Efficacy of Active Ingredients From the EPA 25(B) List in Reducing Attraction of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) to Humans.

Mosquitoes of the Aedes genus are vectors for dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever viruses. Mosquito repellents are an effective way to prevent mosquito bites and reduce the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. In the early 90s, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published a list of active ingredients that pose minimum risk to human health that can be used as pesticides or repellents without passing the EPA registration process. The present study examined the efficacy of 21 of the active ingredients listed by the EPA 25 (B) exempt list and five commercially available sprays th

Anosmia impairs homing orientation but not foraging behaviour in free-ranging shearwaters.

Shearwaters deprived of their olfactory sense before being displaced to distant sites have impaired homing ability but it is unknown what the role of olfaction is when birds navigate freely without their sense of smell. Furthermore, treatments used to induce anosmia and to disrupt magneto-reception in displacement experiments might influence non-specific factors not directly related to navigation and, as a consequence, the results of displacement experiments can have multiple interpretations. To address this, we GPS-tracked the free-ranging foraging trips of incubating Scopoli's shearwaters wi

Hydrodynamic Constraints of Suction Feeding in Low Reynolds Numbers, and the Critical Period of Larval Fishes.

Larval fishes suffer prodigious mortality rates, eliminating 99% of the cohort within a few days after their first feeding. Hjort (1914) famously attributed this "critical period" of low survival to larval inability to obtain sufficient food. We discuss recent experimental and modeling work, suggesting that the viscous hydrodynamic regime have marked effects on the mechanism of suction feeding in larval fish. As larvae grow, the size of the gape and associated volume of the mouth increase. At the same time, larvae swim faster and can generate faster suction flows, thus transiting to a hydrodyn

Surface feeding and aggressive behaviour of diploid and triploid brown trout Salmo trutta during allopatric pair-wise matchings.

Diploid and triploid brown trout Salmo trutta were acclimated for 6 weeks on two feeding regimes (floating and sinking). Thereafter, aggression and surface feeding response were compared between pairs of all diploid, all triploid and diploid and triploid S. trutta in an experimental stream. In each pair-wise matching, fish of similar size were placed in allopatry and rank was determined by the total number of aggressive interactions recorded. Dominant individuals initiated more aggression than subordinates, spent more time defending a territory and positioned themselves closer to the surface f

Effect of obesity treatments on eating behavior: psychosocial interventions versus surgical interventions. A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: (1) To use available research data to estimate the amount of change in eating behavior following obesity treatment; (2) To examine how this change relates to the amount of change in weight loss after treatment and at follow up. A meta-analysis was conducted in September 2009. METHODS: Studies were identified through a computer search of articles in the PubMed and PsychInfo databases. Key terms entered were obesity, treatment, and eating behavior. Effect sizes (Glass d) were calculated according to published procedures. RESULTS: Eighteen studies met the inclusion and exclusion crit

Jaw and hyolingual movements during prey transport in varanid lizards: effects of prey type.

The ability to modulate feeding kinematics in response to prey items with different functional properties is likely a prerequisite for most organisms that feed on a variety of food items. Variation in prey properties is expected to reveal variation in feeding function and the functional role of the different phases in a transport cycle. Here we describe the kinematics of prey transport of two varanid species, Varanus niloticus and Varanus ornatus. These species were selected for analysis because of their highly specialised hyolingual system and food transport mechanism (inertial food transport

Hyperkalemia and hyperdopaminemia induced by an obsessive eating of banana in an anorexia nervosa adolescent.

Banana is known as a dopamine-rich and potassium-rich food, however no previous data regarding biochemical or psychological alteration induced by excess intake of banana has been reported. We have experienced an adolescent female case of Anorexia nervosa (AN) who denied eating anything but maximum 20 bananas and less than 500 ml mineral water per day for more than two years. During the period of massive banana eating habit, she showed increase of serum potassium (from 4.7 mEq/l to 6.1 mEq/l) and whole blood dopamine (from 11 ng/ml to 210 ng/ml; normal range 0.5-6.2 ng/ml), and obvious dysthymi

Mealworm feeders as environmental enrichment for common marmosets.

The impact of a foraging enrichment device, the "mealworm feeder," on the behavior of the common marmoset was examined. In 3-h weekly exposures to the wormfeeder device, behavioral observations were conducted to compare the rates of feeder use, use of other enrichment devices, stereotyped behavior, and inactivity, to those of control sessions in which the enrichment device was not provided. Significantly decreased rates of pacing and time spent sitting still were observed in association with placement of the mealworm feeder. Feeder use declined over a period of 3 h, even if the feeders' conten

[Case report: anorexia nervosa in a 10-year-old boy].

A 10-year-old boy was admitted to the Children's Hospital with a 7-month history of disturbed eating behavior and a recent rapid weight loss: During the 24-day hospital stay the boy displayed a characteristic anorectic eating pattern, hyperactivity, anxiety, depression and compulsive behavior. Discharge followed a 4-kg weight gain. During the subsequent 12 months of outpatient care weight gain and eating behavior normalized. The boy's premorbid personality was described as compulsive and difficult. Although his intelligence was above average the boy had spelling problems and inadequate verbal

[Phenomenology of tics: psychological and psychiatric approach].

The association of involuntary motor disturbances and psychic symptoms is a salient feature of Gilles de la Tourette's disease. The frequency of the association is supported by recent epidemiological data. However, a clear distinction must be made between psychic symptoms dependent of the pathological process and psychological reactions to the disease. The link between motor and psychic symptoms raises a crucial and yet controversial question. Etiology, and particularly the role of psychological and social factors, is discussed. But mechanisms must be studied independently. Is there a causal r

Chemical Ecology and Management of Dengue Vectors.

Dengue, caused by the dengue virus, is the most widespread arboviral infectious disease of public health significance globally. This review explores the communicative function of olfactory cues that mediate host-seeking, egg-laying, plant-feeding, and mating behaviors in Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, two mosquito vectors that drive dengue virus transmission. Aedes aegypti has adapted to live in close association with humans, preferentially feeding on them and laying eggs in human-fabricated water containers and natural habitats. In contrast, Ae. albopictus is considered opportunistic in

Sarcoptic mange in cattle: Effects of treatment with eprinomectin topical solution on performance, behavior changes, and adrenal and systemic responses to ACTH challenge.

Bovine sarcoptic mange can cause significant pruritus and skin disease which compromise the health and welfare of the animals, impairs animal productivity and is furthermore of zoonotic concern. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of efficacious treatment of sarcoptic mange on performance and on animal welfare using behavioral indicators and adrenal reactivity testing. Sixteen young cattle with induced sarcoptic mange were allocated by restricted randomization based on body weight to an untreated group (control) or a treated group (eprinomectin 5 mg/mL topical solution [EPRINEX® P

Arginine Vasotocin and Neuropeptide Y Vary with Seasonal Life-History Transitions in Garter Snakes.

Transitions between life-history stages are often accompanied by dramatic behavioral switches that result from a shift in motivation to pursue one resource over another. While the neuroendocrine mechanisms that regulate such behavioral transitions are poorly understood, arginine vasotocin (AVT) and neuropeptide Y (NPY) are excellent candidates because they modulate reproductive and feeding behavior, respectively. We asked if seasonal changes in AVT and NPY are concomitant with the seasonal migration to and from the feeding grounds in red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis). Ma…

The Histaminergic Tuberomamillary Nucleus Is Involved in Appetite for Sex, Water and Amphetamine.

The histaminergic system is one component of the ascending arousal system which is involved in wakefulness, neuroendocrine control, cognition, psychiatric disorders and motivation. During the appetitive phase of motivated behaviors the arousal state rises to an optimal level, thus giving proper intensity to the behavior. Previous studies have demonstrated that the histaminergic neurons show an earlier activation during the appetitive phase of feeding, compared to other ascending arousal system nuclei, paralleled with a high increase in arousal state. Lesions restricted to the histaminergic neu

Association of feeding patterns in infancy with later autism symptoms and neurodevelopment: a national multicentre survey.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to compare differences in infant feeding patterns (breastfeeding and complementary food supplementation) between children with the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typically developing (TD) children through a multicentre study. The relationship between these patterns and later core symptoms and neurodevelopment in children with ASD was also investigated. METHODS: We analysed breastfeeding and complementary feeding patterns in 1389 children with ASD and 1190 TD children. The Children Neuropsychological and Behavior Scale-Revision 2016 (CNBS-R2016) was used to assess neur

Chronic pramlintide decreases feeding via a reduction in meal size in male rats.

Amylin, a pancreatic hormone, is well-established to suppress feeding by enhancing satiation. Pramlintide, an amylin analog that is FDA-approved for the treatment of diabetes, has also been shown to produce hypophagia. However, the behavioral mechanisms underlying the ability of pramlintide to suppress feeding are unresolved. We hypothesized that systemic pramlintide administration in rats would reduce energy intake, specifically by reducing meal size. Male rats were given b.i.d. administration of intraperitoneal pramlintide or vehicle for 1 week, and chow intake, meal patterns, and body weigh

Active feeding of downstream migrating juvenile pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) revealed in a large Barents Sea river using diet and stable isotope analysis.

The recent, rapid spreading of non-native pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha in the North Atlantic area has raised concerns about their possible negative impacts on native salmonid species. Potential interactions include competition for food resources during the short freshwater phase of juvenile O. gorbuscha, but little is known about their feeding behavior in the newly occupied North Atlantic rivers. Using stable isotope and stomach content analyses, patterns of freshwater feeding of non-native O. gorbuscha fry were studied in a large Fennoscandian river, the Teno, that discharges to the Bar…

Intoxication by non-protein nitrogen compounds in rat feed.

Last year our white rats (Wistar origin) showed acute behavioral and physiological changes followed by death in 70% of the animals. We detected that the malfunctions could be attributed to the new batch of laboratory rat pellets provided two weeks before. High levels of urea (260 mg/kg) and ammonia (540 mg/kg) were found in the feed while usual values in other similar feed were 48 mg/kg and 82 mg/kg respectively. Suspecting an ammonia intoxication, concentrations of ammonia and urea were determined in blood, brain and liver. Brain neurotransmitters and blood tryptophan and serotonine (5-HT) we

Minireview. Stress induced eating.

The relationship of oral behaviors to stress has long been recognized both in humans and in wild animals. In the last decade numerous advances have been made in our understanding of stress-induced feeding predominately because of the development of the simple tail-pinch model of stress induced feeding in rats. Present evidence strongly implicates monoamines and the endogenous opioid peptides as well as other neuropeptides as playing a role in the central regulation of stress-induced eating.

The use of nonnutritive sucking to facilitate oral feeding in a term infant: a single case study.

This individual case study presents an evaluation of and reflection on the use of nonnutritive sucking as a technique to facilitate nutritive sucking with an infant with feeding difficulties. Nonnutritive sucking is used in a variable way with mainly premature or sick infants. However, the rationale underpinning use of such an approach is not clear. The infant participant in this study, Baby H, was born at 37 weeks. This case illustrates the use of nonnutritive sucking as an approach with supported rationales for promoting transition toward oral feeding with infants who have complex needs and
