Epidemiological studies have indicated incidences of 32.9% and 27.8% for rickets and osteomalacia, respectively, in Bactrian camels (Camelus bactrianus), but there is an increased incidence under drought conditions, sometimes reaching 75%. Delayed loss of residual acoustic hearing after cochlear implantation is a common but poorly understood phenomenon due to the scarcity of relevant temporal bone tissues. A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric method for the simultaneous determination of 75 abuse drugs and metabolites, including 19 benzodiazepines, 19 amphetamines, two opiates, eight opioids, cocaine, lysergic acid diethylamide, zolpidem, three piperazines and 21 metabolites in human hair samples, was developed and validated. A new autosomal recessive mouse mutation, causing loss of hair in homozygous mice 2-3 weeks after birth, arose spontaneously in a colony at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), Mill Hill, London in early 1998.
