High degree atrio-ventricular block following COVID-19 vaccination.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in more than four million deaths globally. In addition to the lower respiratory system, a wide range of major organ injuries have been reported among patients infected with COVID-19. These injuries include cardiac involvement. The spectrum of cardiac manifestations includes cardiac injury, heart failure, cardiogenic shock, acute coronary syndrome, myocarditis, tachyarrhythmias, and bradyarrhythmia [1]. Different degrees of atrioventricular blocks have been reported [2]. The pathogenesis of these complications is not fully understood

Visceral injury in electrical shock trauma: proposed guideline for the management of abdominal electrocution and literature review.

UNLABELLED: Victims of electrical burns account for approximately 5% of admissions to major burn centers. The first case of visceral injury caused by electrical burns was described in 1927 by Simonin, who reported perforation of the small intestine. Other rare cases were reported over the following years. The colon and small intestine were the organs most frequently affected. Less frequently involved organs were the heart, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, lung, and kidney. We highlight the potential fatal visceral injuries after the electrical trauma. This study provides a rev

A Magnetized Brace Designed to Elevate the Extremity after Hand Trauma and Surgery.

Hand elevation is a common recommendation for the treatment of hand injuries to combat development of painful swelling. However, noncompliance with elevation after hand procedures is common, and this is due in part to the lack of acceptable orthotics to assist in this elevation. Conventional slings are often not recommended due to potential shoulder morbidity. Additionally, the standard sling design allows for the hand to fall in a dependent position below the level of the heart. Herein described is a brace that uses magnetic technology designed to provide support for hand elevation that is in

Cardiac rupture caused by traffic accident: Case reports and a literature review.

The commonest cause of blunt cardiac injuries is from traffic accidents followed by violent falls, sport activities, accidents or a fight but rupture of the heart is rare and lethal. The precise incidence of cardiac injury after a blunt chest trauma is unknown as rates vary greatly in the literature from between 7% and 76% of cases. Autopsy studies have shown that the right ventricle is the most frequently ruptured, followed by the left ventricle, right atrium, intraventricular septum, left atrium and interatrial septum with decreasing frequency. Post-mortem imaging is a rapidly advancing fiel

Bilateral lower limb amputations in a nigerian child following high-voltage electrical burns injury: a case report.

UNLABELLED: The human body conducts electricity very well. Direct contact with electric current can be lethal. The passage of electric current through the body is capable of producing a wide spectrum of injuries, including serious damage to the heart, brain, skin and muscles. Naked high-voltage electric cables negligently abandoned in residential, commercial and industrial areas are a recipe for disaster. This is a case report of a 5-year girl child who had bilateral lower limb gangrene following electrical burns injury. She presented with a fourday history of electrical burns injuries of both

Activation of Neural Modeling-Related Genes in the Heart of Mice after Gamma Irradiation.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

OBJECTIVE: Radiation-induced heart disease (RIHD) is a common sequela of thoracic irradiation. At the same time, nerve remodeling is involved in the progression of heart disease. However, the activation of the nerve remodeling related genes in radiation-induced heart disease is still lacking. METHODS: In this study, C57BL/J mice was anesthetized by intraperitoneal injection with pentobarbital sodium (2%, 40 mg/kg), and radiation was delivered using a cobalt-60 (60Co) teletherapy unit (Cirus). When the mice were anesthetized, none of them showed the signs of peritonitis, pain, or discomfort. T

Renal Effects of Intensive Volume Removal in Heart Failure Patients With Preexisting Worsening Renal Function.

Background The relationship between intensive volume removal in acute decompensated heart failure patients with preexisting worsening renal function (WRF) and renal tubular injury, postdischarge renal function, and clinical outcomes is unknown. Methods and Results We used data from the multicenter CARRESS-HF trial (Cardiorenal Rescue Study in Acute Decompensated Heart Failure) that randomized patients with acute decompensated heart failure and preexisting WRF to intensive volume removal with stepped pharmacological therapy or fixed rate ultrafiltration. Patients in the urinary renal tubular in

Effect of myocardial protection during beating heart surgery with right sub-axiliary approach.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac troponin-I (cTnI) is one of the three regulatory subunits of the cardiac troponin which has the high sensibility and specificity of responding to myocardial injury. Studies have demonstrated that cTnI is released into the blood stream within hours following acute myocardial reperfusion injury. The clinical utility of cTnI for the assessment of myocardial damage is that it is more specific than creatine kinase MB (CKMB). This study investigated cTnI as a sensitive marker of myocardial reperfusion injury and its clinical value on beating heart surgery with right sub-axiliary

Metabolic changes during cardiac regeneration in the axolotl.

BACKGROUND: The axolotl is a prominent model organism of heart regeneration due to its ability to anatomically and functionally repair the heart after an injury that mimics human myocardial infarction. In humans, such an injury leads to permanent scarring. Cardiac regeneration has been linked to metabolism and the oxygenation state, but so far, these factors remain to be detailed in the axolotl model. In this descriptive study, we have investigated metabolic changes that occurred during cardiac regeneration in the axolotl. RESULTS: We describe systemic and local cardiac metabolic changes afte

A Bi-Layer Hydrogel Cardiac Patch Made of Recombinant Functional Proteins.

The development of minimally invasive cardiac patches, either as hemostatic dressing or treating myocardial infarction, is of clinical significance but remains a major challenge. Designing such patches often requires simultaneous consideration of several material attributes, including bioabsorption, non-toxicity, matching the mechanic properties of heart tissues, and working efficiently in wet and dynamic environments. Using genetically engineered multi-domain proteins, a printed bi-layer proteinaceous hydrogel patch for heart failure treatments is reported. The intrinsic self-healing nature o

Induction of Wnt signaling antagonists and p21-activated kinase enhances cardiomyocyte proliferation during zebrafish heart regeneration.

Heart regeneration occurs by dedifferentiation and proliferation of pre-existing cardiomyocytes (CMs). However, the signaling mechanisms by which injury induces CM renewal remain incompletely understood. Here, we find that cardiac injury in zebrafish induces expression of the secreted Wnt inhibitors, including Dickkopf 1 (Dkk1), Dkk3, secreted Frizzled-related protein 1 (sFrp1), and sFrp2, in cardiac tissue adjacent to injury sites. Experimental blocking of Wnt activity via Dkk1 overexpression enhances CM proliferation and heart regeneration, whereas ectopic activation of Wnt8 signaling blunts

Hydroxysafflor yellow A alleviates myocardial ischemia/reperfusion in hyperlipidemic animals through the suppression of TLR4 signaling.

Hyperlipidemia aggravates myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury through stimulating excessive inflammatory response. Therefore, blockade of inflammatory signal is a potential therapeutic management for MI/R complicated with hyperlipidemia. Hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA, a monomer extracted from Carthamus tinctorius L.), was studied in this article to address that the regulation of inflammatory signal would alleviate MI/R combined with hyperlipidemia injury. High-fat diet induced hyperlipidemia worsened MI/R mediated heart injury (elevation of infarct size, CK-MB and LDH activity), acti

Femur fractures and hemorrhagic shock: Implications for point of injury treatment.

BACKGROUND: Femur shaft fractures (FSF) are perceived as potentially life-threatening injuries due to significant blood loss. However, these injuries are rarely the sole cause of hemorrhagic shock. Clinical practice guidelines for the prehospital management of FSF are inconsistent, especially concerning the use and timing of traction splinting which is postulated to reduce bleeding. We sought to understand the association between FSF and shock, and identify risk factors for shock among casualties with FSF. METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of trauma casualties treated by Israeli Defen

Electrical Injury-Induced Complete Atrioventricular Block: Is Permanent Pacemaker Required?

A considerable percentage of electrical injuries occur as a result of work activities. Electrical injury can lead to various cardiovascular disorders: acute myocardial necrosis, myocardial ischemia, heart failure, arrhythmias, hemorrhagic pericarditis, acute hypertension with peripheral vasospasm, and anomalous, nonspecific ECG alterations. Ventricular fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia resulting from electrical injury and is the leading cause of death in electrical (especially low voltage alternating current) injury cases. Asystole, premature ventricular contractions, ventricular tach

Seipin-Mediated Lipid Droplet Formation in Cardiomyocytes Ameliorates Cardiac Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury.

Cardiac ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is an important therapeutic target for ischemic heart disease. Lipid droplets (LDs) are the key organelles involved in lipid metabolism. This study aimed to identify the LD-mediated protection against lipotoxicity in cardiac I/R injury. LD accumulation is upregulated in hearts subjected to I/R injury; however, it is insufficient to neutralize lipotoxicity or prevent cardiomyocyte death. Seipin played a central role in LD biogenesis in cardiomyocytes following I/R injury. Seipin deficiency led to reduced LD levels and exacerbated cardiac I/R injury. Whe
