BACKGROUND: Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by localized or widespread absence of skin at birth, mainly affecting the scalp. Most information about ACC exists as individual case reports and medium-sized studies.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the epidemiology of ACC, using data from a large European network of population-based registries for congenital anomalies (EUROCAT).
METHODS: Twenty-eight EUROCAT population-based registries in 16 European countries were involved. Poisson regression models were exploited to estimate the overall and l

BACKGROUND: Aplasia cutis congenita is regarded as congenital focal absence of skin in the newborn, and occurrence of more than three similar skin defects is rare. The etiology is thought to be multifactorial, and precise etiopathogenesis is unknown.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 13-day-old newborn Sri Lankan Tamil girl was referred to the dermatologic clinic with multiple skin defects at birth. There were six lesions on the body, and two of them had healed during intrauterine period, leaving scars. This was a second twin of her pregnancy. Her first twin fetus had demised before 19 weeks of pregnancy

A female neonate presented with a pedunculated left lateral epibulbar mass protruding through the eyelids that originated from the temporal cornea and superolateral bulbar and palpebral conjunctiva. She had a cleft in the ipsilateral central upper eyelid with horizontal kink of the tarsus lateral to the cleft and focal patches of alopecia on the scalp. Histopathology of the epibulbar mass revealed conjunctival epithelium with underlying connective tissue, cartilage, bone, adipose, and lacrimal gland consistent with epibulbar dermoid. Genetic testing of the surgical specimen was positive for a

Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC; MIM 107600) is a congenital skin disorder that manifests as localized absence of skin. Here we report a case of familial ACC and mega-cisterna magna. A female neonate was born with skin defects on the scalp. Brain magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated retrocerebellar space widening suggesting mega-cisterna magna. Her father also had a skin defect on the scalp at birth, and brain computed tomography of the father showed a cystic lesion over the right occipital lobe, similar to the patient's brain imaging. Karyotype 46,XX, t(6;18)(q23.2;q11.2) was identified on G-

Adams-Oliver syndrome (AOS) is a rare condition defined by combination of cutis aplasia and transverse limb abnormalities. Some authors have described a possible association between this syndrome and portal hypertension (PH) due to hepatoportal sclerosis (HPS). We present a boy with AOS who developed a progressive splenomegaly and hypersplenism at the age of 2 months, and was admitted for acute gastrointestinal bleeding (GI) at the age of 9 months. Subsequently, we documented an extrahepatic portal vein obstruction and esophageal varices. After several episodes of cataclysmic upper GI bleeding

Polyglandular autoimmune syndrome type I is a rare disorder characterized by mucocutaneous candidiasis (MC), hypoparathyroidism (HP) and adrenal insufficiency , requiring regular follow up as the components of the syndrome appear at different age groups. Tooth and nail syndrome, an autosomal dominant condition, is characterized by hypodontia and nail dysplasia. Mandibular incisors, second molars and maxillary canines are the most frequently missing teeth. Tooth shape may vary and conical and narrow crowns are common. Nail dysplasia affects fingernails and toenails and is often more severe in childhood. Nails may be spoon-shaped, ridged, slow growing and easily broken. The clinical and radiographic features of a father and son presenting with this rare condition are described.

A 17 year and 10 month old boy with Johanson-Blizzard syndrome is presented as a case report for the first time. Diagnosis has been established on the basis of craniofacial abnormalities: microcephalia, parietal skin and bone defects, sparse hair with frontal up sweep, alae nasi hypoplasia, irregular dentition and nasolacrimal fistula, with mental insufficiency, partial exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and low birth-weight and length, hypotonia and failure to thrive in infancy. Congenital cataract and hiatus sacralis apertus are additional signs that have never been described in the literatur
