Persistence and decontamination of surrogate radioisotopes in a model drinking water distribution system.

Contamination of a model drinking water system with surrogate radioisotopes was examined with respect to persistence on and decontamination of infrastructure surfaces. Cesium and cobalt chloride salts were used as surrogates for cesium-137 and cobalt-60. Studies were conducted in biofilm annular reactors containing heavily corroded iron surfaces formed under shear and constantly submerged in drinking water. Cesium was not detected on the corroded iron surface after equilibration with 10 and 100mgL(-1) solutions of cesium chloride, but cobalt was detected on corroded iron coupons at both initia…

Evaluation of the effect of cola drinks on bone mineral density and associated factors.

The aim of the study was to determine bone mineral density changes caused by consumption of cola drinks and the associated factors. Thirty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups. Groups 1 and 2, consisting of 10 male and 10 female rats, respectively, were provided with as much food, water and cola drinks as they wanted. Groups 3 and 4, consisting of five rats each, received only rat chow and water. The bone mineral density of the rats was measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry at the end of 30 days. The blood values and weights of the animals were also determined. The oesop

Patterns and correlates of drinking in offspring from the San Diego Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: The decision among young people to drink is complex and reflects multiple domains of influence. This paper applies the results from a previous test of an externalizing-based model predicting heavy drinking and alcohol problems in the probands from the San Diego Prospective Study to evaluate how similar characteristics relate to the decision to drink in their offspring. METHODS: Data were generated from multiple sources for 152 offspring with a mean age of 17.2 years. Information on the family histories, personal alcohol and other substance use, socioeconomic stratum, the child's g…

Incorporating social anxiety into a model of college problem drinking: replication and extension.

Although research has found an association between social anxiety and alcohol use in noncollege samples, results have been mixed for college samples. College students face many novel social situations in which they may drink to reduce social anxiety. In the current study, the authors tested a model of college problem drinking, incorporating social anxiety and related psychosocial variables among 228 undergraduate volunteers. According to structural equation modeling (SEM) results, social anxiety was unrelated to alcohol use and was negatively related to drinking consequences. Perceived drinkin…

An application of Stafford and Warr's reconceptualisation of deterrence to a group of recidivist drink drivers.

Recent revisions of deterrence theory have highlighted the powerful effects of personal and vicarious punishment avoidance on criminal activity. The present paper reports on an application of Stafford and Warr's [Stafford, M.C., Warr, M., 1993. A reconceptualization of general and specific deterrence. J. Res. Crime Delinq. 30 (2), 123-135] reconceptualisation of deterrence theory to a group of recidivist drink drivers to explain their self-reported offending behaviours. The analysis indicated that punishment avoidance exerted the greatest influence on self-reported offending behaviours, althou

Effects of aripiprazole on alcohol intake in an animal model of high-alcohol drinking.

AIMS: This study examined the effects of aripiprazole, a novel atypical antipsychotic drug with partial agonist properties at dopamine D2 receptors, on the voluntary limited access alcohol drinking of alcohol-preferring AA (Alko, Alcohol) rats. METHODS: AA rats were taught to drink 10% alcohol in a 4 h limited access paradigm. Effects of acute aripiprazole (0, 0.3, 1.0, and 3.0 mg/kg) on the limited access alcohol drinking were studied. In repeated treatment experiment, aripiprazole (0, 1.0, and 6.0 mg/kg) was administered once daily over five successive days. To reveal any effect by aripipra…

An attempt to estimate the global burden of disease due to fluoride in drinking water.

A study was conducted to examine the feasibility of estimating the global burden of disease due to fluoride in drinking water. Skeletal fluorosis is a serious and debilitating disease which, with the exception of one area in China, is overwhelmingly due to the presence of elevated fluoride levels in drinking water. The global burden of disease due to fluoride in drinking water was estimated by combining exposure-response curves for dental and skeletal fluorosis (derived from published data) with model-derived predicted drinking water fluoride concentrations and an estimate of the percentage po…

Relationship of age of first drink to child behavioral problems and family psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Studies have implicated a wide variety of variables as being associated with an early age of first drink (AFD). AFD in turn has … f strength of family history of AD (or antisocial personality disorder), appears conducive to early drinking. Thus, child and environmental factors are stronger predictors of age of first drink than family history.

[And wine maketh glad the heart of man: is it so?--allergy to alcoholic drinks].

Adverse reactions to alcoholic drinks are common, especially in asthmatic patients. Since these drinks are the end product of a long process consisting of multiple ingredients, many factors may induce such reactions. This is a case study of a woman who has suffered from recurrent episodes of cutaneous eruption and dyspnea. Meticulous inquiry eventually revealed that drinking white wine was responsible for those symptoms. Grapes, barley, various fruits, alcohol, preserving substances like sulfite, biogenic amines like histamine and other ingredients can all be potential triggers of the adverse …

Does an energy drink modify the effects of alcohol in a maximal effort test?

BACKGROUND: There are popular reports on the combined use of alcohol and energy drinks (such as Red Bull and similar beverages, which contain caffeine, taurine, carbohydrates, etc.) to reduce the depressant effects of alcohol on central nervous system, but no controlled studies have been performed. The main purpose of this study was to verify the effects of alcohol, and alcohol combined with energy drink, on the performance of volunteers in a maximal effort test (cycle ergometer) and also on physiological indicators (oxygen uptake, ventilatory threshold, respiratory exchange rate, heart rate,

[Hormonal and metabolic effects of drinking mineral water and phytoaeronisation in experimental prostatitis].

Prostatitis modelled in 53 Wistar male rats (300-350 body mass) 7 days after its induction was treated with mineral water "Essentuki N 17" (MW) which was taken in a dose 1.5-2 ml per 100 g body mass for 23-24 days. In addition, some animals received phytoaeroionisation (PAI) with solution of essential oils of mint, sage and lavender. Prostatitis is associated with disorders in prostatic tissue, levels of sex hormones (testosterone, prolactin, FSH, LH), a rise in total cholesterol, glucose. Watering of animals with MW and PAI raised blood insulin, hydrocortisone and testosterone, normalized blo

Pressor effect of water drinking in tetraplegic patients may be a spinal reflex.

Water drinking elicits a profound sympathetically mediated pressor response in patients with autonomic failure. To further elucidate the mechanism of the response, we assessed the acute effect of drinking water on supine blood pressure and heart rate in 13 tetraplegic patients (12 men, 1 woman; 39+/-4 years of age; body mass index, 25+/-1 kg/m2) with complete spinal cord injury (C2 to C7). Heart rate and finger blood pressure were recorded continuously. Brachial blood pressure was measured every 5 minutes. Baroreflex sensitivity was assessed by the sequence method. Stroke volume was calculated…

Animal models of motivation for drinking in rodents with a focus on opioid receptor neuropharmacology.

Ethanol, like other drugs of abuse, has motivating properties that can be developed as animal models of self-administration. A major strength of the operant approach where an animal must work to obtain ethanol is that it reduces confounds due to palatability and controls for nonspecific malaise-inducing effects. In the domain of opioid peptide systems, limited access paradigms have good predictive validity. In addition, animal models of excessive drinking-either environmentally or genetically induced-also appear sensitive to blockade or inactivation of opioid peptide receptors. Ethanol availab…

The lack of a specific association between arsenic in drinking water and hepatocellular carcinoma.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Liver cancers, particularly angiosarcomas, among patients with arsenic intoxication have been reported for more than half a century. Studies on cancers of urinary system and skin showed the carcinogenic effect of arsenic was cell-type specific. To evaluate whether this is also true for liver cancers, a study was conducted in 243 townships in Taiwan. METHODS: Cases of liver cancer were identified through the National Cancer Registry Program. The distribution of major cell-types was compared between an endemic area of arsenic intoxication, including 5 of the 243 townships, and

[Disappearance of Mallory bodies in the liver of autopsy cases with a history of heavy drinking].

Mallory bodies, the intra-cytoplasmic inclusions in hepatocytes, are thought to be a pathognomonic feature of alcoholic liver disease, particularly of alcoholic hepatitis. The presence of Mallory bodies is considered as a reflection of serious illness in alcoholic liver disease. Mallory bodies are thought to disappear relatively rapidly with the use of therapeutic agents after giving up alcohol drinking. However, histological vicissitudes of Mallory bodies have not been studied extensively. In the present study, 19 autopsied cases with a history of heavy drinking were clinicopathologically eva…
