Feeding Behaviour in the KPC Model of Pancreatic Cancer-Associated Cachexia: Alteration of Spontaneous and Evoked Feeding Behaviours.

BACKGROUND: The KPC mouse model of pancreatic cancer is gaining use in research, but detailed understanding of ingestive behaviour changes in this and other cachexia models is limited. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 J mice (7 weeks) were maintained under standard feed (PicoLab5L0D) and housing conditions (12:12 h; Light:Dark). Spontaneous feeding was observed in a Comprehensive Lab Animal Monitoring System: meal size, frequency, intermeal intervals and satiety ratio (i.e., time between meals divided by kcal energy in the preceding meal). Feeding was observed at baseline and over time after intraperito

Early Feeding for the Prevention of Neonatal Hypoglycaemia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Poor feeding, among other factors, predisposes neonates to hypoglycaemia. Early feeding is widely recommended to prevent hypoglycaemia in those at risk, but the effectiveness of this is uncertain. This review aimed to summarise and analyse the evidence on the effectiveness of early feeding for prevention of neonatal hypoglycaemia. METHODS: Four databases and three clinical trial registries were searched from inception to May 24, 2023. Published and unpublished randomised controlled trials (RCTs), quasi-RCTs, cluster randomised trials, non-randomised studies of interventions, and o

Gastrostomy feeding versus oral feeding alone for children with cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Children with cerebral palsy can be significantly disabled in terms of their ability to suck, chew and swallow. This can lead to significant impairment in feeding and, eventually, to undernutrition. It can also result in aspiration of food into the lungs. Length of feeding time may be considerably increased and, instead of being an enjoyable experience, mealtimes may be distressing for both child and carer. For children unable to maintain a normal nutritional state feeding by mouth, gastrostomy or jejunostomy tubes are increasingly being used to provide the digestive system with nu

Communication and feeding skills in Rett syndrome: Case report.

BACKGROUND: Rett syndrome (RTT) is a neurodevelopmental condition that causes regression of previously acquired abilities after normal development. RTT symptoms affect communication and feeding skills, which may have serious consequences for individuals with RTT. Essential aspects of their daily care include feeding and language intervention. METHOD: This report describes the case of a 14-year-old diagnosed with RTT. The adolescent engaged in an intervention program focusing on speech, language, and feeding needs. The article provides a comprehensive overview of the evaluation, intervention,

The FEED1 trial: protocol for a randomised controlled trial of full milk feeds versus intravenous fluids with gradual feeding for preterm infants (30-33 weeks gestational age).

BACKGROUND: In the UK, approximately 8% of live births are preterm (before 37 weeks gestation), more than 90% of whom are born between 30 and 36 weeks, forming the largest proportion of a neonatal units' workload. Neonatologists are cautious in initiating full milk feeds for preterm infants due to fears of necrotising enterocolitis (NEC). There is now evidence to dispute this fear. Small studies have shown that feeding preterm infants full milk feeds enterally from birth could result in a shorter length of hospital stay, which is important to parents, clinicians and NHS services without increa

Changes in fluid and acid-base status of diarrheic calves on different oral rehydration regimens.

The administration of oral rehydration solutions (ORS) is an effective method to treat dehydration and acidosis in calves suffering from diarrhea. The ORS can be prepared in water or milk. The aim of the present study was to elucidate how fluid and acid-base balance change after feeding milk compared with ORS prepared in water or milk to diarrheic calves. Calves (n = 30) with naturally acquired diarrhea were sequentially assigned in a 2:1 ratio to the following pretreatments: milk and water-ORS (pretreatment 1; n = 20 calves) or milk-ORS (pretreatment 2; n = 10 calves), respectively. Evaluation of splanchnic oximetry, Doppler flow velocimetry in the superior mesenteric artery and feeding tolerance in very low birth weight IUGR and non-IUGR infants receiving bolus versus continuous enteral nutrition.

BACKGROUND: IUGR infants are thought to have impaired gut function after birth, which may result in intestinal disturbances, ranging from temporary intolerance to the enteral feeding to full-blown NEC.In literature there is no consensus regarding the impact of enteral feeding on intestinal blood flow and hence regarding the best regimen and the best rate of delivering the enteral nutrition. METHODS/DESIGN: This is a randomized, non-pharmacological, single-center, cross-over study including 20 VLBW infants. Inclusion criteria * Weight at birth ranging: 700-1501 grams * Gestational age up to 25

Slow advancement of enteral feed volumes to prevent necrotising enterocolitis in very low birth weight infants.

BACKGROUND: The major modifiable risk factors for necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants relate to enteral feeding practices. Observational studies suggest that conservative feeding regimens that include slowly advancing enteral feed volumes reduce the risk of NEC. However, slow feed advancement may delay establishment of full enteral feeding and so be associated with metabolic and infectious morbidities secondary to prolonged exposure to parenteral nutrition. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of slow rates of enteral feed advancement on the incidence of NEC

Studies on vagal activation of gastric acid secretion in man.

Vagal activation produces a gastric acid secretory response by direct nervous stimulation of the parietal cell area and, at least in dogs, by gastrin released mainly from the antrum. In duodenal ulcer (DU) patients antrectomy reduces the acid response to sham feeding slightly more than the maximal acid output in response to pentagastrin, indicating that an antral factor contributes to the acid secretion induced by sham feeding. The marked acid response to sham feeding in antrectomized patients suggests that the direct nervous stimulation of the acid-secreting glands is the predominating stimul

Benefits and limitations of enteral nutrition in the early postoperative period.

BACKGROUND: Preexisting malnutrition has been shown to be a major clinical problem in surgical patients. Surgical stress itself increases the energy expenditure and protein loss making necessary the early nutritional support. Although there is strong evidence that "nil by mouth" is not justified, the data are still conflicting over the role of early enteral nutrition compared with the traditional methods of postoperative feeding including total parenteral nutrition support. METHODS AND FOCUS: This paper deals with the various trials related to early enteral feeding. It also compares this with

Home enteral tube feeding in children with inherited metabolic disorders: a review of long-term carer knowledge and technique.

BACKGROUND: Home enteral tube feeding (HETF) is commonly used in children with inherited metabolic disorders (IMD). It is unclear how caregiver knowledge and their safety in using tube feeding techniques changes over time. METHODS: Caregivers of children with IMD on HETF from one UK IMD centre had annual interviews over 3 years using a structured questionnaire and observation to assess HETF knowledge and safety techniques. RESULTS: Thirty-two caregivers of IMD children (median age 5.3 years; range 0.3-13.6 years) were studied. Seventy-eight percent (n = 25) of subjects had been on HETF for >
