Anacardic acids and (E)-2-hexenal characterized from the cashew Anacardium occidentale L. (Anacardiaceae) apple have been found to exhibit antibacterial activity against the Gram-negative bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which is now considered to cause acute gastritis. The same antibacterial compounds have also been found to inhibit urease (EC 3.5.1.5).

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to demonstrate an association between Helicobacter pylori infection, ABO blood groups and Rhesus factor; providing the association between duodenal ulcer and O group blood as well as the former and H. pylori infection.
METHODS: Three-hundred and one healthy subjects were prospectively studied. In all of them ABO blood groups and Rhesus factor were determined by standard techniques. Systemic IgG antibodies against H. pylori were assayed using a quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique (Helico-G, Porton, Cambridge, UK).
RESULTS: The overall…

The host immune response to Helicobacter pylori infection might be of importance with regard to the outcome of infection by this organism, e.g., to explain why only a proportion of infected subjects develop peptic ulcers. In this study we have analyzed the local response of different cytokines-i.e., the proinflammatory interleukin-1beta, (IL-1beta), IL-6, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and IL-8; the immunoregulatory gamma interferon (IFN-gamma); and IL-4; and the anti-inflammatory transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta)-in antral biopsy specimens from H. pylori-infected duodenal ulcer (DU) pa…

Helicobacter pylori is associated with different diseases: duodenal ulcer, rosacea, ischaemic heart disease and gastric cancer. Given the abnormal immunological response and the high prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms in diabetic patients, we conducted a study on H. pylori prevalence among these patients. We designed a case control study of a population-based cohort. Eighty insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) patients with an average age (24.05 +/- 8.3 years), and 100 control subjects (25 +/- 7.1 years) were selected to verify the seroprevalence of Helicobacter pylori in these popu…

Infection of Helicobacter pylori causes chronic gastritis and plays an important role in the pathogenesis of gastroduodenal ulceration. H. pylori has also been suggested to be involved in the genesis of adenocarcincoma and MALT lymphoma of the stomach. H. pylori infection is associated with increased gastric epithelial proliferation, which can be reversed by a successful eradication of the organism. Although the mechanisms of increased gastric epithelial proliferation is not known, the enhanced epithelial proliferation is important in developing gastric carcinoma. Whether or not H. pylori de n…

The relationship of nosocomial transmission of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) by fiberoptic gastroscopy was investigated. Hp was cultured from the materials obtained from the suction/biopsy channel (4/12 times) and biopsy forceps (3/10 times). The positive rate of Hp was increased with times undertaking endoscopy in the past in elder patients with chronic gastritis. The rate from Hp negative transforming into positive also increased with the times of receiving endoscopic follow-up in the past in patients with Hp negative chronic gastritis. The average age of Hp positive patients were older in those …

The association between the topographic distribution of Helicobacter pylori colonization, inflammation and atrophy of the gastric mucosa, and fasting gastric pH was studied in a population with high prevalence of multifocal atrophic gastritis. Increasing atrophy of the antrum was associated with decreasing H pylori colonization of the antrum itself, but increasing colonization of the corpus. Advanced atrophy was associated with high fasting gastric pH. However, after therapeutic eradication of H pylori, inflammation subsided and gastric pH decreased indicating improved acid secretion despite p…

BACKGROUND: Antral gastrin cell hyperfunction (AGCH), is a rare cause of duodenal ulcer associated with non-tumour hypergastrinaemia and acid hypersecretion.
AIM: To investigate the role of Helicobacter pylori in AGCH.
PATIENTS: Twelve AGCH patients and eight H. pyloripositive non-hypergastrinaemic duodenal ulcer patients were compared.
METHODS: Basal and peak acid outputs, gastrin-stimulation (meal and bombesin) tests, and immunohistochemistry for antral G and D cells were performed. One year after H. pylori eradication, six AGCH patients were again investigated with the same tests.

Forty-nine patients with Helicobacter pylori (Hp)-positive gastric ulcer (GU) and 39 patients with Hp-positive duodenal ulcer (DU) were studied. Before the trial and every 3 or 4 weeks, phenol red dye spraying endoscopy, the rapid urease test, biopsy specimen histology, and culture were performed to assess the ulcer stage and to detect Hp. Patients were divided into three groups: group I received lansoprazole 30 mg/d; Group II received dual therapy of lansoprazole 30 mg/day and amoxicillin (AMPC) 1 g/day or clarithromycin (CAM) 400 mg/day; and Group III received combination therapy of lansopra…

At the present, Helicobacter-associated gastritis is not considered to be an important cause of dyspeptic symptoms. Therefore, patients with dyspeptic symptoms and proven Helicobacter-gastritis are diagnosed as having functional dyspepsia, provided that Helicobacter-associated lesions like ulcers or malignancies are absent. It is controversial whether or not to treat a patient with functional dyspepsia with Helicobacter gastritis. Conclusive controlled clinical trials are lacking. If it is assumed in a given patient, that Helicobacter could be responsible for the complaints (an assumption whic…

This study examined a possible aetiological agent, namely, Helicobacter pylori, in perforated peptic ulcer disease and its relationship to persisting ulcer. Twenty-nine patients with perforated peptic ulcer underwent simple closure of the perforation at laparotomy. A 13C urea breath test carried out on the eighth day after operation was positive in 24 patients. Fourteen of 17 patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy 6 weeks after discharge from hospital had a positive 13C urea breath test. The biopsy urease test performed on mucosal samples taken at endoscopy was positive in 12 …

The seroprevalence of IgG antibodies to Helicobacter pylori (Hp-Ab) was studied in 47 patients (29M, 18F, mean age +/- SD: 62.44 +/- 12.63 years) with non-cardia gastric carcinoma using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Controls were: a) 50 healthy people well-matched with the cancer patients; b) 50 patients with dyspepsia well matched with the cancer patients. Hp-Ab were detected in 72.3% of patients with gastric carcinoma, in 68% of healthy people and in 88% of dyspeptics. No significant associations were found between H. pylori infection and gastric cancer patients as a whole (odds rati…

Helicobacter pylori appears to cause chronic active gastritis, which is characterized by infiltration by neutrophils. Leukotrienes (LTs), which are both chemotactic and cytotoxic, are produced mainly by neutrophils. We studied LT levels, H. pylori infection and neutrophils infiltration in gastric mucosa of patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia. LT levels of mucosa infected with H. pylori were higher than that in non-infected mucosa. There was a correlation between LT levels and neutrophils infiltration in H. pylori infected mucosa. H. pylori was sensitive to lipoxygenase inhibitor, AA-861, both in…
