BACKGROUND: Episodic memory deficits occur in alcohol use disorder (AUD), but their anatomical substrates remain in question. Although persistent memory impairment is classically associated with limbic circuitry disruption, learning and retrieval of new information also relies on frontal systems. Despite AUD vulnerability of frontal lobe integrity, relations between frontal regions and memory processes have been under-appreciated.
METHODS: Participants included 91 AUD (49 with a drug diagnosis history) and 36 controls. Verbal and visual episodic memory scores were age- and education-corrected…

A glioependymal cyst (GEC) is a rare type of cyst that occurs within the brain and spinal cord. A 42-year-old male patient with a cystic lesion in the right frontal lobe was admitted to the hospital to have his headache, vertigo, and body spasms evaluated. MRI scans showed a mass in the right side of the frontal lobe which caused a mass effect over the lateral ventricle and corpus callosum. The patient became symptom-free after the craniotomy, followed by fenestration of cortices and cyst wall removal.

The authors used voxel-based morphometry to compare the patterns of brain atrophy in two variants of pathologically confirmed frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD): FTLD with motor neuron disease (FTLD-MND) and FTLD with ubiquitin-only-immunoreactive neuronal changes (FTLD-U). Patterns of atrophy were distinct and different from each other. A localized pattern of frontal lobe atrophy was found in FTLD-MND with a more widespread pattern of atrophy affecting the frontal and temporal lobes in FTLD-U.

Sixteen Rett syndrome (RS) girls and 1 24 year old RS woman were compared with 16 neurologically healthy children as to the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). Hypoperfusion of the frontal lobes and parts of the midbrain was found in RS, with significant differences to controls at latest by the age of three to four years. The findings were in accordance with previous reports of morphological, neuroradiological and functional abnormalities in these areas, compatible with a statement that structures in the midbrain and in the frontal lobes may have particular pathophysiological relevance in RS.

Recent findings have shown that full-term infants engage in top-down sensory prediction, and these predictions are impaired as a result of premature birth. Here, we use an associative learning model to uncover the neuroanatomical origins and computational nature of this top-down signal. Infants were exposed to a probabilistic audiovisual association. We find that both groups (full term, preterm) have a comparable stimulus-related response in sensory and frontal lobes and track prediction error in their frontal lobes. However, preterm infants differ from their full-term peers in weaker tracking…

The complication rate of stereotactic electroencephalography (SEEG) is generally low, but various types of postoperative hemorrhage have been reported. We presented an unusual hemorrhagic complication after SEEG placement. A 20-year-old man presented with suspected frontal lobe epilepsy. We implanted 11 SEEG electrodes in the bilateral frontal lobes and the left insula. Computed tomography after implantation showed intraparenchymal hemorrhage in the left temporal lobe and insula and subarachnoid hemorrhage in the left Sylvian cistern. Later, the point of vessel injury was revealed from the ide…

There is evidence that frontal-subcortical circuits play an important role in the initial presentation of dementia in Down syndrome (DS), including changes in behavior, a decline in working memory and executive dysfunction. We evaluated 92 individuals with DS (≥30 years of age), divided into 3 groups by diagnosis-stable cognition, prodromal dementia, and Alzheimer's disease. Each individual was evaluated with an executive protocol developed for people with intellectual disabilities and was rated for behaviors related to frontal lobe dysfunction (disinhibition, executive dysfunction, and apathy…

We report a 39-year-old man who developed seizures as a predominant symptom of vitamin B12 deficiency. About a month before admission to our hospital, he experienced flickering vision, and had generalized convulsive seizures about ten times a day. On admission, he presented with visual disturbance and paralysis of the left leg. Brain MRI revealed a tumor-like lesion in the medial side of the right frontal lobe. Follow-up MRI about 2 weeks after admission demonstrated multiple lesions in the periaqueduct, the medial side of the bilateral thalami, the bilateral frontal lobes, and the bilateral o…

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the rates of lobar atrophy in the asymptomatic microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT) mutation carriers.
METHODS: MAPT mutation carriers (n = 14; 10 asymptomatic, 4 converters from asymptomatic to symptomatic) and noncarriers (n = 13) underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging and were followed annually with a median of 9.2 years. Longitudinal changes in lobar atrophy were analyzed using the tensor-based morphometry with symmetric normalization algorithm.
RESULTS: The rate of temporal lobe atrophy in asymptomatic MAPT mutation ca

OBJECTIVE: Alterations of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in subjects with liver cirrhosis have not been fully evaluated. We evaluated q … es.
RESULTS: The rCBF values were lower in cirrhotic patients than in controls, i.e. by 15% in the frontal lobe, by 12% in the parietal lobe, by 10% in the temporal and occipital lobes, and by 7% in the cerebellum. They decreased concomitantly with the severity of liver disease. A significant negative correlation was noted between rCBF values and Child-Pugh s …

The exploration of consciousness and the elucidation of the mechanisms underlying general anesthesia are two intertwined endeavors that have significantly advanced our understanding of the neural correlates of awareness. Both fields converge on the neural systems that regulate consciousness. Frontoparietal networks, known for their involvement in executive functions, attention, and cognitive control, emerge as key players in the transition from wakefulness to anesthesiainduced unconsciousness. This review synthesizes recent findings highlighting the pivotal role of fronto-parietal connectivity

Mirror neurons (MNs) are a class of cells in the fronto-parietal regions of the primate brain that activate during both action execution and observation. Over three decades, numerous neurophysiological studies have investigated the properties of MNs, proposing their involvement in social interaction. However, variability in definitions, recorded brain regions, and response dynamics has posed challenges to replicating MN findings and achieving a comprehensive understanding of their properties. Here, we present a curated dataset of hundreds of single neurons from multielectrode recordings in thr

The inferior-fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF) is a long-range white matter tract that connects the prefrontal cortex with parietal, posterior temporal and occipital cortices. First identified in the 19th century through the pioneering studies of Mayo and Meynert using blunt dissection, its anatomy and function remain contentious topics. Structurally, its projections are well documented in human blunt dissection and tractography literature, yet its existence has been questioned by tract-tracing studies in macaques. Functionally, while traditional results from direct white matter stimulation d

Working memory, which is foundational to higher cognitive function, is the "sketchpad of volitional control." Successful working memory is t … pital to the temporal lobe, during the early maintenance period, as well as top-down flows from the frontal lobe to the central areas as the delay behavior approached. Additionally, the correlation between behavioral performance and casual interactions increased over time, especially as memory-guided delayed behavior approached. Notably, when using the network …

The top-down control of attention involves command signals arising chiefly in the dorsal attention network (DAN) in frontal and parietal cortex and propagating to sensory cortex to enable the selective processing of incoming stimuli based on their behavioral relevance. Consistent with this view, the DAN is active during preparatory (anticipatory) attention for relevant events and objects, which, in vision, may be defined by different stimulus attributes including their spatial location, color, motion, or form. How this network is organized to support different forms of preparatory attention to

Simulation theories predict that the observation of other's laughter modulates activity in the same centers controlling its production. Investigating this issue is particularly challenging, given the technical difficulties of studying laughter production. Previous observations from surgical patients reported laughter production following the electrical stimulation (ES) of the pregenual anterior cingulate (pACC), the frontal operculum (FO) and the temporal pole (TP), deemed to control emotional, communicative and cognitive aspects of laughter, respectively. Here we investigated which region is

In this paper, an adaptive, non-linear, analytical methodology is proposed in order to quantitatively evaluate the instantaneous phase-synchrony dynamics in epilepsy patients. A group of finite neuronal oscillators is extracted from a multichannel electrocorticographic (ECoG) data, using the empirical mode decomposition (EMD). The instantaneous phases of the extracted oscillators are measured using the Hilbert transform in order to be utilized in the mean-phase coherence analysis. Finally, the dynamical evolution of phase-synchrony among the extracted neuronal oscillators within 1-600 Hz frequ
