Ranking fluctuating asymmetry in a dot figure and the significant impact of imagining a face.

Fluctuating asymmetry and averageness is correlated with our perception of beauty in human faces. Yet, whether deviations of centrality in the positioning of the eyes, the nose, and the mouth have different effects on our perception of asymmetry in a holistic human face, is still uncertain. In this study we aimed to test the relative effect of decentralising the horizontal position of three sets of paired dots representing eyes, nostrils, or mouth from the vertical midline of ambiguous dot figures, vaguely resembling a face. The figures were ranked according to perceived asymmetry by human obs

The medial preoptic area is necessary for sexual odor preference, but not sexual solicitation, in female Syrian hamsters.

Precopulatory behaviors that are preferentially directed towards opposite-sex conspecifics are critical for successful reproduction, particularly in species wherein the sexes live in isolation, such as Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus). In females, these behaviors include sexual odor preference and vaginal scent marking. The neural regulation of precopulatory behaviors is thought to involve a network of forebrain areas that includes the medial amygdala (MA), the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), and the medial preoptic area (MPOA). Although MA and BNST are necessary for sexual o

Error processing and response inhibition in excessive computer game players: an event-related potential study.

Excessive computer gaming has recently been proposed as a possible pathological illness. However, research on this topic is still in its infancy and underlying neurobiological mechanisms have not yet been identified. The determination of underlying mechanisms of excessive gaming might be useful for the identification of those at risk, a better understanding of the behavior and the development of interventions. Excessive gaming has been often compared with pathological gambling and substance use disorder. Both disorders are characterized by high levels of impulsivity, which incorporates deficit

Impaired finger dexterity in patients with parkinson's disease correlates with discriminative cutaneous sensory dysfunction.

To study the influence of discriminative cutaneous sensory dysfunction on impaired finger dexterity in Parkinson's disease (PD), we evaluated 48 right-handed PD patients during a practically defined off-medication period and 24 healthy age-matched controls. With visual deprivation, a finger tapping task (FTT) was performed to assess the speed of simple repetitive finger movements and a coin rotation task (CRT) was used to assess finger dexterity. The tasks were performed with the right hand. We measured the somesthetic temporal discrimination threshold (sTDT) in the right index finger. The mea

How do selected arrows guide visuospatial attention? Dissociating symbolic value and spatial proximity.

Previous research on the control of visuospatial attention showed that overlearned symbols like arrows have the potential to induce involuntary shifts of attention. Following work on the role of attentional control settings and of the content of working memory in the involuntary deployment of visuospatial attention, Pratt and Hommel (2003) found that this unintentional orienting by an arrow depended on its top-down selection, contingent on the attentional control settings, that is to say, the target selection cue. However, in this study, each arrow was closer to the location it indicated than

Parietal damage dissociates saccade planning from presaccadic perceptual facilitation.

A well-known theory in the field of attention today is the premotor theory of attention which suggests that the mechanisms involved in eye movements are the same as those for spatial attention shifts. We tested a parietal damaged patient with unilateral optic ataxia and 4 controls on a dual saccade/attentional task and show a dissociation between saccadic eye movements and presaccadic perceptual enhancement at the saccade goal. Remarkably, though the patient was able to make the appropriate saccades to the left, impaired visual field (undistinguishable from saccades to his right, intact visual

Seeing red primes tomato: evidence for comparable priming from colour and colour name primes to semantically related word targets.

There is ample evidence that an independent processing stream exists that subserves the perception and appreciation of colour. Neurophysiological research has identified separate brain mechanisms for the processing of wavelength and colour, and neuropsychological studies have revealed selective colour disorders, such as achromatopsia, colour agnosia, and colour anomia. The aim of the present study is to investigate whether the perception of colour may, despite its independent processing, influence other cognitive functions. Specifically, we investigate the possibility that the perception of a

Odour suppression in binary mixtures.

It has been suggested that odours causing stronger trigeminal activation suppress weaker trigeminal stimuli and that mixed olfactory-trigeminal stimuli suppress odorants that only activate one of these systems. Volunteer normosmic participants (n=20) were exposed to six odorants with varying trigeminal impact to test the hypothesis that more intense "trigeminal" odorants would suppress weaker trigeminal stimuli in binary odour mixtures. It was also hypothesised that stronger trigeminal odorants would dominate six-odour mixtures. The predicted linear pattern of suppression was not seen, with a

The auditory acclimatization effect in sensorineural hearing-impaired listeners: evidence for functional plasticity.

The present study provides new data on perceptual and physiological modifications associated with hearing aid (HA) fitting. Eight sensorineural hearing-impaired (SNHI) listeners participated. They had symmetrical hearing loss and were being fitted with binaural HAs for the first time. Perceptual performances were measured four times during auditory rehabilitation, using an intensity discrimination task and a loudness-scaling task. Pure tones of two different frequencies were used, one well amplified by HAs and the other weakly amplified. Two intensity levels were also tested, one rated 'soft'

A case of amusia caused by the infarction of anterior portion of bilateral temporal lobes.

It remains an unsettled question which brain regions participate in music perception. During singing a familiar song, the retrieval from long-term memory is necessary, but the mechanism of that retrieval is still unclear. We carried out a detailed examination of musical ability in a patient with amusia and control subjects and identified the lesion sites of our patient using MRI. Compared with controls, the patient manifested the following impairments in music perception: (i) the recognition and discrimination of familiar melodies; (ii) the discrimination of unfamiliar phrases; (iii) the discr

Specificity and generalization of visual perceptual learning in humans: an event-related potential study.

To investigate the neural correlates of specificity and generalization of visual perceptual learning, we recorded event-related potentials from human adults when they were trained with a simple visual discrimination task. While reaction times decreased significantly across training sessions, event-related potentials showed larger P2 amplitudes ( approximately 210 ms) over the left occipital/parietal areas and smaller N1 amplitudes ( approximately 140 ms) at the left parietal site with more practice. Similar to reaction times, the training effect on the P2 amplitudes was specific to stimulus or

Impaired conditional discrimination learning in social phobia.

Eyelid conditional discrimination learning (ECDL) is a test of discriminative aversive conditioning. It places minimal demands on motivation and was shown to selectively test temporal lobe function. Twenty-five unmedicated social phobia (SP) patients (mean age 29.5 +/- 7.0 years), diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria, and 25 age- and gender-matched healthy controls (HC, mean age 34.0 +/- 8.6 years) were examined with an ECDL paradigm. In the experiment two differently colored stimuli are randomly presented. Only one of the stimuli (reinforced trial) is followed by an aversive airpuff to the

Allopregnanolone and pentobarbital infused into the nucleus accumbens substitute for the discriminative stimulus effects of ethanol.

BACKGROUND: The discriminative stimulus effects of ethanol are mediated in part by the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA(A)) receptor system. We have previously shown that microinjections of the competitive GABA(A) agonist muscimol in the nucleus accumbens and amygdala fully substitute for the discriminative stimulus effects of systemic ethanol. However, it is not known whether allosteric binding sites on GABA(A) receptors located within specific limbic brain regions contribute to the discriminative stimulus effects of ethanol. METHODS: Male Long-Evans rats were trained to discriminate bet

Visuoperceptual impairment in multiple sclerosis patients diagnosed with neuropsychological tasks.

A comprehensive set of 31 binocular neuropsychological tasks assessing a series of spatial and non-spatial visuoperceptual abilities was used to study visuoperceptual impairment in a representative group of 49 MS-clinic patients exhibiting neither diagnosed ophthalmological afflictions nor major psychiatric diagnoses. Among these patients, true frequency rate of visuoperceptual impairment, i.e. of subjects failing four or more tasks, was estimated at 26%. The pattern of visuoperceptual impairment was non-uniform, non-selective, restricted and idiosyncratic. Only four tasks yielded significant

Influence of feature training on the formation of exemplar-specific representations in children with mental retardation.

Whether exemplar-specific or prototype representations were primarily used by children with mild mental retardation in a categorization task consisting of two groups of make-believe animals whose features were ill-defined was examined. Categorization performance of familiar, prototypic, and novel test phase exemplars indicated that these children were able to acquire and use both types of representations. A feature-labeling training procedure, expected to promote the formation of exemplar-specific representations prior to exemplar classification, was also incorporated within the current study'

The discriminative stimulus properties of the atypical antipsychotic olanzapine in rats.

RATIONALE: Analysis of the preclinical behavioral effects of atypical antipsychotic agents will provide a better understanding of how they differ from typical antipsychotics and aid in the development of future atypical antipsychotic drugs. OBJECTIVES: The present study was designed to provide information about the discriminative stimulus properties of the atypical antipsychotic olanzapine. METHODS: Rats were trained to discriminate the atypical antipsychotic olanzapine (either 0.5 mg/kg OLZ or 0.25 mg/kg OLZ, i.p.) from vehicle in a twolever drug discrimination procedure. Impaired auditory frequency discrimination in dyslexia detected with mismatch evoked potentials.

Deficits in phonological skills appear to be at the heart of reading disability; however, the nature of this impairment is not yet known. The hypothesis that dyslexic subjects are impaired in auditory frequency discrimination was tested by using an attention-independent auditory brain potential, termed mismatch negativity (MMN) while subjects performed a visual distractor task. In separate blocks, MMN responses to graded changes in tone frequency or tone duration were recorded in 10 dyslexic and matched control subjects. MMN potentials to changes in tone frequency but not to changes in tone du

Deficits and recovery of first- and second-order motion perception in patients with unilateral cortical lesions.

Unilateral lesions in the posterior parietal cortex can degrade motion perception in the contralesional visual hemifield. Our aim was to investigate whether deficits caused by cortical lesions may be different for first- and second-order motion perception, and to study the time scale of any potential recovery. In nine patients with circumscribed lesions mainly in the parietal and fronto-parietal cortex, thresholds for direction discrimination were measured for stimuli presented peripherally in their ipsi- and contralesional hemifield. Subjects had to identify the direction of a vertically movi

Enhanced neurobehavioral effects of cocaine with chronic neuroleptic exposure in rats.

Individuals with schizophrenia are often treated with medications that block dopamine (DA) neurotransmission. Chronic administration of many DA antagonists alters dopaminergic function, causing a supersensitivity to DA agonists. Because the DA agonist properties of cocaine seem to be involved in its behavioral effects, chronic DA antagonist treatments may enhance these effects of cocaine. This article presents evidence to support this hypothesis, as well as its implications for treating schizophrenia patients who abuse cocaine and suggestions for future research.

The effects of visual cortex lesions on the perception of rotated shapes.

Monkeys with inferior temporal cortex lesions cannot discriminate between different shapes (e.g., + vs. O) but can discriminate between shapes that differ only in orientation (e.g., 6 vs 9). Lesions of the parietal cortex, on the other hand, impair the discrimination of rotated shapes but spare the ability to discriminate between different shapes. A similar dissociation is found between some visual agnosics who can match but not identify rotated views of objects and other patients who can identify and discriminate objects only if the view is conventional; any change in orientation disrupts per
