Spitz nevus is a benign melanocytic proliferation that shows relatively characteristic clinicopathologic features. Despite this, Spitz nevus is clinically confused with many other lesions, and histopathologically it is sometimes difficult to distinguish it from melanoma. However, Spitz nevus rarely causes differential diagnostic problems with granulomatous dermatitis. This article describes an 8-year-old girl who presented with a nodule on her right arm, a clinical appearance of a pyogenic granuloma. Histopathologically, there was a dermal lesion composed of aggregates of large epithelioid cel

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) commonly presents as non-tender, enlarged lymph nodes, accompanied by diffuse symptoms of fatigue and low-grade intermittent fever and it is derived predominantly from the cells of the B lymphocyte series. NHL cases occur extra-nodally and in 3% of these cases the initial presentation may be in the oral cavity. Though extra-nodal NHL of the oral cavity is a rare finding, patients with oral lesions of NHL commonly present at the dental clinic in the first instance. A careful clinical evaluation supported by histopathological and other laboratory investigations will

Genitourinary tuberculosis (TB) is the most frequent manifestation of extrapulmonary TB, where the epididymides, seminal vesicles and prostate are the commonly infected sites, followed by the testes. We report a 29-year-old man who presented with primary infertility since 2 years. He had a history of bilateral painful scrotal swelling with fever since 4 years, diagnosed as pyogenic scrotal abscess, which was managed by incision and drainage. At presentation, fever, weight loss and night sweats were absent. On examination, he had ovoid slightly tender, firm to hard irregular masses in the lower

PURPOSE: We report the results of 25 patients with endophthalmitis treated with evisceration with and without cornea preservation and primary orbital implants.
DESIGN: Retrospective observational case series.
METHODS: The records of 25 consecutive patients who underwent evisceration for endophthalmitis between June 1999 and November 2005 were reviewed. Ages ranged between three and 90 years (mean 57.6 years). The cause of endophthalmitis and bacterial agents were documented. All the patients were treated with topical, intravitreal, and intravenous antibiotics for endophthalmitis before evisc

Inverted follicular keratosis (IFK) is a benign skin lesion that typically presents as an asymptomatic, solitary nodule on the face of middle-aged and older individuals. IFK may mimic malignant lesions, especially squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), both clinically and pathologically. We report a 35-year-old male patient who had an exophytic nodule with papillary surface on his right nasal ala of 3 months' duration. The nodule was solitary, flesh colored, 5 mm in diameter and tended to bleed. The patient received shave excision with cautery under the clinical impression of pyogenic granuloma. Patho

OBJECTIVE: To study the occurrence and significance of Charcot-Leyden crystals (CLC) in routinely processed, eosinophil-rich smears.
STUDY DESIGN: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) smears of 258 cases of cysticercosis, 35 of lymphatic filariasis and 19 of nonparasitic lesions with significant eosinophils were screened for the presence of CLC and correlated with the cytomorphology of the underlying disease.
RESULTS: Charcot-Leyden crystals were seen in lymphatic filariasis (4), eosinophilic granuloma (1), chronic myelogenous leukemia (1) and pyogenic abscess (1). CLC were conspicuous by their abse

A 39-year-old white man presented with four discrete dermal nodules in his right upper arm. Biopsy revealed superficial dermal well-circumscribed nodules composed of solid areas and vascular spaces lined by epithelioid endothelial cells and a similar nodule composed of spindle and epithelioid cells. A moderate mitotic count of 3-4 mitoses/10 hpf was present. Multiple lesions erupted 1 month later distally and proximally to the original lesions. Magnetic resonance imaging of the right arm demonstrated a lesion in the humerus. Biopsy of the humerus showed a vascular tumor with similar histologic

Although nondiphtherial corynebacteria are ubiquitous in nature and commonly colonize the skin and mucous membranes of humans, they rarely account for clinical infection. Corynebacterium striatum has rarely been reported to be a pathogen, causing pleuropulmonary infections and bacteremia in only immunocompromised or anatomically altered patients. We noted C. striatum to be the infecting pathogen or copathogen in six patients. To our knowledge, this report describes the first cases of C. striatum causing infection of exist sites of central venous catheters, thrombophlebitis associated with cent

Beta-2 microglobulin (beta-MG) is a low molecular weight protein of 100 amino-acids. It is the light chain of HLA-A, -B or -C antigens which on the surface of nearly all nucleated cells. Clinically, the serum levels of beta-MG are increased in patients with renal failure, immune disorders, and various malignant diseases. In this study, the serum levels of beta-MG were measured clinically for a total of 114 cases. Diverse conditions were ensured by biopsy except for 10 control cases, and the following eight groups were diversified: (1) control group, 10 cases; (2) oral carcinoma, 36 cases; (3)

The clinicopathologic spectrum of angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE) is reported through a study of 116 cases (67 male and 49 female) submitted to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. The lesions are most common in the head-neck region and are characterized by single or multiple smooth-top papules or plaques of varying color. Microscopically, ALHE consists of anomalous vascular proliferations and varying degrees of nodular and diffuse lymphocytic infiltrates with eosinophils at all levels of the corium and subcutaneous tissue. In fifty-three cases an arterial structure, con

Five cases of Bowen disease of the nail apparatus were studied and the 20 cases published to date reviewed. The lesion was characterized by either periungual redness with scaling and erosions, whitish cuticle, hyperkeratotic or papilomatous process, fissure or crusted ulcer in the lateral nail fold or the nail bed with eventual partial or total destruction of the nail plate and sometimes soreness on the pressure. The key of the diagnosis is the histological picture, identical with that of Bowen diseases of other skin areas. Among the 25 cases, Bowen disease was found mainly in males (20 out of

INTRODUCTION: A peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) presents similarly to other soft tissue reactive lesions, such as pyogenic granuloma or peripheral giant cell granuloma, and yet the pathogenesis of POFs remains undetermined. Surgical excision is the standard of care for a POF, but given their propensity to present in the esthetic area and likelihood for recurrence, these lesions must be addressed with careful technique to prevent mucogingival defects. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first report to show that complete excision of a recurrent POF followed by a pouch recipien

BACKGROUND: Biopsy is an important diagnostic tool used in the diagnosis of lesions ranging from simple non-neoplastic, tumor-like lesions to malignancies, and is often the only way to diagnose oral lesions and diseases. The gingiva is the most common site for some kind of irritation or low-grade injury, resulting in localized overgrowths that are considered to be reactive and non-neoplastic lesions. This aim of this study is to analyze the frequency and distribution of gingival lesions in the Gujarati population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, gingival biopsies submitted

Gingival enlargements are a common clinical finding and most represent a reactive hyperplasia as a direct result of plaque related inflammatory gingival disease. These generally respond to conservative tissue management and attention to plaque control. However, a small group are distinct from these and whilst they also represent a reactive tissue response, this occurs at the level of the superficial fibres of the periodontal ligament. These epulides grow from under the free gingival margin and not as a result of a primary inflammatory gingival enlargement. This distinct aetiopathogenesis separ
