Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns in Clostridioides difficile Strains Isolated from Neonates in Germany.

Young children are frequently colonized with Clostridioides (C.) difficile. Depending on their resistance patterns, antibiotic treatment can facilitate gastrointestinal spreading in colonized individuals, potentially leading to transmission to others. C. difficile was isolated from stool samples from infants born in two hospitals in Göttingen and Darmstadt, Germany. All isolates were subjected to phenotypic antimicrobial resistance testing, PCR-based screening for toxin genes and mass spectrometry-based exclusion of ribotypes 027 and 176. Within an initial cohort of 324 neonates with a longitu…

Examining vaccination coverage in Germany: spatiotemporal clustering of MMR coverage, 2008-14.

Vaccine hesitancy is an increasing global health threat but much of the recent research has centred on the USA. European countries provide an interesting context due to increases in vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks as well as variability in vaccination laws. We investigated the spatiotemporal clustering of Measles, Mumps, and Rubella vaccination coverage in Germany, a country with a historic absence of compulsory vaccination laws. We also examined measles incidence in the context of the spatiotemporal clustering results. While we did not identify strong spatial patterns of geographic clus…

High syphilis seropositivity in European brown hares (Lepus europaeus), Lower Saxony, Germany.

The lagomorph-infecting Treponema paraluisleporidarum is a close relative of the human syphilis-bacterium Treponema pallidum. There is a paucity of information on the epidemiology of hare syphilis and its relationship to the rabbit- and human-infecting treponemes that cause syphilis. In our study, we tested 734 serum samples from European brown hares (Lepus europaeus) collected between 2007 and 2019 in the federal state of Lower Saxony, Germany, for the presence of antibodies against T. paraluisleporidarum. Since T. paraluisleporidarum cross-reacts with T. pallidum antigen, we used a commercia…

Immunopathology of Fatal Human Variegated Squirrel Bornavirus 1 Encephalitis, Germany, 2011-2013.

Variegated squirrel bornavirus 1 (VSBV-1) is a zoonotic virus that causes fatal encephalitis in humans who are infected after contact with exotic squirrels. We analyzed the brain lesions and the immune responses in all 4 known human cases that showed panencephalitis. Inflammatory infiltrates in areas positive for VSBV-1 RNA and antigen consisted of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, with perivascular B-cell accumulation. Strong microglial response and bizarre astroglial expansion were present. Areas of malacia contained neutrophils and foamy microglia and macrophages. Immunopathologic examination during i

Seroconversion after needlestick injuries - analyses of statutory accident insurance claims in Germany.

Objective: After a needlestick injury (NSI) with contaminated blood, there is a risk of seroconversion. Statutory accident insurance (SAI) claims data were used to determine the numbers of seroconversions for hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV, HCV) and for HIV. Materials and methods: Cases of HBV, HCV or HIV infection recognised as occupational diseases between 2006 and 2015 were selected from the BGW (Berufsgenossenschaft für Gesundheitsdienst und Wohlfahrtspflege) database. Cases where an NSI was reported to the accident insurer before the diagnosis of the infectious disease was made were inclu

Family circumstances and survival from childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in West Germany.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the relationship between family characteristics and survival from childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia … as observed. CONCLUSION: Family circumstances may have an impact on survival from childhood ALL in Germany. Further research is warranted to elaborate the relationship of specific family characteristics and ALL survival and to investigate possible differential adherence to therapy and interactions with physicians.

Clinical course and long-term outcome of hantavirus-associated nephropathia epidemica, Germany.

Human infection with Puumala virus (PUUV), the most common hantavirus in Central Europe, causes nephropathia epidemica (NE), a disease characterized by acute kidney injury and thrombocytopenia. To determine the clinical phenotype of hantavirus-infected patients and their long-term outcome and humoral immunity to PUUV, we conducted a cross-sectional prospective survey of 456 patients in Germany with clinically and serologically confirmed hantavirus-associated NE during 2001-2012. Prominent clinical findings during acute NE were fever and back/limb pain, and 88% of the patients had acute kidney …

Methoxypyrazine composition of Coccinellidae-tainted Riesling and Pinot noir wine from Germany.

BACKGROUND: Harmonia axyridis (multicolored Asian ladybeetle) and Coccinella septempunctata (seven-spot ladybeetle) (Coccinellidae) are found in many wine regions in Europe and the Americas, where they are responsible for a pronounced wine fault known as 'ladybug taint' when incorporated with grapes during harvest operations. Methoxypyrazines have been proposed in the literature as the compounds responsible for the taint. This study sought to expand on this identification and also determine the effectiveness of heating Coccinellidae-affected grape must prior to fermentation as a possible remed

[Ambulatory care-sensitive conditions in Germany: a small area analysis (2006-2009)].

PURPOSE: The paper aims (1) to identify and depict cartographically ambulatory care-sensitive conditions in Germany (based on data for the years 2006-2009) and (2) to discuss the implications. METHOD: The selection of ambulatory care-sensitive conditions (ACSC) was based on a literature review by Purdy et al. (2009) because a German catalogue of ACSC does not yet exist. Five of these indications were excluded due to limited data -access or a low number of cases. Additionally, 2 -diagnoses that are potentially relevant for Germany were included. Subsequently, diagnosis-specific hospitalisation…

Emergence of Citrobacter freundii carrying IMP-8 metallo-β-lactamase in Germany.

Metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) in Enterobacteriaceae are an increasing problem worldwide. This report describes the isolation of Citrobacter freundii carrying IMP-8 MBL from three patients during the period from March 2012 until March 2013 in Germany. The bla IMP-8 enzyme is predominantly found in Asia, where IMP-8 has spread to various enterobacterial species causing serious infections. To our best knowledge, this is the first report of bla IMP-8 habouring Enterobacteriaceae in Europe.

Decline in hepatitis E virus antibody prevalence in southeastern Germany, 1996-2011.

UNLABELLED: In the past decade, an increasing frequency of acute hepatitis E was noted in Germany and other European countries. Moreover, a high prevalence (17%) of hepatitis E virus (HEV) immunoglobulin G antibodies (anti-HEV) was recently found in the adult German population. Although this suggests an emerging pathogen, reports from other countries gave hints to a completely new aspect: a possible decrease in anti-HEV prevalence during the last decades. To investigate the time trends of hepatitis E in southeastern Germany, we performed anti-HEV testing in sera taken from adults in 1996 and 2…

Dr. Haakon Sæthre: a Norwegian neuroscientist and his resistance against Nazi Germany.

Dr. Haakon Sæthre was a leader of Norwegian neurology and psychiatry. He was resourceful, compassionate and had immense pride in his independent homeland. He described Sæthre-Chotzen syndrome (acrocephalosyndactyly type III). When Nazi Germany occupied Norway during World War II, Sæthre fearlessly and actively resisted, from revoking his medical association membership, to hiding persecuted Jews as patients in his psychiatric ward and aiding in their escape to Sweden, to managing the largest "illegal" food warehouse in Oslo with Danish humanitarian aid. As a prominent and noticeable citizen, he…

Risk of subsequent primary cancer among prostate cancer patients in Bavaria, Germany.

As the prevalence of prostate cancer in Germany is increasing, the issue of subsequent primary cancer (SPC) becomes more relevant. The aim of this study was to estimate the risk and its changes over time of developing SPC among prostate cancer patients compared with the general male population in Bavaria, southern Germany. Utilizing data from the Population-Based Cancer Registry Bavaria, the risk of SPC was evaluated in 59 259 men with prostate cancer diagnosed between 2002 and 2008 who contributed 159 892 person-years. The relative and absolute risk of developing SPC were calculated using the…

Ultrastructural pathology of primary ciliary dyskinesia: report about 125 cases in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare genetically induced disorder of cilia inducing mainly respiratory diseases. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of ciliary ultrastructure is classically used for diagnosis. We report our experience of TEM investigations in a large series of patients. METHODS: TEM analysis performed of 742 biopsies from patients with suspected PCD was reviewed retrospectively. Ultrastructural defects were analyzed further in 125 cases with changes typical for PCD. RESULTS: In 18.1% of patients diagnosis of PCD was made because of morphological

Sporadic cases of acute autochthonous hepatitis E virus infection in Southwest Germany.

Hepatitis E infection is usually a self-limiting disease and an important cause of acute hepatitis in tropical and subtropical regions where the virus is endemic. In industrialized countries, sporadic cases of acute hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections have been described and the number of documented autochthonous infections seems to be increasing. We report three sporadic cases of autochthonous hepatitis E infections in Southwestern Germany which presented at our university hospital within two years. All cases were men who presented with acute hepatitis, icterus and elevated liver. In case 1 an…

Epidemiological data on pathogenic Yersinia enterocolitica in Southern Germany during 2000-2006.

Yersinia enterocolitica is the most common species causing enteric yersiniosis, which is still the third most frequently reported foodborne gastroenteritis in Europe. Y. enterocolitica generally causes sporadic human infections, and outbreaks are rare. The most important infection source of yersiniosis is believed to be contaminated pork and pork products. Data on the prevalence of pathogenic Y. enterocolitica in animals and foodstuffs are very limited and old; thus, more information on the extent and range of the prevalence of this enteropathogen in nonhuman sources is needed. In this work, p
