OBJECTIVES: The MRI signal intensities and the relaxation times (T1 and T2) have already been used for comparisons among various types of cysts. The signal intensities (or T1 and T2) were suggested to be related to cyst content. However, such a relationship between the relaxation rates (1/T1 and 1/T2) and the aspirated content of jaw cysts was not given. Therefore, an investigation on the determinants of the relaxation rates in the jaw cysts may be helpful in elucidating the biological basis for the differences in relaxation rates among the categories of jaw cysts.
METHODS: The aspirated cont

A 34-year-old right-handed female presented to the emergency department with a worsening headache, neck stiffness, intermittent abnormal sensation, and right arm weakness. Shortly after arrival, she had a generalized tonic-clonic seizure. A noncontrast head computed tomography scan revealed a right-sided, low-attenuating, lobulated mass ipsilateral to her arm symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an abnormal signal throughout the subarachnoid space and increased fluid-attenuated inversion recovery sequence signal contralateral to the mass. This presentation suggested a false localizati

The authors describe a case of giant cell tumor (GCT) with secondary aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) in a 44-year-old man with chronic, intermittent knee pain. A unique feature is the presentation of GCT with an ossified extraosseous soft tissue mass. Radiograph demonstrates a multiloculated lytic lesion in the distal meta-epiphyseal region of the femur with an adjacent extraosseous soft tissue mass. The soft tissue mass was partially ossified along its margin and internal septa. MRI demonstrates a multiloculated lesion in the distal femur with multiple fluid-fluid levels and cortical penetration o

RATIONALE: Biliary cysts (BC) are rare dilatations of various parts of a biliary tract. They account for approximately 1% of all benign biliary diseases. Total cyst excision and Roux-Y hepaticojejunostomy is the treatment method of choice in most patients. In this paper, a novel surgical treatment with the use of internal biliary and pancreatic catheters was presented.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 21-years-old woman with a giant choledochal cyst of Todani IA type presenting with abdominal pain, nausea, fever and palpable abdominal mass. It had been previously drained as a misdiagnosed pancreatic cyst

Overexpression of aquaporin 2 (AQP2) was observed and suggested to be involved in fluid secretion leading to cyst enlargement in polycystic kidney disease (PKD). The cyst expansion deteriorates the renal function and, therefore, therapies targeting cyst enlargement are of clinical interest. Of note, inhibition of vasopressin function using vasopressin 2 receptor (V2R) antagonist which decreased cAMP production along with AQP2 production and function can slow cyst growth in ADPKD. This finding supports the role of AQP2 in cyst enlargement. Steviol, a major metabolite of the sweetening compound

A 12-year-old, 19.8-kg, female neutered Nova Scotia Duck Tolling retriever was referred for investigation of a heart murmur. The dog was asymptomatic at the time of examination. On cardiac auscultation, a soft (2/6) diastolic heart murmur, louder at the left cardiac base, was present. Two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography revealed a cyst-like structure attached to the aortic valve leaflets. Doppler examination showed that the cyst was fluid-filled and connected to the aortic and ventricular lumen. A moderate aortic valve insufficiency was also present. The left heart was mildly dilate

A woman in her 60s presented with a rare complication of an ovarian cyst which many clinicians may not consider at first presentation. She was admitted with life-threatening staphylococcus aureus sepsis. She presented shocked with a collapse following a 2-day history of diarrhoea, vomiting and pain in the right iliac fossa. She was taken to theatre where a ruptured, widely infarcted left ovarian serous cystadenofibroma was discovered with over 2 litres of purulent fluid exuding from the cyst into the abdomen. She had a left cyst removal, hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy perform

Hydatid disease is a parasitic tapeworm infestation. Anaphylactic reactions as a result of cyst perforation generally occur after trauma during a spread of cystic fluid in the intravascular space, which may also initiate anaphylaxis. The reported case was a 17-year-old boy who was admitted to the hospital emergency department with a sudden onset of nausea, vomiting and fainting, resulting in death. The cause of his sudden death was unknown. Autopsy macroscopically revealed hydatid cysts in the liver. In the histopathological examination, hydatid cyst was recognized by scolices and also an infl

OBJECTIVE: The histogenesis of craniopharyngioma is not fully understood. We encountered a ciliated craniopharyngioma, the details of which may shed light on the histogeny of craniopharyngioma in general.
PATIENT: A 74-year-old man presented with visual disturbance. Computed tomography showed an intra-suprasellar cyst including a solid tumor. Transsphenoidal surgery was performed. During surgery, the cyst was found to contain mucoid milky-white fluid and a solid tumor 1 cm in diameter. Histologically, the tumor was shown to be a papillary type craniopharyngioma with foci of ciliated columnar

A 68-year-old man visited our hospital with complaints of abdominal pain and fever. Physical examination disclosed findings consistent with acute abdomen. Computed tomographic (CT) scan revealed a 5 cm cystic mass contiguous with the dome of the bladder and fluid collection in the peritoneal cavity. Cystogram demonstrated deformity of the bladder and no communication between the mass and the bladder. A diagnosis of generalized peritonitis either due to the infected urachal cyst or ruptured bladder was made, and emergency exploratory laparotomy was carried out. Based upon findings consistent wi

A 6-year-old cat that was laterally recumbent and panting was evaluated because of a 10-day history of progressive neurologic abnormalities. Despite aggressive treatment, the cat died on the day of admission. At necropsy, a 1.5-cm-diameter, fluid-filled cyst was found in the white matter of the left cerebrum. The cyst was identified as a coenurus of Taenia serialis, on the basis of the cyst wall, distribution of scolices, and the shape and dimensions of rostellar hooks. Scolices were found in varying stages of ontogeny, ranging from undifferentiated to nearly mature. Taenia serialis has a cani

Pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs) may occur in several hereditary syndromes, although their frequency, phenotype, and clinical implications differ considerably across entities. This review summarizes the spectrum of hereditary-associated PCLs, focusing on von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1, and other hereditary pancreatic cancer predisposition syndromes. The lesions most commonly encountered are simple cysts, serous cystic neoplasms, and intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms, whereas cystic pancreatic

Cytological examination of the fluid from subdural hygromas revealed congenital Toxoplasmosis in 14 of 43 infants (32,5%). Conversely, subdural hygroma was a significant clinical symptom in 42 cases of congenital Toxoplasmosis. In 9 cases trophozoites or cystes of Toxoplasma Gondii were found in the subdural fluid, and in 4 of these in the cerebrospinal fluid as well. Since serological investigations in young infants and particularly severe infections often remain inconclusive the cytological examination of cerebrospinal fluid is emphasized importance of.

The case of a 3-year-old male child is reported who had a history of congenital hydrocephalus, treated by VP shunting. Severe complications with VP shunting are rare, but in this case the shunt had apparently perforated the liver, causing a pseudocyst to form and subsequent hepatomegaly. The shunt was revised surgically and the pseudocyst resected.

OBJECTIVE: Spinal extradural arachnoid cysts (SEDC) are rare primary spinal lesions, accounting for less than 1% of all spinal epidural lesions. The literature contains only case reports of this pathology, and treatment remains controversial due to its rarity. Major reported SEDC cases are caused by leaking out of cerebrospinal fluid through a dural defect in the thecal sac forming an extradural cyst. Other reports describe non-communicating SEDC cases where the dural defect was not identified. We report a literature review on SEDC and the case of a 53 year‑old female who presented with type I

Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) plays crucial role in renal cyst expansion via increase in fluid accumulation. Inhibition of CFTR has been proposed to retard cyst development and enlargement in polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Pinostrobin, a bioactive natural flavonoid, possesses several pharmacological effects. The present study investigated pharmacological effects of pinostrobin on CFTR-mediated Cl- secretion and renal cyst expansion in in vitro and in vivo models. Pinostrobin (10 and 50 μM) reduced number of MDCK cell-derived cyst colonies and inhibited cyst expan

Cardiac involvement is an uncommon presentation of hydatid cyst disease, accounting for approximately 0.5-2% of all hydatidosis cases, and mainly occurring as part of a systemic infection. Herein, we report on an isolated cardiac hydatid cyst in a 57-year-old woman. She presented with a complaint of squeezing chest pain of 10 month-history. On transthoracic echocardiography, a mass like appearance with heterogeneous echogenicity was noted in the left ventricular wall, suggesting a primary cardiac tumor or a mass compressing the left ventricle. Thoracic computed tomography findings were reporte

BACKGROUND: We present a case of a hydatid cyst located in the left thigh.
CASE REPORT: A 67-year-old man was admitted to our department with a 10 × 5 × 4 cm mass in the medial compartment of the left thigh. Computed tomography scan indicated possible hydatidosis. Serological testing (indirect hemagglutination) was positive for hydatidosis. The patient was operated seven years ago for liver hydatidosis.
RESULTS: The patient, after evaluation, underwent surgical excision of the cyst under epidural anesthesia. The cyst was located in the left quadriceps muscle; had a soft, elastic substance; w
