From 1957 to 1988 eleven cases of primary mediastinal germ cell tumor were referred to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute (PMCI). Four were seminomas, three were mixed germ cell tumors, two were embryonal carcinomas and two were teratocarcinomas. Two of the eleven patients were female. For seminoma, surgical debulking and post-operative irradiation produced the best results. Mediastinal doses ranged from 30 to 37.5 Gy. Primary malignant germ cell tumours of the mediastinum are rare and are associated with poor survival when treated with surgery alone or with surgery when chemotherapy has failed. Recent improvements in combination chemotherapy have given some prospect of cure. A patient treated with primary surgical excision and postoperative chemotherapy, who remains free of disease 24 months after completion of treatment is reported here.

Thirty-five children with Stage III and IV nonseminomatous malignant germ cell tumors were treated, between June 1, 1977 and December 31, 1982, at Institut Gustave-Roussy, Villejuif, France, and Hospital General de Ninos, Buenos-Aires, Argentina: 11 sacrococcygeal, 12 ovarian, 6 testicular, 5 intrathoracic, and 1 intrabdominal site. The clinical and pathologic features of 30 ovarian mixed germ cell tumors (neoplasms containing combinations of malignant germ cell elements) were studied to determine their behavior and to compare them with pure forms of malignant germ cell tumors. The epidemiological studies regarding perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) suggests that its exposure causes reproductive health issues, the underlying mechanisms of which are still in its infancy. Here, we report that PFOA deteriorates female reproduction at multiple development stages. We characterized the immunohistochemical expression profiles of dysgerminomas from a 16-y-old maned wolf and 13 domestic dogs using the following biomarkers: Sal-like protein 4 (SALL4), octamer-binding transcription factor 3/4 (OCT3/4), placental alkaline phosphatase (PLAP), c-kit, and vimentin. The maned wolf had nonspecific and long-standing clinical signs of lethargy, anorexia, and weight loss, and was euthanized because of poor prognosis. At autopsy, the left ovary was effaced by a 12 × 8 × 6 cm mass, comprised of anaplastic cells with a mitotic count of 20 mitoses in 10 high power fields.
