The contact urticaria syndrome--an updated review.

The term "the contact urticaria syndrome," proposed in 1975, has been generally accepted and led to proliferation of new examples. This paper summarizes this clinical material and presents a diagnostic and pathogenetic evaluation method. The risks (and minimization, thereof) of systemic skin test-induced reactions are delineated.

Clinical Characteristics and Patch Test Results in 57 Patients with Contact Dermatitis in Southern Taiwan.

Background/Objectives: Patch testing is a valuable clinical tool for identifying the causes of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). This study aimed to identify common allergens in southern Taiwan. Methods: A retrospective review of patch test data from April 2019 to May 2023 was conducted at a tertiary medical center. The European Baseline Series of allergens was utilized to evaluate and identify the causes of dermatitis. The prevalence rates of contact sensitization to each allergen were calculated. Results: A total of 57 patients (mean age 41.8 years) with contact dermatitis who underwent pat

2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate (2-HEMA) sensitization, a global epidemic at its peak in Spain?

BACKGROUND: A global epidemic of allergic contact dermatitis to (meth)acrylates has been described in relation to the widespread use of manicure products. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the frequency of sensitization to 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (2-HEMA) among consecutively patch tested patients with eczema in Spain; the percentage of current relevance; the MOAHLFA index; and, the potential sources of exposure to (meth)acrylates. METHODS: From January 2019 to December 2022, 2-HEMA 2% pet. was prospectively patch tested in 24 REIDAC (Spanish Allergic Contact Dermatitis Registry) centres. RESULTS:

[Allergic contact eczema from epoxy resin].

Epoxy resins are plastics that are widely used as electrical insulation, in coatings, and as adhesives and paints. They have strong sensitizing power and are one of the main causes of allergic contact eczema, both in the workplace and elsewhere. We present the case of a worker at a plastics/chemical plant, who handled aeronautical components in the process of manufacturing fuselage parts. He consulted his physician because of eczematous lesions on his fingers, hands and forearms which had developed over a two-year period and were clearly related to his work. The standard battery of skin tests

Cosmetics and contact dermatitis.

A complete work-up of most patients with cosmetic allergies can be performed satisfactorily in a dermatologist's office without expensive equipment. After taking a complete history and performing a thorough examination, a biopsy is seldom required. Examine all the patient's cosmetics, eliminate the strong irritants, and proceed with product patch testing. Patch testing with the AAD allergen test tray at the same time is frequently helpful. When results are doubtful or do not fit with the information obtained from the history and examination, supplemental provocative use tests often clarify wha
