A red eye is mostly a relatively harmless sign of simple conjunctivitis. Viral conjunctivitis may be extremely contagious. If no improvement is seen after ten days of treatment, referral to an ophthalmologist is indicated. Local corticosteroids and local anesthetics must not be prescribed. A new method of measuring the iris contour has been set up with a personal computer. The model of a parabolic curve, an approximate mimic iris contour curve, was traced to define the profile contour of the iris from a photograph. PURPOSE: To determine in a population-based study whether parapapillary atrophy is associated with glaucoma.
DESIGN: Population-based cross-sectional study.
METHODS: The Beijing Eye Study included 4,439 of 5,324 subjects invited to participate (response rate, 83.4%). Mean age was 56.2 +/- 10.6 years (range, 40 to 101 years). Color optic disk photographs (30 degrees) were examined morphometrically. Parapapillary atrophy was divided into alpha and beta zones. Glaucomatous optic nerve atrophy was defined by a glaucomatous optic nerve head appearance.

We report a case of nanophthalmos with intractable secondary glaucoma. Bilateral cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation was used as definitive treatment for the chronic angle-closure glaucoma. The changes in angle and ciliary body anatomy were well documented with preoperative and postoperative Pentacam assessment (Oculus Optikgeräte GmbH) and ultrasound biomicroscopy (Paradigm Medical Industries) images. We believe these are the first diagnostic and prognostic images of this kind in a nanophthalmic eye.

Two siblings, a 56-year-old white man and a 44-year-old white woman, with systemic mucopolysaccharidosis I-S (Scheie's syndrome) developed acute glaucoma successively in each eye. Their management was complicated by an inability to visualize the anterior chamber angle due to corneal clouding by acid mucopolysaccharide (AMP) deposition. The mechanism of their glaucoma resembled angle closure, which may have been related to thickening of anterior ocular structures due to abnormal AMP storage.
