Machine Learning for Nuclear Mechano-Morphometric Biomarkers in Cancer Diagnosis.

Current cancer diagnosis employs various nuclear morphometric measures. While these have allowed accurate late-stage prognosis, early diagnosis is still a major challenge. Recent evidence highlights the importance of alterations in mechanical properties of single cells and their nuclei as critical drivers for the onset of cancer. We here present a method to detect subtle changes in nuclear morphometrics at single-cell resolution by combining fluorescence imaging and deep learning. This assay includes a convolutional neural net pipeline and allows us to discriminate between normal and human bre

Evaluation of a large adrenal carcinoma with 3D reconstruction of computed tomography images: A case report and literature review.

Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is an extremely rare disease caused by a cancerous growth in the adrenal cortex. Although most of adrenal tumors are benign, the functional ACC is malignant resulting in endocrine dysfunction and necessitates surgical removal. Retroperitoneal laparoscope adrenalectomy is often used to perform adrenal gland surgery. Here, we reported a case of huge ACC with the size of 6.8 cm × 5.2 cm. To achieve better surgical outcome, we integrated 3D reconstructed CT images into a dynamic video for preoperative planning and intraoperative guiding to resect the diseased adrenal

Exploration of analysis methods for diagnostic imaging tests: problems with ROC AUC and confidence scores in CT colonography.

BACKGROUND: Different methods of evaluating diagnostic performance when comparing diagnostic tests may lead to different results. We compared two such approaches, sensitivity and specificity with area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (ROC AUC) for the evaluation of CT colonography for the detection of polyps, either with or without computer assisted detection. METHODS: In a multireader multicase study of 10 readers and 107 cases we compared sensitivity and specificity, using radiological reporting of the presence or absence of polyps, to ROC AUC calculated from confidence sco

Describing congenital heart disease by using three-part segmental notation.

The segmental classification of congenital heart disease, first conceptualized nearly 50 years ago, is now well established. The Van Praagh classification system, in particular, is commonly used throughout North America to facilitate communication between physicians from various specialties who are involved in diagnosing and managing congenital cardiovascular abnormalities. In the Van Praagh system, a three-part notation consisting of letters separated by commas and encompassed by a set of braces is used to succinctly describe the visceroatrial situs, the orientation of the ventricular loop, a

Emerging ideas: Novel 3-D quantification and classification of cam lesions in patients with femoroacetabular impingement.

BACKGROUND: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) can lead to labral injury, osseous changes, and even osteoarthritis. The literature contains inconsistent definitions of the alpha angle and other nonthree-dimensional (3-D) radiographic measures. We present a novel approach to quantifying cam lesions in 3-D terms. Our method also can be used to develop a classification system that describes the exact location and size of cam lesions. QUESTIONS/HYPOTHESES: We asked whether automated quantification of CAM lesions based on CT data is a reasonable way to detect CAM lesions and whether they may be cl

Computed tomography as ground truth for stereo vision measurements of skin.

Although dysesthesia is a common surgical complication, there is no accepted method for quantitatively tracking its progression. To address this, two types of computer vision technologies were tested in a total of four configurations. Surface regions on plastic models of limbs were delineated with colored tape, imaged, and compared with computed tomography scans. The most accurate system used visually projected texture captured by a binocular stereo camera, capable of measuring areas to within 3.4% of the ground-truth areas. This simple, inexpensive technology shows promise for postoperative m

Multislice CT in congenital bronchopulmonary malformations in children.

Congenital bronchopulmonary malformations encompass a wide spectrum of pathologies involving the lungs, trachea and bronchi, pulmonary vessels, and oesophagus. These developmental lesions are often isolated, but the association of two or more anomalies is not infrequent. Contrast-enhanced multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), thanks to multiplanar and 3D reconstructions, allows for detailed studies of these malformations, achieving better accuracy compared with conventional techniques such as chest X-ray, fluoroscopy, ventilation and perfusion scintigraphy and ultrasonography. MDCT is char

Focal cystic high-attenuation lesions: characterization in renal phantom by using photon-counting spectral CT--improved differentiation of lesion composition.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the capability of spectral computed tomography (CT) to improve the characterization of cystic high-attenuation lesions in a renal phantom and to test the hypothesis that spectral CT will improve the differentiation of cystic renal lesions with high protein content and those that have undergone hemorrhage or malignant contrast-enhancing transformation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A renal phantom that contained cystic lesions grouped in nonenhancing cyst and hemorrhage series and an iodine-enhancing series was developed. Spectral CT is based on new detector designs that may poss

Fibrous Dysplasia Characterization Using Lacunarity Analysis.

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a developmental anomaly in which the normal medullary space of the affected bone is replaced by fibro-osseous tissue. This condition is typically encountered in adolescents and young adults. It affects the maxillofacial region and it can often cause severe deformity and asymmetry. Therefore, accurate diagnosis is critical to determine the appropriate treatment of each case. In this sense, computed tomography (CT) is a relevant resource among the imaging techniques for correct diagnosis of this condition. Thus, in this paper, we propose to analyze fibrous dysplasia thr

Efficient B1+ modeling for fast quantification of PDFF and two-compartment T1, T2* relaxation times in abdominal MRI of steatotic patients at 1.5 T.

PURPOSE: To propose and preliminarily evaluate a rapid method with potential clinical applicability for correcting the B1+ spatial variation in quantitative abdominal MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 3D VFA method allows rapid quantification of the T1 relaxation time and is particularly suitable for abdominal imaging, but requires mapping of the B1+ field throughout the 3D volume, which is often not available on clinical MRI scanners. The proposed method, called B1MM, combines a rapid 2D mapping of the B1+ field with modelling of the excitation coil properties to generate a B1+ mapping over a

Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) minimizes interference from cellular pathology in R2* estimation of liver iron concentration.

BACKGROUND: A challenge for R2 and R2* methods in measuring liver iron concentration (LIC) is that fibrosis, fat, and other hepatic cellular pathology contribute to R2 and R2* and interfere with LIC estimation. PURPOSE: To examine the interfering effects of fibrosis, fat, and other lesions on R2* LIC estimation and to use quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) to reduce these distortions. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. PHANTOMS, SUBJECTS: Water phantoms with various concentrations of gadolinium (Gd), collagen (Cl, modeling fibrosis), and fat; nine healthy controls with no known hepatic disease

Inclusion of intracranial volume as a covariate feature improves MRI-based Alzheimer's disease classification.

OBJECTIVE: Structural MRI-based regional volumes are widely used for Alzheimer's disease (AD) classification, but inter-individual variability in intracranial volume (ICV) introduces confounding. Traditional adjustment methods use region-of-interest (ROI)/ICV ratios or residual adjustment during pre-processing, yet no consensus exists on the optimal method. This study tests whether explicitly including ICV as a covariate (ROI + ICV) improves classification compared with ratio, residual adjustment, and the unadjusted baseline. MATERIALS AND METHODS: T1-weighted MRIs from ADNI1 (n = 1423) and M

A comparison of automated lesion segmentation approaches for chronic stroke T1-weighted MRI data.

Accurate stroke lesion segmentation is a critical step in the neuroimaging processing pipeline for assessing the relationship between poststroke brain structure, function, and behavior. Many multimodal segmentation algorithms have been developed for acute stroke neuroimaging, yet few algorithms are effective with only a single T1-weighted (T1w) anatomical MRI. This is a critical gap because multimodal MRI is not commonly available due to time and cost constraints in the stroke rehabilitation setting. Although several attempts to automate the segmentation of chronic lesions on single-channel T1

Radiomics analysis of placenta on T2WI facilitates prediction of postpartum haemorrhage: A multicentre study.

BACKGROUND: Identification of pregnancies with postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) antenatally rather than intrapartum would aid delivery planning, facilitate transfusion requirements and decrease maternal complications. MRI has been increasingly used for placenta evaluation. Here, we aim to build a nomogram incorporating both clinical and radiomic features of placenta to predict the risk for PPH in pregnancies during caesarian delivery (CD). METHODS: A total of 298 pregnant women were retrospectively enrolled from Henan Provincial People's Hospital (training cohort: n = 207) and from The Third Affi

3D morphometry aids facial analysis of individuals with a childhood cancer.

A group of patients who had cancer as a child were previously found to have distinct patterns of morphological abnormalities. In this study, we investigated the added value of 3D shape analysis to characterize their facial morphology. Primarily, we showed in an objective and quantitative manner that the overall facial dysmorphism of the individuals who had had a childhood cancer was significantly greater than that of the controls. We also demonstrated how the same approach can be used to detect a similar disparity for a more localized malar region comprising customized disconnected patches def
