Previously untreated symptomatic volunteers with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) performed the Temperament and Character Inventory at baseline and after 4 to 6 months of paroxetine treatment. Scores from 29 volunteers were analyzed with paired t-tests. A marked reduction was noted in Harm Avoidance and a marked increase was noted in Self-Directedness. Smaller changes were noted in Cooperativeness and Novelty Seeking. Overall, treatment was associated with a reduction in maladaptive personality traits.

BACKGROUND: Supervised injecting facilities (SIFs) reduce drug-related harms and associated costs, but evidence is limited to a few settings. This study estimates rates of initiation, cessation, and resumption of Melbourne's Medically Supervised Injecting Room (MSIR) use among a cohort of people who inject drugs.
METHODS: Data were drawn from SuperMIX, an ongoing cohort study since 2008. Participants complete baseline and annual surveys, including MSIR use since its opening on 30 June 2018. We reported baseline characteristics and calculated incidence rates (IRs) of MSIR initiation, cessation

BACKGROUND: Young people's engagement in gambling can be linked to gambling-related harm. There is a lack of independently funded and evidence-based school-based interventions that seek to prevent and reduce the harms associated with gambling.
OBJECTIVES: To conduct a pilot cluster randomised controlled trial of a gambling prevention intervention (Preventing Gambling Related Harm in Adolescents) among young people aged 13-15 years to determine the utility of conducting a phase III randomised controlled trial assessing effectiveness and cost-effectiveness.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Two-arm, pilot c

Bereavement from loss related to drug poisoning, the leading cause of injury-related death in the United States, is associated with elevated risk for prolonged grief disorder, substance use, and poor mental health outcomes. Despite this, few interventions specifically target survivors of overdose loss. The Family Support Program (FSP) is a novel, social worker-delivered bereavement support service provided by the Drug Intelligence and Intervention Group of the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner for family, friends, and other close social network members bereaved by drug poisoning.

BACKGROUND: The increasing implementation of harm reduction strategies such as take-home naloxone has placed people who use drugs (PWUD) in the position of overdose responders during overdose events, but the perspectives of PWUD are underrepresented in public health policy and practice concerning overdose response. We conducted this study to examine PWUD's perspectives on first response services for overdose and to learn how PWUD can be supported more effectively when they respond to overdoses.
METHODS: The Research with Expert Advisors on Drug Use (READU) team, a community-based research tea…

BACKGROUND: Supervised injection sites (SIS) offer a hygienic environment in which people can inject drugs under observation; as such, these harm reduction services have been on the forefront of the overdose epidemic. We sought to understand factors predictive of an overdose requiring an emergency response intervention at SIS in Montréal, Canada.
METHODS: We used administrative data from all four Montréal SIS from 1 March 2018 - 31 October 2022 to first calculate the rate of onsite overdose requiring intervention (e.g., naloxone or oxygen administration, nurse or paramedic assessment, etc.) a…

BACKGROUND: In British Columbia, Canada, smoking is the most common modality of drug use among people who die of opioid toxicity. We aimed to assess oxygen saturation (SpO2) while people smoked opioids during a pilot study that introduced continuous pulse oximetry at overdose prevention services (OPS) sites.
METHODS: This was an observational cohort study, using a participatory design. We implemented our monitoring protocol from March to August 2021 at four OPS. We included adults (≥ 18 years) presenting to smoke opioids. A sensor taped to participants' fingers transmitted real-time SpO2 read

BACKGROUND: Prison needle exchange programs (PNEPs) are a critical component for harm reduction in prisons. Little is known about the PNEP access barriers for people who are incarcerated, but the low uptake in the Canadian program highlights these constraints. We aimed to identify the barriers and potential solutions for increasing PNEP coverage in the nine Canadian federal prisons where they operate.
METHODS: Eighteen focus groups were conducted in nine prisons using nominal group technique (NGT) with two stakeholders: peer advocates and people who use or identified as potential users of the…

BACKGROUND: The increasing diversity of psychoactive substances on the unregulated drug market poses significant health, psychological, and social risks to people who use drugs (PWUD). To address these risks, various harm reduction (HR) policies have been implemented, including drug checking services (DCS). Many analytical methods are used for DCS. While qualitative methods (e.g., thin layer chromatography, spectroscopy) are easier to implement, they are not as accurate as quantitative methods (e.g., LC-UV, LC-MS). Some HR programmes have implemented high-performance liquid chromatography coup…

INTRODUCTION: People who use drugs (PWUD) are at increased risk for HIV infection. HIV self-testing (HIVST) is a promising method for identifying new infections, but optimal distribution strategies remain understudied.
METHODS: To characterize PWUD by HIVST distribution strategy (peers vs. mail), we examined data from July 2022 to June 2023 collected from a real-world HIVST program led by the non-profit, Florida Harm Reduction Collective. We used descriptive statistics and Poisson regressions with robust error variance to compare those who received HIVST through peers or via mail by socio-dem…

Health and social issues in aging populations of people who inject drugs (PWID) tend to aggregate, despite risky injecting practices decreasing with age. Identifying needs and avenues of support is becoming increasingly important. We described the health and social situation among clients of a long-running supervised injecting facility (SIF) in Sydney, Australia. An interviewer-administered survey (n = 182) assessed current housing status, employment, physical and mental health, incarceration history, drug use, engagement in drug treatment, health service utilization, and willingness to accept

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that government and industry discussions of gambling may focus on personal responsibility for gambling harm. In Australia, these discussions have largely excluded people with lived experience of problem gambling, including those involved in peer support and advocacy.
METHODS: We conducted 26 in-depth interviews with people with current or previous problem gambling on electronic gaming machines (EGMs) involved in peer support and advocacy activities, using an approach informed by Interpretive Policy Analysis and Constructivist Grounded Theory.

BACKGROUND: Research has demonstrated that the promotion of gambling, particularly within sport, may have a significant impact on positively shaping young people's attitudes towards gambling. While some governments have implemented restrictions to limit young people's exposure to gambling advertising, few studies have investigated where young people recall seeing gambling advertising, and whether they perceive that advertising restrictions have gone far enough in reducing exposure to these promotions.
METHOD: Mixed methods, interviewer-assisted surveys were conducted with n = 111 young people

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Managed alcohol programs (MAPs) are a novel harm reduction intervention for people who experience long-term homelessness and severe long-term alcohol dependence. MAPs provide regulated amounts of alcohol onsite under supervision. Preliminary international evidence suggests that MAPs are associated with improvements such as reduced non-beverage alcohol consumption and decreases in some alcohol-related harms. There are currently no MAPs in Australia. We aimed to assess the feasibility of a MAP in inner-Sydney.
DESIGN AND METHODS: A survey among eligible homeless alcohol-d…

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs face several health issues because of unsafe injecting practices. We aimed to evaluate changes in supervised drug-injecting practices following the implementation of a face-to-face educational intervention.
METHODS: The national study ANRS-AERLI was conducted in 17 harm reduction (HR) facilities in France between 2011 and 2013. Eight offered the intervention and nine did not. We conducted a pre-post analysis focusing on injecting practices data, collected in the 8 HR facilities providing the intervention. The intervention consisted of providing face-to-face…

Previous research using the Gambling Outcome Expectancies Scale (GOES; Flack and Morris in J Gambl Stud, 2015. doi: 10.1007/s10899-014-9484-z ) revealed the instrument has excellent psychometric properties and differentially predicts gambling frequency and problem gambling scores. However, like the existing gambling motivation scales, the GOES psychometric properties and predictive utility have not been tested outside of cross sectional studies. The current study used a prospective survey design to redress this issue. Eight hundred and ninety-three participants, drawn from the general communit
