Ureterocele is a cystic dilatation of the intravesical submucosal ureter, with an obstructed orifice. Endoscopic treatment is one of the most common option for surgical treatment. In intravesical ureterocele, the punctures must be made just above the junction between the ureterocele and the bladder floor. We commonly use a 8-9.8 Fr cystoscope, with a 5 Fr working channel, a metallic needle for bulking agent injection 3.7 Fr. In selected cases we also use electric or laser probes to decompress the ureterocele. When evidence of decompression is verified and vesicoureteral reflux is excluded, ant

INTRODUCTION: Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a degenerative condition caused by spinal cord compression, leading to significant neurological impairments. While decompression surgery is the gold standard for treating CSM, recovery is often incomplete, prompting the need for adjunct therapies. Erythropoietin (EPO), widely used for anemia treatment, has shown beneficial effects on the nervous system. This study evaluates the combined effects of decompression surgery and EPO administration in a rat model of compressive myelopathy.
METHODS: We developed a rat model of compressive myelopa

PURPOSE: Surgical management of ophthalmic Graves' disease traditionally involves, in order, orbital decompression, followed by strabismus surgery and eyelid surgery. Nunery et al. previously described two distinct sub-types of patients with ophthalmic Graves' disease; Type I patients exhibit no restrictive myopathy (no diplopia) as opposed to Type II patients who do exhibit restrictive myopathy (diplopia) and are far more likely to develop new-onset worsening diplopia following medial wall and floor decompression. Strabismus surgery involving extra-ocular muscle recession has, in turn, been s

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic Chiari I malformation is treated with suboccipital decompression and C1 laminectomy. However, whether the dura should be opened (durotomy) or enlarged with a graft (duraplasty) remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To compare outcomes in adult Chiari I malformation patients treated with duraplasty, durotomy, or without dural opening ("mini-decompression").
METHODS: A retrospective, multicenter, population-based cohort study was performed of all adult patients surgically treated for a Chiari I malformation at 3 regional neurosurgical centers between 2005 and 2017. Three differen

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Although total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) have been widely accepted as highly cost-effective procedures, spine surgery for the treatment of degenerative conditions does not share the same perception among stakeholders. In particular, the sustainability of the outcome and cost-effectiveness following lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) surgery compared with THA/TKA remain uncertain.
PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to estimate the lifetime incremental cost-utility ratios for decompression and decompression with fusion for focal LSS versus THA and

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Both Transforaminal (TF) and Interlaminar (IL) endoscopic approaches are established techniques of decompression for lumbar compressive radiculopathy. In the absence of adequate literature, there is always some dilemma in selecting the approach for endoscopic decompression leading to long learning curves and high chances of inadequate decompression, iatrogenic instability, dural tear, or dysesthesia. Hence authors propose a new surgical nomenclature and algorithm for selection of endoscopic approach.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 396 of 626 consecutive patient

PURPOSE: The choice of surgical treatment for ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) remains controversial. A cost-utility analysis was performed for 4 surgical UNE treatment options. We hypothesized that simple decompression would emerge as the most cost-effective strategy.
METHODS: A cost-utility analysis was performed from the societal perspective. A decision analytic model was designed comparing 4 strategies: (1) simple decompression followed by a salvage surgery (anterior submuscular transposition) for a poor outcome, (2) anterior subcutaneous transposition followed by a salvage surgery for

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of a case series.
OBJECTIVES: Giant thoracic disc herniations remain a surgical challenge and historically have been associated with significant complications. While neurological outcomes have improved with the abandonment of decompressive laminectomy, the attempt to minimize surgical complications and associated morbidities continues through less-invasive approaches. With the current study, we describe a surgical technique to treat giant thoracic disc herniations while minimizing approach-related morbidity.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the ability of two collagen crosslinking agents to restore mechanical properties to lumbar joints destabilized by surgical decompression procedures.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Posterior decompression surgery is a common procedure indicated for tissue pathology that interferes with surrounding neural structures. Previous in vitro, analytical, and clinical studies have shown that removal of load-supporting tissue can compromise joint stability mandating so

BACKGROUND: Herpes simplex encephalitis is the most common type of sporadic encephalitis worldwide. Frank intracerebral hemorrhage complicating the disease course in herpes simplex encephalitis patients is rare, especially cases where surgical decompression is necessary. Here, we report a previously healthy female with herpes simplex encephalitis who underwent surgical decompression due to temporal lobe hemorrhage.
CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy 34-year-old Korean female presented with fever, myalgia and severe headache. Brain MRI showed a high T2 signal intensity change and diffuse

OBJECTIVE: There are mainly two surgical methods for lumbar foraminal stenosis, simple decompression of the extra-foraminal portion or decompression with fixation surgery. However the indication of either method is controversial. The aim of this study is to show our surgical method and results.
METHOD: In six cases diagnosed as lumbar foraminal stenosis with or without far lateral disc herniation by X-ray, CTscan, MRI and nerve conduction velocity, decompression surgery was performed by our paramedian method (Wiltse approach). BACKGROUND: Anterior interosseous nerve syndrome is characterized by paralysis of the flexor digitorum profundus, the flexor pollicis longus and the pronator quadratus muscles without sensory loss. Extended exploration of the anterior interosseous nerve is the surgical treatment of choice. The present study evaluates the feasibility of an endoscopic approach for nerve decompression.
METHODS: Preparation of the anterior interosseous nerve was performed in ten human cadaver arms. Subsequently, one female patient suffering from anterior interosseous nerve syndrome was endoscopically operated on.

Spinal stenosis refers to narrowing of the spinal canal with encroachment of the neural structures by adjacent bone and soft tissue. Surgical treatment usually offers greater pain relief and functional recovery than non-surgical treatment. Nevertheless, neurological complications from decompressive laminectomy have been reported to range between 1% and 33%. Therefore, the purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the efficacy of transcranial motor evoked potentials (TcMEP) and continuous electromyography (EMG) to prevent irreversible pyramidal tract damage during decompressive laminect

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: The optimal surgical treatment of degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS) is a subject of ongoing debate, particularly regarding the choice between decompression-only and fusion surgery. Flexion-extension radiographs (FER) are commonly used to assess segmental instability and guide this decision, but in symptomatic patients, their reliance on active patient motion can lead to underestimation of instability that may be associated with postoperative outcomes. Upright-supine imaging (USI), which compares upright radiographs with supine magnetic resonance imaging, assesses

Acute neurologic deterioration is not a rare event in the surgical decompression for thoracic spinal stenosis. We report a case of transient paraparesis after decompressive laminectomy in a 50-yr-old male patient with multi-level thoracic ossification of the ligamentum flavum and cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament. Decompressive laminectomy from T9 to T11 was performed without gross neurological improvement. Two weeks after the first operation, laminoplasty from C4 to C6 and additional decompressive laminectomies of T3, T4, T6, and T8 were performed. Paraparesis devel

Controversy surrounds treatment of disc-associated 'wobbler' syndrome in the dog, centring on the choice of method of surgical decompression used. In this review, details of previously published case series are summarised and critically examined in an attempt to compare success rates and complications of different types of surgery. Unequivocally accurate comparisons were difficult because of differences in methods of case recording between series. Short-term success rates were high (approximately 80 per cent), but there was a high rate of recurrence (around 20 per cent) after any surgical trea
