Sexual minority substance use disparities: Bisexual women at elevated risk relative to other sexual minority groups.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies characterizing sexual minority substance use disparities have primarily compared lesbian/gay and bisexual individuals, respectively or in combination, to heterosexual individuals. In light of emerging evidence that bisexual individuals may have particularly elevated substance use risk, we examine differences in recent substance use between bisexual and lesbian/gay individuals using national survey data. METHODS: Data on 126,463 adults (including 8241 LGB adults) were from the 2015-2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Substance use outcomes included binge drin

Association Between High-Risk Preexisting Substance Use and Increased Postoperative Opioid Dose Use Among Adolescents Undergoing Ambulatory Orthopedic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: High-risk substance use is a public health concern among adolescents placing them at increased likelihood for opioid misuse and overdose. However, whether high-risk substance use is associated with increased postoperative opioid use remains poorly described. This study aimed to determine whether preoperative high-risk substance use is associated with increased postoperative opioid use in adolescents. METHODS: This longitudinal study included opioid-naive adolescents undergoing ambulatory orthopedic surgery. Preoperative high-risk substance use was stratified using the Brief Screen

Drug courts: a primer for the family physician.

BACKGROUND: Drug courts are a judicial response to drug-related crimes. They combine the coercive powers of the judiciary with drug treatment. This article is intended to familiarize physicians with the reasons why drug courts exist, what they are, and how physicians can assist their patients who are clients of a drug court. METHODS: Methods for this article are based upon personal experience and a search of the literature using the key words "drug rehabilitation," "drug abuse," and "criminal justice system." RESULTS: Using a three-phase approach, drug courts emphasize urine drug testing, ra

Social policy issues in narcotics abuse.

Social Policy in regard to drug abuse is presently the subject of intense controversy in this country. This paper examines the relationships between various policies with major emphasis on Treatment and Law enforcement. Specifically, it is recommended that greater use be made of civil commitment programs that give heroin and cocaine addicts a clear choice, that is, personal freedom is made contingent on drug-free, responsible behavior.

Trichotillomania and Risk of Alcohol- and Drug-Related Problems.

BACKGROUND: Trichotillomania is an understudied psychiatric disorder characterized by repeated hair-pulling resulting in hair loss. Little is known about the risk of problematic substance use in this patient group. In this nationwide matched cohort study, we investigated the association between trichotillomania and substance-related problems. METHODS: We linked various nationwide administrative and clinical registers in Sweden. Among 12,015,664 individuals living in the country from January 1, 1997, to December 31, 2020, we identified 1136 individuals with an ICD-10 diagnosis of trichotilloma

Reduction in substance use stigma following a peer-recovery specialist behavioral activation intervention.

BACKGROUND: Patients' perceptions and experiences of stigma related to substance use and methadone treatment are barriers to successful treatment of opioid use disorder, particularly among low-income and medically underserved populations. Interventions led by peer recovery specialists (PRSs) may shift stigma-related barriers. This study sought to evaluate shifts in substance use and methadone treatment stigma in the context of an evidence-based behavioral intervention adapted for PRS delivery to support methadone treatment outcomes. METHODS: We recruited patients who had recently started meth

Internalized Homonegativity and Substance Use Among U.S. Men Who Have Sex with Men Only (MSMO) and Men Who Have Sex with Men and Women (MSMW).

BACKGROUND: Internalized homonegativity may promote substance use among U.S. men who have sex with men only (MSMO) and men who have sex with men and women (MSMW). However, studies have produced mixed findings, used non-representative samples, and not adequately examined MSMW. OBJECTIVES: We investigated (1) internalized homonegativity in relation to substance use and (2) the extent of temporal change in internalized homonegativity among MSMO and MSMW. METHODS: Using merged 2002, 2006-2010, and 2011-2013 cycles of the National Survey of Family Growth-a nationally representative U.S. sample of

The role of young adult social bonds, substance problems, and sexual risk in pathways between adolescent substance use and midlife risky sexual behavior among urban African Americans.

African Americans are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections relative to other racial groups. Although substance use has been linked to risky sexual behavior, the understanding of how these associations develop over the life course remains limited, particularly the role of social bonds. This study uses structural equation modeling to examine pathways from adolescent substance use to young adult sexual risk, substance problems, and social bonds and then to midlife risky sexual behavior among African American men and women, controlling for childhood con

Transcranial magnetic stimulation, deep brain stimulation, and other forms of neuromodulation for substance use disorders: Review of modalities and implications for treatment.

Given the high prevalence of individuals diagnosed with substance use disorder, along with the elevated rate of relapse following treatment initiation, investigating novel approaches and new modalities for substance use disorder treatment is of vital importance. One such approach involves neuromodulation which has been used therapeutically for neurological and psychiatric disorders and has demonstrated positive preliminary findings for the treatment of substance use disorder. The following article provides a review of several forms of neuromodulation which warrant consideration as potential tr

Therapist Drift from CBT is Associated with Substance Use Among IPV Offenders.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol and substance abuse are associated with increased rates of intimate partner violence (IPV). Manualized treatments that target both problems are associated with improved outcomes; however, therapist drift is an understudied factor that may influence outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This secondary, observational analysis, part of a National Institute of Health (NIH) funded randomized control study (RCT; NCT07140276), examined associations between therapist drift and treatment outcomes among court-mandated male IPV offenders with alcohol and substance use disorders. Therapist drift was n

A controlled comparison of HIV and general medical referrals to a liaison psychiatry service.

A retrospective case-control study was performed to compare the patterns of psychiatric illness and treatment in 70 patients referred to the psychiatric liaison service from the HIV/AIDS team in a London teaching hospital with 70 age- and sex-matched controls referred for psychiatric assessment from general medical and surgical wards or out-patient clinics. Organic, mood, adjustment and personality disorders were the most common primary diagnoses. The rate of referral in the HIV group was five times that in the control group. The prevalence of each group of diagnoses was not significantly diff

Psychotomimetic symptoms after a moderate dose of a synthetic cannabinoid (JWH-018): implications for psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) are the largest class of novel psychoactive substances (NPS) and are associated with an increased risk of overdosing and adverse events such as psychosis. JWH-018 is one of the earliest SCs and still widely available in large parts of the world. Controlled studies to assess the safety and behavioural profiles of SCs are extremely scarce. AIM: The current study was designed to assess the psychotomimetic effects of a moderate dose of JWH-018. METHODS: Twenty-four healthy participants (10 males, 14 females) entered a placebo-controlled, double blind, wit

Pilot Test on Pre-Swim Hygiene as a Factor Limiting Trihalomethane Precursors in Pool Water by Reducing Organic Matter in an Operational Facility.

Pool water must be constantly disinfected. Chlorine compounds used to disinfect pools react with organic substances such as sweat, urine, and personal care products introduced into pool water by users and results in the formation of disinfection byproducts. Trihalomethanes (THM), including chloroform and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations, were quantified using a two-stage process: determining initial THM and chloroform levels; then searching for a cheap and easy-to-use method to improve water quality. The method proposed here to limit THM and DOC concentrations in water is controll

Self-assembled selenium nanoparticles and their application in the rapid diagnostic detection of small cell lung cancer biomarkers.

By coupling molecular imprinting, chitosan biosorption and TiO2 photocatalysis, selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) were self-assembled in a controlled manner on the molecular imprinting sites of zeolite-chitosan-TiO2 microspheres. Se NPs with different sizes and areal densities were individually synthesized by controlling the rapid adsorption of molecular-imprinted nanocomposites and photocatalytic reaction of TiO2 nanoparticles. In order to improve the sensitivity and specificity of rapid diagnostic detection, Se NPs were self-assembled again into high-order and spherically stable structures wit
