Circumscripted pigmentations after iron injections-treatment with Q-switched laser systems.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cutaneous brown discolorations in the area of injection can be a cosmetically bothersome side effect from a parent … e first 2-4 sessions was the most impressive, especially after the application of the Nd:YAG laser. Hypopigmentation and scars did not develop. In one case hyperpigmentation appeared. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that there is an effective method of clearing persistent brown discolorations with few side effects after parenteral iron therapy, using Q-switched las …

Transcription factor hierarchy in Waardenburg syndrome: regulation of MITF expression by SOX10 and PAX3.

Waardenburg syndrome (WS) is associated with neural crest-derived melanocyte deficiency caused by mutations in either one of three transcrip … sting these mutations may act in a dominant-negative fashion. Our data support a model in which the hypopigmentation in WS, of which these factors have been implicated, results from a disruption in function of the central melanocyte transcription factor MITF.

Segmental nevus depigmentosus: analysis of 20 patients.

Achromic nevus or nevus depigmentosus is a cutaneous abnormality consisting of a hypopigmented macular lesion which can present as circumscr … ies were present in 2 of 20 children (10%). The anomalies consisted of pes cavus ipsilateral to the hypopigmentation in one child and mental retardation, seizures, and hemihypertrophy in the second. This study confirms that achromic nevus, even when distributed along Blaschko lines, is commonly a benign lesion that is associated with systemic features in a small m …

Classification of morphea (localized scleroderma).

OBJECTIVE: To classify and describe morphea (localized scleroderma). DESIGN: A review of morphea and its subtypes is presented. RESULTS: T … he cutaneous lesions eventually evolve from a sclerotic stage to a nonindurated stage, and residual hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation follows. The histologic pattern in patients with morphea is similar to that in patients with progressive systemic sclerosis. Although treatment is nonstandardized, hydroxychloroquine sulfate may be beneficial.

Ischemia of ciliary arterial circulation from ocular compression.

Two patients developed unilateral central retinal artery and posterior ciliary artery occlusions related to ocular compression during general anesthesia. One patient had evidence of extensive choroidal ischemia with diffuse hypopigmentation, pigmentary mottling of the posterior pole, and disc edema. Electroretinography showed diminution of the A and B waves. The other patient showed patchy choroidal ischemia with subsequent development of wedge-shaped areas of pigmentary atrophy and mottling in the midperiphery. Iridocyclitis and prolonged hypotony were also present. Retinal and posterior cili…

Beneficial Effects of Near-Infrared Light Photobiomodulation in Linear Morphea: A Case Report.

Background: Linear morphea is a variant of scleroderma limited to the skin and underlying tissues secondary to an autoimmune inflammation le … tobiomodulation treatments. Results: The patient had excellent cosmesis without textural changes or hypopigmentation despite her darker skin complexion (Fitzpatrick phototype III) after tri-weekly treatments for 8 months. Conclusions: Linear morphea, therefore, may be potentially amenable to home use light-based therapy by using nonthermal nonablative 940 nm photo …

Diagnosis and treatment of vitiligo in a sub-adult eastern black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis michaeli).

A captive-born female sub-adult Eastern black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis michaeli) developed areas of non-ulcerated, non-pruritic depigmen … al region with an estimated 15% of the skin affected. Facial fold skin biopsies revealed multifocal hypopigmentation with melanin incontinence and mild perivascular lymphohistiocytic dermatitis. The gross appearance and histologic lesions were consistent with vitiligo. Treatment with UV-B narrowband phototherapy was performed on the lateral thighs, lateral elbows, …

Hypopigmented Junctional BAP1-Inactivated Melanocytoma: A Paradigm Shift.

Since their original description by Wiesner et al., the spectrum of clinical, histopathologic, and molecular findings of BAP1 (BRCA1-associated protein 1)-inactivated melanocytomas has been more fully characterized. Herein, we report an exceptional presentation of multiple junctional melanocytic BAP1-inactivated melanocytomas with a clinically hypopigmented appearance in a patient. Targeted DNA sequencing demonstrated the same BAP1 frameshift mutation (BAP1 p.R59f) in three different lesions. One of the specimens also displayed two truncating mutations in NF1 (NF1 p.Q129* and NF1 p.Q1801*) at

Multiple Abnormal Cutaneous Findings in a Patient With Hypomelanosis of Ito Undergoing General Anesthesia.

Hypomelanosis of Ito (HI), a neurocutaneous syndrome, is characterized by skin depigmentation and skeletal, muscular, central nervous system, cardiac, and renal manifestations. A wide variety of cutaneous manifestations besides depigmentation have been reported. Herein we describe a 23-year-old woman with HI whose extracutaneous symptoms included severe mental and motor impairment, convulsions, and deformity of the orofacial region. She also had severe obesity, asthma, multiple allergies, and skin hypersensitivity. Although no extracutaneous manifestations were problematic during perioperative

Discovery of resident memory T cells in inflammatory vitiligo: A case report.

RATIONALE: The purpose of this report was to describe resident memory cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) + T cells may contribute to the progression of inflammatory vitiligo. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 32-year-old male has a stable vitiligo for 1 year, then some patches present inflammatory erythema. Two years later, the inflammatory patches enlarged and joined together, and the remaining 2 common patches shows repigmentation and no change respectively. Both CD69 + CD8 + T cells and CD103 + CD8 + T cells showed marked increase in inflammatory vitiligo than common vitiligo. DIAGNOSIS: Histological f

GATA3 ameliorates melanocyte injuries in vitiligo through SIRT3-mediated HMGB1 deacetylation.

Vitiligo is a skin depigmentation disorder. GATA3 expression is downregulated in vitiligo patients, and its role and regulatory mechanism in vitiligo are unclear. GATA3 and HMGB1 levels were detected by qRT-PCR in peripheral blood cells of vitiligo patients and healthy controls, as well as H2 O2 -treated PIG1 cells. Their expression correlation was assessed by Pearson analysis. qRT-PCR, MTT assay, Ki67 immunostaining, flow cytometry, ELISA and Western blot were applied to determine GATA3 expression, cell survival, cell proliferation, cell apoptosis, melanin contents, and melanin-related protei

A novel ENPP1 mutation identified in a multigenerational family affected by Cole disease.

Cole disease is a rare autosomal dominant genodermatosis with only five cases published in literature since its first description in 1976. We report a case of a 3-year-old boy of Italian ancestry who presented with hypopigmented skin patches on the upper extremities and multiple yellowish, firm papules and small plaques on his palms and soles. There were similar findings in the family, extending back at least four generations. Whole exome sequence analysis revealed a novel variant of the ENPP1 gene mutation, which has not been previously reported to be associated with Cole disease. Although th
