Illusory movement of stationary stimuli in the visual periphery: evidence for a strong centrifugal prior in motion processing.

Visual input is remarkably diverse. Certain sensory inputs are more probable than others, mirroring statistical regularities of the visual environment. The visual system exploits many of these regularities, resulting, on average, in better inferences about visual stimuli. However, by incorporating prior knowledge into perceptual decisions, visual processing can also result in perceptions that do not match sensory inputs. Such perceptual biases can often reveal unique insights into underlying mechanisms and computations. For example, a prior assumption that objects move slowly can explain a wid

Palatal height and dental arch dimensions in Turner syndrome karyotypes.

The aim of this project was to study the impact from Turner syndrome (TS) karyotype and age on dental arch morphology and palatal height and to compare the variables in TS with reference data from non-TS females with normal occlusion. Plaster casts from 76 females with TS (6-50 years) were analysed with respect to dentoalveolar arch dimensions and palatal height. The TS females were divided into the karyotype categories: i) 45,X ii) 45,X/46,XX iii) isochromosome, and iv) other. The 45,X/46,XX karyotype exhibited fewer statistically significant variables differing from the reference group compa

Ocular dryness excites two classes of corneal afferent neurons implicated in basal tearing in rats: involvement of transient receptor potential channels.

This study reports the findings of two classes of corneal afferents excited by drying of the cornea (dry responses) in isoflurane-anesthetized rats: cold-sensitive (CS; 87%) and cold-insensitive (CI; 13%) neurons. Compared with CI neurons, CS neurons showed significantly higher firing rates over warmer corneal temperatures (~31-15°C) and greater responses to menthol, drying, and wetting of the cornea but lower responses when hyperosmolar solutions were applied to the ocular surface. We proposed that the dry responses of these corneal afferents derive from cooling and an increased osmolarity of

Interruption of visually perceived forward motion in depth evokes a cortical activation shift from spatial to intentional motor regions.

Forward locomotion generates a radially expanding flow of visual motion which supports goal-directed walking. In stationary mode, wide-field visual presentation of optic flow stimuli evokes the illusion of forward self-motion. These effects illustrate an intimate relation between visual and motor processing. In the present fMRI study, we applied optic flow to identify distinct interfaces between circuitries implicated in vision and movement. The dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) was expected to contribute to wide-field forward motion flow (FFw), reflecting a pathway for externally triggered motor c

Using mirror visual feedback and virtual reality to treat fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by long term body-wide pain and tender points in joints, muscles and soft tissues. Other symptoms include chronic fatigue, morning stiffness, and depression. It is well known that these symptoms are exacerbated under periods of high stress. When pain becomes severe enough, the mind can enter what is known as a dissociative state, characterized by depersonalization - the feeling of detachment from one's physical body and the illusion of watching one's physical body from outside. In evolutionary terms, dissociative states are thought to be an adaptive me

Reduced binocular depth inversion in regular cannabis users.

The binocular depth inversion illusion (BDII) has been shown to be a sensitive measure of impaired visual information processing under conditions including cannabinoid-intoxicated states, alcohol withdrawal, sleep deprivation, and in patients with positive symptoms of schizophrenia. This study assessed whether the BDII could detect subtle cognitive impairment due to regular cannabis use by comparing 10 regular cannabis users and 10 healthy controls from the same community sources, matched for age, sex, and premorbid IQ. Subjects were also compared on measures of executive functioning, memory,

A neural model of smooth pursuit control and motion perception by cortical area MST.

Smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEMs) are eye rotations that are used to maintain fixation on a moving target. Such rotations complicate the interpretation of the retinal image, because they nullify the retinal motion of the target, while generating retinal motion of stationary objects in the background. This poses a problem for the oculomotor system, which must track the stabilized target image while suppressing the optokinetic reflex, which would move the eye in the direction of the retinal background motion (opposite to the direction in which the target is moving). Similarly, the perceptual

Reversal of vision metamorphopsia: clinical and anatomical characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Metamorphopsia is a visual illusion that distorts the size, shape, or inclination of objects. Reversal of vision metamorphopsia (RVM) is a rare transient form of metamorphopsia described as an upside-down, 180 degrees rotation of the visual field in the coronal plane. The pathophysiological characteristics of RVM remain unclear. DESIGN: Patients with RVM had a complete neurologic examination during or shortly after an episode of metamorphopsia, with particular emphasis on gaze disorders, visual fields, visually guided hand movements, and perceptual or cognitive deficits. The contribution of videostroboscopy in daily ENT practice.

Videostroboscopy has now left specialized voice laboratories and must be made available to general ENT practice. It is based on an optical illusion giving the impression of slow motion from a series of successive vocal cycles but it is the least awkward system to examine the movement of vocal folds while waiting for the development of very high speed video recordings which would enable to visualize a real single cycle. The equipment comprises a stroboscope, a CCD type of camera, a video recorder, a microphone, a monitor or television screen and rigid optics and/or a fiberscope. An examination

[Clinical and epidemiological studies on inpatients with dementia].

We have studied 97 patients with dementia who have been discharged from our hospital and 106 inpatients with dementia who have been admitted during last two years in our hospital. The diagnosis of dementia was done according to the criteria of DSM-III. Based on their clinical course, neurological signs, Hachinski's ischemic score and neuroradiological findings, we divided patients into 4 groups, [senile dementia of the Alzheimer type (SDAT), vascular dementia (VD), unclassified dementia and other dementias which includes dementia with Parkinson's disease or motor neuron disease, etc.]. Action-effect proximity, order, and predictability differentially modulate electrophysiological responses and explicit judgements of agency.

Attenuation of neural responses to self- versus externally generated stimuli is widely considered an implicit marker of the Sense of Agency and often interpreted within predictive processing and comparator frameworks. Agency is thought to arise from the integration of multiple cues, including action-effect timing and outcome predictability. How these factors jointly shape electrophysiological correlates of agency remains unclear. In this study, we manipulated the temporal relationship and pitch congruency of sounds generated by button presses to examine their effects on explicit agency judgmen

Misbeliefs About Gambling in a Convenience Sample from the General Population.

We examined knowledge about the role of randomness in gambling and the principle of independence of events, in a community sample. We also investigated whether this knowledge varies according to gender and age. A convenience sample of 1257 residents in French-speaking Switzerland, aged 18-88 years (28.5% of women) completed a short online questionnaire. This assessed the perceived role of human skills in four different games as well as beliefs relating to the principle of independence of events. The results show that 19.5% of the respondents perceived Roulette as a game for which the outcome i

Motion-induced positional biases in the flash-lag configuration.

When both stationary and moving objects are present in the visual field, localizing objects in space may become difficult, as shown by illusory phenomena such as the Fröhlich effect and the flash-lag effect. Despite the efforts to decipher how motion and position information are combined to form a coherent visual representation, a unitary picture is still lacking. In the flash-lag effect, a flash presented in alignment with a moving stimulus is perceived to lag behind it. We investigated whether this relative spatial localization (i.e., judging the position of the flash relative to that of the

Blood-injection-injury fears: harm- vs. disgust-relevant selective outcome associations.

There is increasing evidence that blood-injection-injury (BII) phobia is qualitatively different from the other specific phobias in the sense that phobic distress takes the form of disgust rather than (threat-induced) fear. Following this, we tested the relative importance of harm and disgust-related associative biases in BII-fear. High (n=25) and low (n=27) fearful individuals saw a series of fear-relevant (blood-related) and fear-irrelevant (rabbit and flower) slides which were randomly paired with either a harm-related outcome, a disgust-related outcome, or nothing. Preexperimentally, parti

The pursuit of Leonardo's constraint.

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) identified two stimulus situations that cannot be painted faithfully on a canvas: (a) when two objects are located in the same direction with respect to the painter's head, and (b) when parts of a surface are visible to one eye, but occluded from the other eye. He analysed these situations in terms of rays being emitted from the two eyes and, aside from the origin of the rays, the projective geometry he used was correct. His analyses showed that what can be seen from two vantage points cannot be represented on a canvas, because a 'correct' painting must be created

Spatial attention is attracted in a sustained fashion toward singular points in the optic flow.

While a single approaching object is known to attract spatial attention, it is unknown how attention is directed when the background looms towards the observer as s/he moves forward in a quasi-stationary environment. In Experiment 1, we used a cued speeded discrimination task to quantify where and how spatial attention is directed towards the target superimposed onto a cloud of moving dots. We found that when the motion was expansive, attention was attracted towards the singular point of the optic flow (the focus of expansion, FOE) in a sustained fashion. The effects were less pronounced when

Local and global motion after-effects are both enhanced in migraine, and the underlying mechanisms differ across cortical areas.

Visual after-effects are illusions that occur after prolonged viewing of visual displays (pattern adaptation). The motion after-effect (MAE), for example, is an illusory impression of motion that is seen after viewing moving displays. After-effects have been used extensively in basic vision research as well as in clinical settings, and have been reported to be enhanced in migraine. Pattern adaptation is a cortical phenomenon that reflects both cellular mechanisms acting within individual neurons and specific interactions between groups of neurons activated by the adapting display. A remarkable…

Electrophysiological indexes of illusory contours perception in humans.

The present study investigated brain mechanisms underlying the perception of illusory contours, using recordings of event-related potentials of the brain (ERPs) in right-handed individuals. Forty different stimuli were presented randomly 1600 times in foveal vision; twenty of them produced the perception of illusory contours of a Kanizsa square, the remaining were obtained rotating outwards the inducers and they did not produce any illusory percept. Half of them had white inducers on a black background and vice versa; half of them were symmetrical and the other half asymmetrical. In lateral oc
