CONCLUSION: To achieve good facial reanimation in cases with facial paralysis resulting from temporal bone fractures, the ideal timing for surgical intervention is at least within 1 month of injury and an appropriate surgical approach should be selected depending on the site of facial nerve injury.
OBJECTIVE: This paper aimed to address the ideal time for surgical intervention and the appropriate surgical approach for patients with facial paralysis resulting from temporal bone fractures.
METHODS: We retrospectively investigated 60 patients with facial paralysis due to temporal bone fractures

Traumatic brain injury affects 69 million people annually, with skull base fractures causing devastating facial nerve palsy. Despite representing only 4% of cases, these injuries result in severe functional and psychosocial complications including hearing loss and cranial nerve dysfunction, presenting significant reconstructive challenges. This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines and examined facial reanimation surgery outcomes in skull base fracture patients through comprehensive database searches and quality appraisal. Study quality was assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) c

The most common mechanism of post-traumatic facial nerve palsy are road accidents and falls. Treatment schemes as well as proper timing of surgery are still controversial.

Aim: The aim of the study was the evaluation of the effects of surgical treatment in patients with post-traumatic facial nerve palsy. Treatment results were correlated with epidemiological factors, mechanism of injury, level of nerve damage, time of surgery and its extent.

Material and methods: 9 patients with facial nerve palsy after head trauma were analyzed. In all patients comp

Irreversible facial palsy, generally post-traumatic or postsurgical, can have devastating consequences for the patient from a functional, aesthetic, and psychological point of view. Among all of the reconstructive techniques, the hemihypoglossal-facial nerve transfer, which avoids the complete section of the hypoglossal nerve, is preferred by senior authors because of its excellent results and very low morbidity.1-5 This technique can be carried out in any neurosurgical center because it requires only basic instruments of microsurgery and a high-speed drill. However, detailed knowledge of the

The author describes a new method of treatment of facial nerve palsy, that is facio-facial anastomosis. The procedure includes a microsurgical anastomosis of the peripheral branches of the healthy facial nerve with the corresponding peripheral parts of the frontotemporal, zygomatic, buccal and mandibular branches of the paralyzed nerve. The early results demonstrate a good effect of the method.

Clinicians require a reliable and valid method of evaluating facial function after facial nerve injury. This tool should be clinically relevant and easy to administer, provide a quantitative score for reporting purposes, and be sensitive enough to detect clinically important change over time or with treatment. The proposed facial grading system has all essential information, including precise definitions for each item, presented on one page. The facial grading system is based on the evaluation of resting symmetry, degree of voluntary excursion of facial muscles, and degree of synkinesis associ

Facial injuries are common during workplace accidents. These incidents are also associated with an increase in both mortality and morbidity rates. The following case describes a 40-year-old white Hispanic patient with paroxysmal facial pain on the right side, one year in duration. The patient reported facial trauma as a result of a direct fall thought to be related to his pain complaints five months prior to arriving at the New Jersey Dental School emergency unit. The facial pain was progressively worsening ever since the accident. Upon arrival at the emergency unit, a comprehensive intraoral …

INTRODUCTION: In the etiology of facial nerve palsy, trauma is the most important. Our aim was to present our experience gained by evaluating the surgical approaches we have used in extratemporal and intratemporal facial nerve injuries and their long-term results, also to contribute to the consensus that will be formed on this subject.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirteen patients among 24 patients who underwent surgery with a diagnosis of traumatic facial paralysis were evaluated in this study. The clinical response of these patients to treatment was examined by classifying them according to the

BACKGROUND: The head and neck regions are frequent sites of burns, but few studies have analysed and reported the epidemiology of facial burns. As the face is the centre of one's identity and persona, facial injuries often result in physical and psychological morbidity. The aim of this article is to describe the epidemiology and outcome of facial burns in China and to suggest future preventive strategies.
METHODS: This retrospective analysis included all patients with facial burns in a database at eight institutions from 2011-2015. The data collected included sex, age, month distribution, aet…

The facial nerve in humans is often prone to injuries requiring surgical intervention. In the best case, nerve reconstruction is achieved by a facial-facial anastomosis (FFA), i.e. suture of the proximal and distal stumps of the severed facial nerve. Although a method of choice, FFA rarely leads to a satisfactory functional recovery. We have recently devised and validated, in an established experimental paradigm in rats, a novel strategy to improve the outcome of FFA by daily manual stimulation (MS) of facial muscles. This treatment results in full recovery of facial movements (whisking) and i

Peripheral nerve injuries impair the patient's functional capacity, including those occurring in the facial nerve, which require effective medical treatment. Thus, we investigated the use of heterologous fibrin biopolymer (HFB) in the repair of the buccal branch of the facial nerve (BBFN) associated with photobiomodulation (PBM), using a low-level laser (LLLT), analyzing the effects on axons, muscles facials, and functional recovery. This experimental study used twenty-one rats randomly divided into three groups of seven animals, using the BBFN bilaterally (the left nerve was used for LLLT): C

IMPORTANCE: Facial vascular anomalies are surgical challenges due to their vascularity and facial nerve distortion. To assist facial vascular anomaly surgical treatment, presurgical percutaneous facial nerve stimulation and recording of compound motor action potentials can be used to map the facial nerve branches. During surgery, the nerve map and continuous intraoperative motor end plate potential monitoring can be used to reduce nerve injury.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate if preoperative facial nerve mapping (FNM) is associated with intraoperative facial nerve injury risk and safe surgical appr

Salivary gland tumors represent 3-10% of all head and neck neoplasms. Most of the tumours are benign with parotid gland being most commonly affected. Surgical intervention in the form of parotidectomy forms the mainstay of treatment. Among the various postoperative complications that may occur after parotidectomy, facial nerve weakness is the most dreaded one for both the surgeon as well as the patient. In the literature, the incidence of transient facial weakness after parotid surgery ranges from 10 to 68%, and long-term dysfunction ranges from 0 to 19%. Apart from injury mechanisms such as n

Facial injuries caused by motorcycle accidents represent a challenge for reconstructions. Currently, the most indicated treatment for facial fractures is anatomical reduction and internal fixation, however, this procedure is not exempt from complications, such as infection and exposure of osteosynthesis material, thus requiring a new surgical procedure and repair. In this study, the authors describe a case of a 60-year-old woman who was the victim of a motorcycle accident and developed exposure of osteosynthesis material on the nasal dorsum after treatment of facial fractures. The patient unde…
