Variations of endoscopic and open repair of metopic craniosynostosis.

In contrast to sagittal craniosynostosis, the role of endoscopic, minimally invasive approaches in the treatment of metopic craniosynostosis with resulting trigonocephaly is not as well defined. We reviewed the senior authors' (H.M. and S.C.) clinical experience in the treatment of children with metopic craniosynostosis using a variety of endoscopic and open techniques. Thirty-three patients were treated at a single institution during a 5-year period with between 3 and 8 years of follow-up. Sixteen patients underwent 3 variations of endoscopic approaches, and 17 patients had open fronto-orbita

Children's Height and Injury Risk With Child Restraint Systems.

IMPORTANCE: The transition from child restraint systems (CRSs) to seat belts (SBs) is often based on fixed age or height thresholds. However, the association between height and injury patterns among injured children remains insufficiently characterized within clinical trauma settings. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between height and regional injury patterns among children involved in motor vehicle crashes evaluated at trauma centers and to assess how these patterns vary between CRS and SB users. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study of children 6 to 11 y

The impact of helmet use on outcomes after a motorcycle crash.

BACKGROUND: Helmet use in a motorcycle collision has been shown to reduce head injury and death. Its protective effect on the cervical spine (C-spine), however, remains unclear. The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between helmet use and C-spine injuries. METHOD: Retrospective National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) study. All motorcycle collisions between 2007 and 2014 involving either a driver or passenger were included. Data collected included demographics, vital signs, Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS), Injury Severity Score (ISS) and specific injuries. The primary outcome wa

Cranial Base and Posterior Cranial Vault Asymmetry After Open and Endoscopic Repair of Isolated Lambdoid Craniosynostosis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that open cranial vault remodeling does not fully address the endocranial deformity. This study aims to compare endoscopic-assisted suturectomy with postoperative molding helmet therapy to traditional open reconstruction by quantifying changes in cranial base morphology and posterior cranial vault asymmetry. METHODS: Anthropometric measurements were made on pre- and 1-year postoperative three-dimensionally reconstructed computed tomography scans of 12 patients with unilateral lambdoid synostosis (8 open and 4 endoscopic-assisted). Cranial base asymmetry

Early frontofacial symmetry after correction of unilateral coronal synostosis: frontoorbital advancement vs endoscopic strip craniectomy and helmet therapy.

Frontoorbital advancement (FOA) improves forehead and superior orbital asymmetry associated with unilateral coronal synostosis but has little effect on facial asymmetry. This study compares frontofacial symmetry after FOA and endoscopically assisted suturectomy (ESC) and postoperative helmet therapy.A retrospective review of 2 cohorts of patients with nonsyndromic unilateral coronal synostosis who had either FOA or ESC was undertaken. Choice of procedure was determined by age of patient at referral (younger than 4 months, FOA or ESC; older than 4 months, only FOA). Vectra 3D imaging system (Ca

Analysis of pediatric all-terrain vehicle trauma data in Middle Tennessee: implications for injury prevention.

BACKGROUND: Trauma registries capture data about injuries that can be used to objectively guide injury prevention initiatives. This article analyzes trauma registry data to describe the nature and distribution of all-terrain vehicle (ATV) injuries in Middle Tennessee. A community injury prevention effort, based on this analysis, is also presented. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of data (2007-2009) from the trauma registry of a Level I pediatric trauma center in Middle Tennessee was conducted. Patients younger than 16 years with ATV-related injuries were included in the analysis (n = 163).

Injuries among powered two-wheeler users in eight European countries: a descriptive analysis of hospital discharge data.

Powered two-wheelers (PTWs--mopeds, motorcycles, and scooters) remain the most dangerous form of travel on today's roads. This study used hospital discharge data from eight European countries to examine the frequencies and patterns of injury among PTW users (age≥14 years), the predicted incidence of the loss of functional ability, and the mechanisms of the head injuries observed (all in light of increased helmet use). Of 977,557 injured patients discharged in 2004, 12,994 were identified as having been injured in PTW collisions. Lower extremity injuries accounted for 26% (25.6-26.7, 95% C.I.)

Bicycle injury prevention and safety in senior riders.

Senior bicycle riders have special safety and injury prevention needs. They are at greater risk for injury and mortality. Very few educational materials have been developed to assist this group in improving their riding abilities and preventing injury to themselves. This article reviews the risks encountered by older bicyclists, discusses injury revention, and describes the development of an educational video developed especially for senior riders consistent with the goals of the National Bicycle Safety Conference.

Possible oral lead intake via contaminated facial skin.

Thirty-six workers exposed to low or moderate levels of lead at low temperature refining processes were surveyed to examine the route of lead intake. Blood lead level (BPb), delta-aminolevulinic acid in urine, lead in facial skin wipes (Face-Pb) and lead in fingernails (Nail-Pb) were measured and their personal hygienic behavior was surveyed by a questionnaire. BPb showed a significant correlation with Face-Pb and Nail-Pb (r = 0.730 and r = 0.590, respectively). Multiple regression analysis extracted the factors of smoking at the workplace, face-Pb and nail-Pb as significantly related to BPb l

The fatal injuries of car drivers.

We often refer to road fatalities without knowing exactly what injuries are responsible for them. Based on the Rhône Road Trauma Registry this paper sets out to describe the topography, nature and frequency of the fatal injuries sustained by car drivers. Mean annual mortality at the wheel of a car, computed by dividing the total number of drivers killed (n=383) by the population of the Rhône Département (1.6 million) during the period 1996-2004 was 5.41 males per 100,000 and 1.41 females per 100,000, with 78% of the casualties residing in the Département. A reduction has been observed since 20
