Brain responses to the vicarious facilitation of pain by facial expressions of pain and fear.

Observing pain in others facilitates self-pain in the observer. Vicarious pain facilitation mechanisms are poorly understood. We scanned 21 subjects while they observed pain, fear and neutral dynamic facial expressions. In 33% of the trials, a noxious electrical stimulus was delivered. The nociceptive flexion reflex (NFR) and pain ratings were recorded. Both pain and fear expressions increased self-pain ratings (fear > pain) and the NFR amplitude. Enhanced response to self-pain following pain and fear observation involves brain regions including the insula (INS) (pain > fear in anterior part),…

The Development and Initial Validation of Items to Assess Parent Fear of Nighttime Hypoglycemia.

OBJECTIVE: Parents of youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are fearful their children will experience nighttime hypoglycemia. Currently, the Hypoglycemia Fear Survey for Parents (HFS-P) lacks items that specifically assess parents' nighttime fear. This study aimed to fill this gap by rigorously identifying new items to specifically assess parent fear of nighttime hypoglycemia and then examine the psychometric properties of the revised Hypoglycemia Fear Survey for Parents including Nighttime Fear (HFS-P-NF). METHODS: For Phase 1, we recruited 10 pediatric diabetes providers and 15 parents/caregive…

The Role of Serotonin in Fear Learning and Memory: A Systematic Review of Human Studies.

Fear is characterized by distinct behavioral and physiological responses that are essential for the survival of the human species. Fear conditioning (FC) serves as a valuable model for studying the acquisition, extinction, and expression of fear. The serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) system is known to play a significant role in emotional and motivational aspects of human behavior, including fear learning and expression. Accumulating evidence from both animal and human studies suggests that brain regions involved in FC, such as the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex, possess a hi…

The Neurotransmission Basis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders by the Fear Conditioning Paradigm.

Fear conditioning constitutes the best and most reproducible paradigm to study the neurobiological mechanisms underlying emotions. On the other hand, studies on the synaptic plasticity phenomena underlying fear conditioning present neural circuits enforcing this learning pattern related to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Notably, in both humans and the rodent model, fear conditioning and context rely on dependent neurocircuitry in the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, cingulate gyrus, and hippocampus. In this review, an overview of the role that classical neurotransmitters play in the con…

Prevalence and correlates of fear of recurrence among oral and oropharyngeal cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: Fear of recurrence (FoR) is a prevalent and difficult experience among cancer patients. Most research has focused on FoR among breast cancer patients, with less attention paid to characterizing levels and correlates of FoR among oral and oropharyngeal cancer survivors. The purpose was to characterize FoR with a measure assessing both global fears and the nature of specific worries as well as evaluate the role of sociodemographic and clinical factors, survivorship care transition practices, lifestyle factors, and depressive symptoms in FoR. METHODS: Three hundred eighty-nine oral and …

Infant fearful distress, parent intrusiveness, and adversity in families experiencing homelessness.

Infants experiencing homelessness face risk for developing mental health problems in the future. Parents residing in shelters experience adv … luate associations among parents' history of adversity, intrusive parenting behaviors, and infants' fearful distress. Observed parent intrusiveness during a free play interaction was significantly associated with infant fearfulness observed in a separate behavioral task during which infants viewed a series of masks. Furthermore, there was a moderating …

Morphologic alterations of the fear circuitry: the role of sex hormones and oral contraceptives.

BACKGROUND: Endogenous sex hormones and oral contraceptives (OCs) have been shown to influence key regions implicated in fear processing. While OC use has been found to impact brain morphology, methodological challenges remain to be addressed, such as avoiding selection bias between OC users and non-users, as well as examining potential lasting effects of OC intake. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the current and lasting effects of OC use, as well as the interplay between the current hormonal milieu and history of hormonal contraception use on structural correlates of the fear circuitry. We also e…

Child abuse and wellbeing: Examining the roles of self-compassion and fear of self.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood abuse is linked to poorer well-being, yet some survivors show no prolonged effect, suggesting multifinality. Men and women also differ in the experience and sequelae of abuse supporting gender-specific analyses. To assist in circumventing poor outcomes associated with child abuse, this study examined fear of self (FoS) and self-compassion (SC) as risk and protective factors between child abuse and well-being. METHOD: Australian women (N = 1302, Mage = 47.28 [13.63]) completed an online assessment of childhood abuse, psychological distress, perceived quality of life, SC…

Police in the rearview mirror: Social marginalization, trauma, and fear of being killed.

An online sample of 528 people was asked to respond to a hypothetical scenario: If a police car came up right behind you with its lights flashing, how much would you worry that you would be killed? Participants also reported on whether they experienced aggressive behavior by police in the past (provoked or otherwise) and, if so, completed a measure of associated posttraumatic stress. At least some fear of being killed by police (FKP) in the rearview mirror scenario was reported by the majority (56%) of Black participants, 39% of those self-describing as "other or mixed" race, and 31% of Hispan…

The impact of fear and psychopathological symptoms on neural responses to naturalistic stimuli in adolescents.

The presentation of real-world images can swiftly engage processing mechanisms within specific brain regions and neural pathways. In this study, we explore the effects of fear and psychopathological symptoms on neural processing of realistic stimuli during a free viewing naturalistic task in a sample of adolescents (11-16y). Thirty-one participants performed an experimental task consisting of the visualization of animal pictures according to three conditions - Snakes, Spiders, and Dogs - during EEG recordings. Dimensions of fear and psychopathological symptoms were previously assessed through …

The role of the cannabinoid system in fear memory and extinction in male and female mice.

The prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is higher in women than in men. Among both humans and mice, females exhibit higher resistance to fear extinction than males, suggesting that differences between sexes in fear-extinction processes are involved in the pathophysiology of such fear-related diseases. Sex differences in molecular mechanisms underlying fear memory and extinction are unclear. The cannabinoid (CB) system is well known to be involved in fear memory and extinction, but this involvement is based mainly on experiments using male rodents. It is not known whether there …

Intact prioritization of fearful faces during continuous flash suppression in psychopathy.

Affective state recognition and in particular the identification of fear is known to be impaired in psychopathy. It is unclear, however, whether this reflects a deficit in basic perception ('fear blindness') or a deficit in later cognitive processing. To test for a perceptual deficit, 63 male incarcerated offenders, assessed with the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R), detected fearful, neutral, and happy facial expressions rendered invisible through continuous flash suppression (CFS). Fearful faces were detected faster than neutral and happy faces. There was no reduction of the fear a…

The GR-FKBP51 interaction modulates fear memory but not spatial or recognition memory.

The glucocorticoid receptor (GR) forms a protein complex with FKBP51 that is increased in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and by fear conditioned learning. Disrupting the GR-FKBP51 complex with a synthetic peptide can block the storage or retrieval of fear conditioned memories, which could be a novel approach to the alleviate fear associated memory in PTSD. However, a potential unacceptable side effect could be the impairment of other types of memory. Thus, we investigated the effect of disrupting the GR-FKBP51 complex on recognition memory using the novel object and displaced object rec…

Lose the fear and boost the everyday memory through memory destabilisation and reconsolidation.

This review starts with a brief description of key findings from Nader et al. (2000) which stimulate vibrant research of memory reconsolidat … along' reconsolidation to boost memory persistence. This review primarily focuses on evidence from fear conditioning paradigms, as interfering reconsolidation of fear memory paves ways for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Hippocampal-dependent spatial memories and reconsolidation are then discussed, as this approach provides crucial imp …

Why fear the coming of Winter in Game Of Thrones? The hypovitaminosis D hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: The Game of Thrones fiction is particularly marked by an alarmist maxim, "Winter is coming", which highlights the fear of Westeros inhabitants as Winter approaches. The threat is such that Winter has been given the face of the Night King, whose progress threatens all life north of Westeros. The objective of this narrative review was to elucidate why the coming of Winter was so threatening, particularly by exploring the hypovitaminosis D hypothesis. METHODS: Three sources of information were consulted in April-June 2019, including PubMed, the fantasy novels A Song of Ice and Fire b…

Residents' Location-Based Fear of Theft and Their Impact Factors in Guangzhou, China.

While the fear of theft is common and is known to lead to lower satisfaction with life and subjective well-being, current literature regards the fear of theft as a stable psychological state and ignores discrepancies based on location and their influencing factors. To fill these gaps, we selected 74 typical communities and collected 1568 questionnaires throughout Guangzhou. The results show that: (1) the respondents demonstrated significant location-based differences in their fear of theft. Locations including a coach station, a railway station, a bus station, a subway station and a wholesale …

What is behind the fear of cancer during menopausal hormone therapy in China?

PURPOSE: The application of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) is generally restricted most likely due to limited prescriptions by doctors. Fear of cancer risk may be a critical factor. We investigated the views of Chinese obstetricians and gynecologists on the relationship between hormone therapy and cancer risk. METHODS: A self-administered web-based nationwide cross-sectional questionnaire. RESULTS: In total, 5243 medical workers responded to the questionnaire (response rate 94.5%); 4995 were certified obstetricians and gynecologists. Most were aged 36-55 years (70.9%), had > 10 years of wo…

Impact of stress resilience and susceptibility on fear learning, anxiety, and alcohol intake.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop after exposure to traumatic events and severely impacts the quality of life. PTSD is frequently comorbid with substance use disorders, with alcoholism being particularly common. However, not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD and the factors that render individuals susceptible or resilient to the effects of stress are unknown although gender appears to play an important role. Rodent models of stress exposure such as stress-enhanced fear learning (SEFL) recapitulate some aspects of PTSD symptomology, making them an invaluable tool for…
