left anodal/right cathodal, right anodal/left cathodal, and sham tDCS, were compared. Overall, participants performed the task well above chance level

My urge, my tic - a missing link between urges and tic inhibition.

Abstract Despite the fact that premonitory urges precede most tics in patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS), the voluntariness of tic elicitation and its suppressibility as a response to these urges still remains unclear. Moreover, there are no systematic studies examining the association between urge intensity and the ability to suppress tics. As shown by behavioral, neurophysiological, and imaging data, sensorimotor networks in GTS exhibit altered patterns of organization modulated through interactions with frontomesial networks of volitional inhibition.

On the functional anatomy of the urge-for-action.

Several common neuropsychiatric disorders (e.g., obsessive-compulsive disorder, Tourette syndrome (TS), autistic spectrum disorder) are associated with unpleasant bodily sensations that are perceived as an urge for action. Similarly, many of our everyday behaviors are also characterized by bodily sensations that we experience as urges for action. Where do these urges originate? In this paper, we consider the nature and the functional anatomy of "urges-for-action," both in the context of everyday behaviors such as yawning, swallowing, and micturition, and in relation to clinical disorders in wh

[What do we know about compassion focused therapy for anxiety and depressive symptoms: A scoping review].

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety and depressive disorders are among the most common psychiatric conditions and have a high comorbidity rate. While cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) remains the gold standard psychotherapeutic treatment, its protocols which focus on a specific disorder have limitations when faced with clinical complexity. Transdiagnostic approaches aim to overcome these constraints by targeting processes common to different mental disorders. Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) is part of this approach. It is particularly aimed at patients with overwhelming shame and marked self-criticism, often

Lipid signaling: sleep, synaptic plasticity, and neuroprotection.

Increasing evidence indicates that bioactive lipids participate in the regulation of synaptic function and dysfunction. We have demonstrated that signaling mediated by platelet-activating factor (PAF) and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2-synthesized PGE2 is involved in synaptic plasticity, memory, and neuronal protection [Clark GD, Happel LT, Zorumski CF, Bazan NG. Comparing the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and implementation of low-dose oral modified release morphine in people with chronic breathlessness: a synopsis of a RCT and process evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Chronic breathlessness is common and disabling in chronic medical conditions. There is good rationale to use opioids from neuroscience and exercise laboratory studies. OBJECTIVES: We assessed the 56-day effectiveness, cost-consequences and safety of long-acting oral morphine for breathlessness in people with cardio-respiratory diseases or cancer. METHODS: We conducted a parallel-group, randomised, placebo-controlled trial in 11 UK outpatient services, comparing 10-20 mg daily oral morphine with placebo (and blinded laxative) in people with moderate to severe breathlessness, with

Triple versus guideline antiplatelet therapy to prevent recurrence after acute ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack: the TARDIS RCT.

BACKGROUND: Two antiplatelet agents are better than one for preventing recurrent stroke after acute ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA). Therefore, intensive treatment with three agents might be better still, providing it does not cause undue bleeding. OBJECTIVE: To compare the safety and efficacy of intensive therapy with guideline antiplatelet therapy for acute ischaemic stroke and TIA. DESIGN: International prospective randomised open-label blinded end-point parallel-group superiority clinical trial. SETTING: Acute hospitals at 106 sites in four countries. PARTICIPANTS:

Confounds in Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Part II: Modifiers.

In the first part of this three-part series, we reviewed the mechanisms that cause nuisance signals in fMRI data. Here, in the second part of the series, we review "human factors" that modulate these confounding mechanisms. The modulators may be trait characteristics such as age or bodyweight, or they may be state dependencies that alter the relative contributions of nuisance signals in the fMRI data. A wide array of psychological (e.g., motivation/arousal, cognitive strategy, task engagement), lifestyle (e.g., exercise, sleep, and dietary habits), experimental (e.g., scanner anxiety, task-rel
