Maternal depression as a risk factor for family homelessness.

OBJECTIVES: We estimated the effects of maternal depression during the postpartum year, which is often an unexpected event, on subsequent homelessness and risk of homelessness in a national sample of urban, mostly low-income mothers. METHODS: We used logistic regression models to estimate associations between maternal depression during the postpartum year and both homelessness and risk of homelessness 2 to 3 years later, controlling for maternal and family history of depression, prenatal housing problems, and other covariates. Risk factors for homelessness included experiencing evictions or f

Confinement and other psychosocial factors in perinatal depression: a transcultural study in Singapore.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the prevalence, socio-cultural and psychosocial risk factors for perinatal depression in Singaporean women. METHOD: A prospective cohort of 559 women was interviewed antenatally and at six weeks' postpartum at a tertiary hospital. Women were interviewed for diagnosis of depression using a two-stage design, with a screening questionnaire and diagnostic interview. RESULTS: Postnatally, a negative confinement experience was associated with depression. Other independent factors included poor emotional support, a past history of depression, unplanned pregnancy and perce

Effect of postpartum anaemia on maternal health-related quality of life: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum anaemia remains a persistent and severe public health issue in many parts of the world. Studies have reported mixed findings on the effects of anaemia during the postpartum period on maternal health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We conducted this systematic review to summarise available evidence to inform public health practitioners on whether 1) anaemia negatively impact maternal health-related quality of life and 2) whether iron supplementation in anaemic women can improve maternal HRQoL during the postpartum period. METHODS: This review's protocol was registered o

Association of contraception use and pregnancy intention with perinatal depression risk among Omani mothers-a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Unplanned pregnancy is significantly associated with an increased risk of perinatal depression (antenatal and postnatal depression), emphasizing its prevalence and its potentially detrimental effects on both maternal and child health. This study aimed to investigate the association of contraception use and pregnancy intention with the risk of perinatal depression among Omani mothers. METHODS: A prospective longitudinal study design was employed to investigate perinatal depression risk in mothers attending antenatal health care services in Oman. Perinatal depression risk was assess

Recognizing, understanding, and treating postpartum thyroiditis.

Postpartum thyroiditis is the most common endocrinologic disorder, with an incidence that varies geographically from 5% to 10%. It has important clinical sequelae including symptoms of hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and depression. Long-term follow-up of women who experience postpartum thyroiditis reveals a high recurrence rate in subsequent pregnancies. Postpartum thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder, and thyroid antibody-positive women in the first trimester have a 33% to 50% chance of developing thyroiditis in the postpartum period. Whether or not to screen for postpartum thyroiditis rem

Marijuana use during and after pregnancy and association of prenatal use on birth outcomes: A population-based study.

BACKGROUND: We sought to describe the correlates of marijuana use during and after pregnancy, and to examine the independent relationship between prenatal marijuana use and infant outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: We used state-specific data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (N = 9013) to describe correlates of self-reported prenatal and postpartum marijuana use. We estimated differences in mean infant birth weight and gestational age among prenatal marijuana users and nonusers, controlling for relevant covariates (i.e., cigarette smoking). RESULTS: Respectively, 4.2% (95% CI: 3.8-4

Predicting Infant Sleep Patterns From Postpartum Maternal Mental Health Measures: Machine Learning Approach.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum maternal mental health (MMH) symptoms, including depression, anxiety, and childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder, are known to influence infant sleep trajectories. While previous research has examined their individual and combined associations, the predictive utility of these MMH symptoms for the early identification of infant sleep problems through machine learning (ML) remains understudied. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine whether postpartum MMH measures can predict infant sleep outcomes during the first year of life. The analysis focused on 2 clinica

Peripartum dissociation, sense of control, postpartum posttraumatic stress disorder and emotional adjustment to motherhood in adult survivors of childhood maltreatment.

Survivors of childhood maltreatment (CM) may experience difficulties in the peripartum period and in adjustment to motherhood. In this study we examined a model wherein CM is associated with maternal self-efficacy and maternal bonding three months postpartum, through mediation of peripartum dissociation and reduced sense of control during childbirth and postpartum-posttraumatic-stress disorder (P-PTSD). Women were recruited in a maternity ward within 48 h of childbirth (T1, N = 440), and contacted three-months postpartum (T2, N = 295). Participants completed self-report questionnaires: peripar

Emotional violence exerted by intimate partners and postnatal depressive symptoms among women in Vietnam: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown a relation between intimate partner violence (IPV) and postpartum depression (PPD). However, these studies have primarily focused on physical and sexual violence as predictors for postpartum depression and little attention has been given to emotional violence (EV), despite emotional violence having been well reported as the most common type of violence experienced by women. This present study aimed to investigate the association between various types of emotional experience during life with present partner and postnatal depressive symptoms among women in

Effects of lifestyle intervention by a nurse-led app on the prevention of symptoms in postpartum women: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of postpartum symptoms such as prolonged lochia, constipation, fatigue, and depression remains high. Providing postpartum lifestyle interventions, including diet and exercise supervision, in clinical practice is challenging. A nurse-led app through diet supervision, exercise supervision and health education is a promising approach to lifestyle intervention. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial evaluated the effects of lifestyle intervention through app on postpartum women from January to November 2024. Postpartum women with aged 18-45 years, experiencing a singl
