Exploring the internet's role in sexual compulsivity and out of control sexual thoughts/behaviour: a qualitative study of gay and bisexual men in New York City.

Sexual compulsivity and the internet have been investigated separately among gay and bisexual men for their connection to sexual risk behaviour, yet little research has addressed the intersection. This analysis explored qualitative interview data from 111 gay and bisexual men experiencing out of control sexual thoughts and/or behaviours, about the role of the internet in their lives. For some it facilitated their problematic sexual thoughts and behaviours and, to some extent, was a distraction from important facets of their lives. Equally, men identified strategies to limit their internet use

Atypical symptom presentations in children and adolescents with obsessive compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Common symptom presentations in youth with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) are easily recognized and are included in the Children's Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (CY-BOCS) symptom checklist. However, some youth may occasionally present with atypical or unusual symptoms that are less readily recognized as OCD and may be confused with other disorders that sometimes overlap, such as autism spectrum disorder or even psychosis. METHODS: Case synopses which are thematically linked and exemplify and illustrate two distinct types of unusual or atypical symptom presentations ar

Association of COMT, BDNF and 5-HTT functional polymorphisms with personality characteristics.

Background: The real impact of genetic factors on personality is still unknown, even if in literature about 50% of variance in personality traits are considered genetically determined. The determination of the genetic variance in personality traits could promote psychological well-being and the prevention of psychopathologies, because there are many experimental evidences showing that mental illness is associated to personality. Numerous studies have showed that Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and serotonin transporter (5-HTT) are genes whose varia

Social media as an effective therapeutic tool for addressing obsessive-compulsive disorder: a case study.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic but very treatable medical condition. Adhering to the therapy plan is considered one of the biggest challenges for OCD patients, especially when communities are insecure due to armed conflicts and political upheavals. This paper documents the results of using social media platforms (especially Facebook Messenger, which provides free internet access) to manage the symptoms of a young female with chronic OCD. The results suggest that social media can be a potentially effective therapeutic tool, mainly in situations where armed conflicts, displacem

Tridimensional personality questionnaire factors in major depressive disorder: relationship to anxiety disorder comorbidity and age of onset.

OBJECTIVE: We used the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ) to study the relationship between temperamental traits and comorbid anxiety disorders as well as age of onset of major depressive disorder (MDD) in 263 patients with MDD. METHODS: Patients recruited for a large clinical study on MDD underwent a Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R assessment and were administered the self-rated TPQ [mean age = 39.5 +/- 10.5 years, women = 138 (53%), initial 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D-17) score = 19.6 +/- 3.4]. The TPQ was scored for three previously identifie

Patients who complain of social dysfunction as their main problem: II. Comparison with other outpatients seen for behavior therapy.

Forty socially dysfunctional patients (avoidant personality disorder, DSM-III) and 76 other patients also seen for behavioral psychotherapy rated 30 items from the Social Situations Questionnaire on dimensions of distress and frequency of involvement. A discriminant function analysis showed that socially dysfunctional patients formed a distinct group as compared with other patients on ratings of distress. The main characteristics were over initiating social contact and carrying on a conversation with people one does not know. The separation between groups on the rating of frequency of involvem

COVID-19 Pandemic and Mental Health of Vulnerable Two Groups: Developmental Trauma of the Child-Adolescents and Work Disaster of Health Care Workers.

COVID-19 has spread worldwide. People are struggling to adjust to a new normal, but changes in their daily routines are also causing stress. A person may feel depressed, uneasy, or suicidal and may complain of symptoms such as panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disease (PTSD), psychosis, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or paranoia when personal resilience cannot effectively process the stress. Children, adolescents, and health care workers are especially psychologically vulnerable groups in the pandemic calamity situation; therefore, a long-term intervention plan is necessary for them. When i

Low-Dose Initiation of Buprenorphine: A Narrative Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a chronic disorder in which a person loses control over the use of opioids, develops a compulsive behavior, and defends the use despite knowing the negative consequences. There are numerous treatments for OUD, including buprenorphine. Since it is displacing a full agonist opioid, precipitated withdrawal can occur with standard inductions involving buprenorphine. RECENT FINDINGS: Case reports have noted success with a low-dose initiation of buprenorphine, which is different from typical protocols, relatively limited by adverse effects when patien

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Schizophrenia: Conceptualization, Assessment and Cognitive Behavioral Treatment.

There is little doubt that schizophrenia (SZ) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are among the most severe disorders to impact humanity. They are both common, significantly disabling and have the tendency to strike during critical developmental periods in a young person's life. Schizophrenia affects approximately 1% of the global population and OCD has a lifetime prevalence of between 2% and 3% in the general population. The comorbidities in both SZ and OCD are common and frequently diagnosed, and research has generally found that comorbidities are associated with conditions that are more

Validation and assessment of the self-injurious behavior scale for tic disorders (SIBS-T).

Self-injurious behavior (SIB) is a well-known phenomenon in patients with chronic tic disorders (CTD). To investigate prospectively symptomatology of SIB in adults with CTD, we developed and validated the self-injurious behavior scale for tic disorders (SIBS-T). Patients completed the SIBS-T and a variety of assessments for tics and comorbidities. We investigated SIB frequency, internal consistency of the SIBS-T, and carried out an exploratory factor analysis (EFA). We enrolled n = 123 adult patients with CTD. SIB was reported by n = 103 patients (83.7%). The most frequently reported SIB were

Schema therapy with cognitive behaviour day-treatment in patients with treatment-resistant anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder: an uncontrolled pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Treatment resistance in patients with anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) might be caused by dysfunctional personality traits or, more specifically, early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) and schema modes, that can be treated with schema therapy (ST). AIM: To explore possible effectiveness of ST-CBT day-treatment in patients with treatment-resistant anxiety disorders and OCD in an uncontrolled pilot study. METHOD: Treatment-resistant patients with anxiety disorders or OCD (n = 27) were treated with ST-CBT day-treatment for 37 weeks on average including 11.5 therap

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms in eating disorders: A network investigation.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders (EDs) are complex, heterogeneous, and severe psychiatric syndromes. They are highly comorbid with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) which exacerbates the course of illness and impedes treatment. However, the direct functional relations between EDs and OCD symptoms remain largely unexplored. Hence, using network analysis, we investigated the relationship between ED and OCD at the level of symptoms in a heterogeneous clinical sample. METHOD: We used cross sectional data of 303 treatment-seeking patients with clinically relevant ED and OCD pathology. We constructed

Medical and psychiatric morbidity in obese women with and without binge eating.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of obesity and binge eating in a population-based sample of female twins and to examine whether the presence of binge eating was associated with a greater risk for medical and psychiatric disorders in obese women. METHOD: A population-based study of twins who were born between 1934 and 1971 and both members responded to a mailed questionnaire (individual response rate was conservatively estimated to be 64%). Data for the present study are from the first and third interview waves. In Wave 1 (1987-1989), we assessed 92% of the eligible individuals (N = 2,1

Depression and eating disorders.

Both depressive disorders and eating disorders are multidimensional and heterogeneous disorders. This paper examines the nature of their relationship by reviewing clinical descriptive, family-genetic, treatment, and biological studies that relate to the issue. The studies confirm the prominence of depressive symptoms and depressive disorders in eating disorders. Other psychiatric syndromes which occur with less frequency, such as anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorders in anorexia nervosa, or personality disorders, anxiety disorders, and substance abuse in bulimia nervosa, also pl
