[Young and single in the 1980s and 1990s].

"In the Netherlands increasing numbers of young people who leave their parents' home choose to live alone. This behavioural change dates back to the 60s....[and] is based on general social changes which are not restricted to the Netherlands.... Based on the Netherlands Fertility Survey '88...[a model is developed that] indicates that emancipation-indicators strongly affect the choice of young women to live alone. These are: participation in education, educational attainment and participation in the labour market. The number of young women living alone in the year 2000 has been calculated on th

Prevalence and covariates of problematic gambling among a US military cohort.

The availability of and participation in gambling has increased substantially the past several decades, however studies of military members' gambling behaviors are limited. The present study aimed to investigate potential problematic gambling and its association with demographics and behavioral characteristics in a US military cohort. We analyzed cohort data from a telephone survey during 2015-2016 of 1553 Ohio Army National Guard members. We assessed potential problematic gambling by using the 3-item National Opinion Research Center Diagnostic Screen-Loss of Control, Lying, and Preoccupation

Youth unemployment and economic recession in Spain: influence on health and lifestyles in young people (16-24 years old).

OBJECTIVES: To explore health status and lifestyles in young Spanish people in 2006 and 2012, the changes between these 2 years and the influence of employment status on health and lifestyles in this period. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of the Spanish National Health Surveys 2006 and 2011/12 in people 16-24 years old (3701). Regression analyses for pooled cross-sectional data were developed. Employment status was considered as explanatory variable of health (self-rated health, diagnosed morbidity and mental disorders) and lifestyles (overweight, tobacco and alcohol consumption). RESULTS

Integrating social determinants of health and genetic risk in disease risk models.

Complex diseases are shaped by heritable factors and non-genetic environmental, behavioral, and social determinants of health, but these are rarely modeled together. The growing availability of large-scale, multimodal biobanks creates new opportunities to integrate diverse data types into more accurate disease risk models. Here, we apply multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) to over 100 environmental, behavioral, and social variables from the All of Us biobank (n = 413,457 individuals) to generate low-dimensional embeddings that quantify non-genetic risk for six common chronic conditions: ast

Tissue and Sex-Specific Transcriptomic Signatures Underlying Aggression behavior of Chinese Mitten Crab (Eriocheir sinensis).

Aggressive behavior is a critical constraint on sustainable crustacean aquaculture, causing cannibalism and yield loss. However, in the economically important Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis), the molecular mechanisms underlying aggression responsiveness, particularly sex-specific regulation, remain poorly understood. Here, we used a standardized behavioral assay to quantify reactive aggression across three developmental stages and classified the quantified crabs into high-, moderate-, and low-aggression groups. Biochemical and transcriptomic profiling of the thoracic ganglion and the

The Glutamatergic System Regulates Feather Pecking Behaviors in Laying Hens Through the Gut-Brain Axis.

Feather pecking (FP) is a significant welfare and economic problem in laying hen husbandry. While there is growing evidence that the glutamatergic system plays a crucial role in regulating FP behavior, the biological mechanisms remain unclear, largely due to the limited uptake of peripheral glutamate across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Here, we applied a multi-omics approach combined with physiology assays to answer this question from the perspective of the gut-brain axis. A total of 108 hens were randomly assigned to two groups (treatment and control) with six replicates each, and the treat

Cognitive function and behavioral problems in children born to mothers with preeclampsia: an Indian study.

Studies from high-income countries report associations of preeclampsia (PE) with reduced cognitive function and adverse behavioural outcomes in children. We examined these associations in Indian children aged 5-7 years. Children of mothers with PE (n=74) and without PE (non-PE; n=234) were recruited at delivery at Bharati Hospital, Pune, India. The cognitive performance was assessed using 3 core tests from the Kaufman Assessment Battery and additional tests including Verbal fluency, Kohs block design, and Coding A (from Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children). The parent-reported Strengths a

Digital Manipulation of Images of Models' Appearance in Advertising: Strategies for Action Through Law and Corporate Social Responsibility Incentives to Protect Public Health.

CONTEXT: Widespread digital retouching of advertising imagery in the fashion, beauty, and other consumer industries promotes unrealistic beauty standards that have harmful effects on public health. In particular, exposure to misleading beauty imagery is linked with greater body dissatisfaction, worse mood, poorer self-esteem, and increased risk for disordered eating behaviors. Moreover, given the social, psychological, medical, and economic burden of eating disorders, there is an urgent need to address environmental risk factors and to scale up prevention efforts by increasing the regulation o

The Effectiveness of Noninvasive Interventions for Temporomandibular Disorders: A Systematic Review by the Ontario Protocol for Traffic Injury Management (OPTIMa) Collaboration.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of noninvasive interventions for temporomandibular disorders (TMD). METHODS: We systematically searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Central register from 1990 to 2014 for effectiveness studies and the Cochrane Health Technology Assessment Database, EconLit, NHS Economic Evaluation Database, and Tufts Medical Center Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Register from 1990 to 2014 for cost-effectiveness studies. Random pairs of independent reviewers critically appraised eligible studies using the Scottish Intercollegiate

Being Small for Gestational Age: Does it Matter for the Neurodevelopment of Premature Infants? A Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Whether being small for gestational age (SGA) increases the risk of adverse neurodevelopmental outcome in premature infants remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: to study the impact of SGA (birthweight < percentile 10) on cognition, behavior, neurodevelopmental impairment and use of therapy at 5 years old. METHODS: This population-based prospective cohort included infants born before 32 weeks of gestation. Cognition was evaluated with the K-ABC, and behavior with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Primary outcomes were cognitive and behavioral scores, as well as neur

Sex addiction and gambling disorder: similarities and differences.

OBJECTIVE: Recently, the DSM-5 has developed a new diagnostic category named "Substance-related and Addictive Disorders". This category includes gambling disorder (GD) as the sole behavioral addiction, but does not include sex addiction (SA). The aim of this study is to investigate whether SA should be classified more closely to other behavioral addictions, via a comparison of the personality characteristics and comorbid psychopathology of individuals with SA with those of individuals with GD, which comes under the category of addiction and related disorders. METHOD: The sample included 59 pa
