The effect of immunonutrition in patients with acute pancreatitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The effect of immunonutrition is controversial compared to standard supplementation with respect to the management of patients with acute pancreatitis. METHODS: An online literature search on four databases (PubMed, Cochrane, Embase and Web of Science) was performed to identify all of the randomised controlled trials assessing the effects of enteral or parenteral immunonutrition in acute pancreatitis. A fixed or random effects model was chosen using revman, version 5.3 (https://revman.cochrane.org). The count data were analysed using the risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval

Skin autofluorescence and malnutrition as predictors of mortality in persons receiving dialysis: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Skin autofluorescence (SAF), which is a measure of accumulation of advanced glycation end-products (AGE), and malnutrition are each associated with higher mortality in dialysis populations, although no studies have investigated these potentially related associations together. We simultaneously assessed SAF and malnutrition as risk factors for mortality in persons receiving dialysis. METHODS: SAF was measured in 120 haemodialysis and 31 peritoneal dialysis patients using an AGE Reader (DiagnOptics, Groningen, The Netherlands). Dietary AGE, energy, protein and fat intake, handgrip s

The use of extensively hydrolysed and amino acid feeds beyond cow's milk allergy: a national survey.

BACKGROUND: Extensively hydrolysed formulas (EHFs) and amino acid formulas (AAFs) with proven hypoallergenicity are used for children suffering from cow's milk allergy, when breast milk is not available. However, these feeds are often used in other medical conditions where tolerance and absorption of whole protein is affected, frequently without assessment of efficacy. This practice survey assessed the use of these feeds in paediatric conditions other than cow's milk allergy; aiming to describe the population, growth parameters and micronutrient status. METHODS: Four National Health Service t

Anthropometric and blood pressure changes in patients with or without nutritional counselling during cardiac rehabilitation: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Whether a patient's outcomes are better when receiving nutritional counselling during cardiac rehabilitation (CR) has been scarcely described. We compared changes in weight, waist circumference (WC) and blood pressure (BP) in patients attending CR with and without nutritional counselling. METHODS: A retrospective analytical study was conducted in which two groups of patients who completed a phase II CR (36 sessions) were compared: CONTROL [n = 144, mean (SD) age = 59 (12) years, 17% females], comprising patients without nutritional counselling (attended between 2003 and 2009), and

Potential curing and beneficial effects of Ooitabi (Ficus pumila L.) on hypertension and dyslipidaemia in Okinawa.

BACKGROUND: Over 30% of the population of Okinawa Prefecture have a high body mass index. The incidence of hypertension and dyslipidaemia has also increased in recent years. We found that Ooitabi (Ficus pumila L.), a plant native to Okinawa, was useful for hypertension. During ancient times, the extracts of Ooitabi leaves were used for making Ishimaki tea in some areas of Okinawa Prefecture. The plants in Okinawa are rich in antioxidants, and four flavonoid glycosides, including rutin, have been identified in Ooitabi. METHODS: In the present study, we conducted clinical verification tests on

Diet and sleep health: a scoping review of intervention studies in adults.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has demonstrated an association between dietary intake and sleep health that can influence chronic disease risk factors. A scoping review of research studies investigating dietary intake and sleep was undertaken to determine the extent and scope of research in laboratory-based, free-living and mixed settings. Additionally, this review determines how well subpopulations and geographical locations are represented and the methodologies used to assess outcome measures. METHODS: Five online databases were used to identify papers published between 1970 and 2017. Included

Dietary vitamin A intakes among pregnant women attending antenatal care in health facilities in Dessie Town, North East Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A plays an important role in vision, cellular differentiation, embryonic development, reproduction, growth and the immune system. Women who live in developing countries face a risk of undernutrition during pregnancy as a result of poverty, poor diet quality and quantity, and a high fertility rate. This poor dietary problem could reflect the high risk of vitamin A deficiency in women. The present study aimed to determine the adequacy of vitamin A among pregnant women following antenatal care in health facilities of Dessie Town, Ethiopia, January 2017. METHODS: Health facili

The barriers and enablers to achieving adequate calcium intake in young adults: a qualitative study using focus groups.

BACKGROUND: Despite the established benefits of calcium consumption, many young Australians are not meeting the recommendations for calcium intake. This is concerning because an adequate calcium consumption is important throughout young adulthood to reach peak bone mass and for the prevention of osteoporosis. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the barriers and enablers to consuming calcium-rich foods with young adults. METHODS: Using a semi-structured question guide, five focus group discussions were conducted with 39 participants [mean (SD) age 22.5 (1.8) years]. Participants were
