Unraveling transport mechanisms and rainfall event-driven controls on non-point source antibiotic pollution by high-resolution process-based modeling.

In agro-ecosystems, heterogeneous sources and variable pathways of non-point source (NPS) pollution complicate the understanding of antibiotic behavior at the watershed scale. A quantitative understanding of the mechanisms governing source-transport-fate processes remain limited, particularly under varying rainfall conditions. This study used a distributed and process-based model to simulate daily fluxes of four tetracyclines (TCs) in an agricultural watershed and to identify key transport mechanisms and rainfall-driven controls. Partial least squares path modeling revealed that transport proc

Evaluation of the effects of sediments contaminated by industrial discharges to a unionid mussel (fatmucket, Lampsilis siliquoidea) and a common test benthic organism (amphipod, Hyalella azteca).

Freshwater mussels are among the most sensitive species to a variety of chemicals in water exposures. However, few studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of toxicants in sediments on mussels. Industrial discharges containing polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and metals entered the Kanawha River surrounding Blaine Island, South Charleston, West Virginia, USA, a river that supports eight federally endangered mussel species. We collected sediment samples from a highly contaminated site, a nearby upstream site, and a further upstream reference site to

Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances in aquatic ecosystems and wastewater treatment works in Africa: Occurrence, ecological implications, and future perspectives.

The increasing levels of industrialization and urbanization have led to the generation of significant amounts of wastewater and waste products, often containing chemicals like per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) commonly found in consumer products. PFASs are known for their persistence, ubiquity, and ecotoxicological impacts, raising concerns about potential harm to ecosystems. This paper reports the occurrence and evaluates the ecological risks of PFASs in aquatic ecosystems and wastewater treatment works (WWTWs) across Africa. We reviewed 32 papers published in the period 2009-2024

Influence of offshore cage culture on surface sediment in the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass: Assessed with stable isotope and fatty acid analyses.

Offshore aquaculture is undergoing rapid promotion and development in China. However, the potential impacts of offshore aquaculture activities on the marine environment remain insufficiently assessed, which could affect its sustainable development. This study investigated sediments at distances of 0 m (station A), 200 m (station B), 500 m (station C), 1000 m (station D) and 2000 m (station E) from the first submersible cage, "Deep Blue 1", in the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass. The total organic carbon (TOC) content, total nitrogen (TN) content, isotopic composition (δ13C and δ15N), and fatty acid

Deciphering microbial communities involved in marine steel corrosion using high-throughput amplicon sequencing.

To characterize the source and effects of bacterial communities on corrosion of intertidal structures, three different UK coastal sites were sampled for corrosion materials, sediment and seawater. Chemical analyses indicate the activity of sulfate-reducing microbes (SRBs) at 2 sites (Shoreham and Newhaven), but not at the third (Southend-on-Sea). Microbial communities in the deep sediment and corrosion samples are similar. The phylum Proteobacteria is dominant (40.4% of the total ASV), followed by Campilobacterota (11.3%), Desulfobacterota and Firmicutes (4%-5%). At lower taxonomic levels, cor

Characterization of anaerobic biotransformation of hexachlorocyclohexanes by novel microbial consortia enriched from channel and river sediments.

The microbial biotransformation of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) by novel anaerobic microbial consortia enriched from sediments of an industrial effluent channel and the river Ravi in Pakistan was examined. The anaerobic consortia were capable of biotransforming α-, β-, γ-, and δ-HCH through reductive dichloroelimination, resulting in the formation of benzene and monochlorobenzene. Concerning γ-HCH biotransformation by the channel and river cultures, isotopic fractionations for carbon (εC) were - 5.3 ± 0.4 (‰) and - 10.6 ± 1.2 (‰), while isotopic fractionations for chlorine (εCl) were - 4.4 ± 0.

Synergistic effects of microplastics and sulfonamide on greenhouse gas emissions in agricultural ditch sediments: Insights into microbial interactions.

Recently, concerns have been raised regarding concurrent pollution by microplastics and antibiotics in agricultural aquatic ecosystems. However, knowledge gaps remain regarding their combined effects on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and bacterial community assembly mechanisms. To address this, a microcosm experiment was performed to investigate the GHG (CH4, CO2, and N2O) emission characteristics and bacterial community assembly mechanisms in agricultural ditch sediments under co-exposure to different microplastics (polythene (PE), polylactic acid (PLA)), and sulfanilamide (SA). The global wa

Spatiotemporal variations of domoic acid: New findings in the sedimentary environment of a typical nearshore mariculture bay, China.

Domoic acid (DA) is a neurotoxin produced by marine microalgae. It tends to accumulate in marine shellfish and fish, posing a threat to aquaculture and seafood consumers' health. In this study, DA in the surface and bottom seawater, sediment, and porewater of the Jiaozhou Bay, a typical mariculture bay in China, was systematically investigated for the first time over different seasons. Surprisingly, a high concentration of DA was discovered in the marine sediment porewater (maximum detected concentration: 289.49 ng/L) for the first time. DA was found to be extensively distributed in the water

Long-term exposure to sediment-associated antidepressants impacts life-history traits in an estuarine deposit-feeding worm.

Hydrophobic pollutants, such as the antidepressant sertraline (SER), tend to sorb to particles in the water column and subsequently accumulate in the sediment. Long-term exposure to these pollutants may significantly affect sediment-dwelling organisms´ fitness and behavior. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the impact of chronic exposure to a range of environmentally relevant and higher concentrations of sediment-associated SER on the deposit-feeding polychaete Capitella teleta. Since certain antidepressants can function as neurotoxic chemicals and endocrine disruptors on non-targ

Metagenomic analysis manifesting intrinsic relatedness between antibiotic resistance genes and sulfate- and iron-reducing microbes in sediment cores of the Pearl River Estuary.

Antibiotic resistance is an increasingly concerned hotspot of human health. Microbial determinants that may affect the profiles of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environments need be explored. Here, sediment cores in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) were analyzed using metagenomic approaches. ARGs were vertically stratified in the PRE sediment cores in terms of both diversity and absolute levels. Multidrug resistance genes could account for approximately 65.0% of the total ARGs, followed by sulfonamides (19.1%), aminoglycosides (5.9%), beta-lactams (4.5%), etc. ARGs related to aminogly

Functional genes and microorganisms controlling in situ methylmercury production and degradation in marine sediments: A case study in the Eastern China Coastal Seas.

Dominant microorganisms and functional genes, including hgcA, hgcB, merA, and merB, have been identified to be responsible for mercury (Hg) methylation or methylmercury (MeHg) demethylation. However, their in situ correlation with MeHg levels and the processes of Hg methylation and MeHg demethylation in coastal areas remains poorly understood. In this study, four functional genes related to Hg methylation and MeHg demethylation (hgcA, hgcB, merA, and merB) were all detected in the sediments of the Eastern China Coastal Seas (ECCSs) (representative coastal seas highly affected by human activiti

Flocculating and dewatering of lake sediment: An in-situ pilot study comparing synthetic polymers and biopolymers for restoring lake water quality and reusing phosphorus.

Dredging of lake sediment is a method to remove accumulated phosphorus and nitrogen in lakes and thereby reducing the risk of eutrophication. After dredging, the sediment is dewatered to reduce the volume. It is important to get a high dry matter content and ensure that the filtrate does not contain harmful compounds so it can be returned to the lake. A pilot-scale belt filter and flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBC) were used for dewatering lake sediment with the sediment treated with a synthetic polymer or three different biopolymers. The goal of the study was to retain the phosphoru

Ameliorative effect of natural floating island as fish aggregating devices on heavy metals distribution in a freshwater wetland.

Growing human population and climate change are leading reasons for water quality deterioration globally; and ecologically important waterbodies including freshwater wetlands are in a vulnerable state due to increasing concentrations of pollutants like heavy metals. Given the declining health of these valuable resources, the present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of natural floating island in the form of fish aggregating devices (FADs) made of native weed mass on the distribution of heavy metals in the abiotic and bio compartments of a freshwater wetland. Lower concentrations of su

Sediment geochemical records of water quality deterioration in lake Jiren, a remote alpine lake on the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau.

Limited human activities in catchments make remote alpine lakes valuable sites for studying the evolution of lake environments in response to climate change and atmospheric deposition; however, this issue remains rarely studied owing to the scarcity of monitoring data. In this study, water quality evolution in Lake Jiren, a remote alpine lake on the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, over the past two centuries was reconstructed through geochemical analyses of aliphatic hydrocarbons, major and trace elements, and organic matter (OM) pyrolysis products in a dated sediment core, and the

Environmental Impacts of Hurricane Harvey on the Neches-Brakes Bayou River System in Beaumont, Texas.

Hurricane Harvey caused unprecedented floods across large regions of Southeast Texas resulting in several infrastructural issues. One of the notable failures was of a drinking water source pump in Beaumont, Texas, that necessitated the emergency use of a temporary pump intake station in the Neches River system. This study examines the environmental consequences of Harvey-induced flooding in the Neches River system by focusing on sensitive locations, including a Superfund site (International Creosoting, IC) and adjacent to the temporary pump intake. Post-Harvey water samples showed greater than

Salinity Impact on Composition and Activity of Nitrate-Reducing Fe(II)-Oxidizing Microorganisms in Saline Lakes.

Nitrate-reducing Fe(II)-oxidizing (NRFeOx) microorganisms contribute to nitrogen, carbon, and iron cycling in freshwater and marine ecosystems. However, NRFeOx microorganisms have not been investigated in hypersaline lakes, and their identity, as well as their activity in response to salinity, is unknown. In this study, we combined cultivation-based most probable number (MPN) counts with Illumina MiSeq sequencing to analyze the abundance and community compositions of NRFeOx microorganisms enriched from five lake sediments with different salinities (ranging from 0.67 g/L to 346 g/L). MPN result

Concentrations, sources, and exposure risk of polychlorinated biphenyls in soil profiles of the floodplain of the lower reaches of the River Niger, Nigeria.

The concentrations of 28 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined in soils collected at three depths from thirteen different sites along the floodplain of the lower reaches of the River Niger (LRRN) in Nigeria. The aim of the study was to provide data on the levels of contamination, sources of the contaminants, and risks to the ecosystem and humans. Soil samples were Soxhlet extracted with a solvent mixture of dichloromethane (DCM)/n-hexane and cleaned up on a column packed with Florisil and silica gel. The PCBs in the samples were quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Th

Effects of aquaculture waste feeds and antibiotics on marine benthic ecosystems in the Mediterranean Sea.

Intensive aquaculture is an important source of organic waste and antibiotics into the marine environment. Yet, their impacts on benthic marine ecosystems are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the ecological impacts of fish feed waste alone and in combination with three different antibiotics (i.e., oxytetracycline, florfenicol and flumequine) in benthic ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea by performing a field experiment. We assessed the fate of the antibiotics in the sediment and their accumulation in wild fauna after two weeks of exposure. Moreover, we investigated the impact of the f

0.25 Ga Salt Deposits Preserve Signatures of Habitable Conditions and Ancient Lipids.

Polygonal features in a ∼250 million-year-old Permian evaporitic deposit were investigated for their geological and organic content to test the hypothesis that they could preserve the signature of ancient habitable conditions and biological activity. Investigations on evaporitic rock were carried out as part of the MIne Analog Research (MINAR) project at Boulby Mine, the United Kingdom. The edges of the polygons have a higher clay content and contain higher abundances of minerals such as quartz and microcline, and clays such as illite and chlorite, compared with the interior of polygons, sugge

Distribution of chemical forms of mercury in sediments from abandoned ponds created during former gold mining operations in Colombia.

Total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were studied in sediments from 27 abandoned gold mining ponds (AGMPs) through small-scale artisanal gold mining in the district of San Juan in Chocó region of Colombia. The AGMPs were abandoned in the last century (1997) and were grouped into three distinct groups (2-6; 7-12; 13-20 years). Overall concentration (in ng g-1) pattern of THg in sediments varied from 39.06 to 1271.32 (avg. 209.57) with 174.81 (13-20 years), 205.56 (7-12 years) and 248.33 (2-6 years) respectively.
