Neuronal responses in social-emotional information processing in impulsive aggressive individuals.

How we perceive and interpret signals from others' behavior, known as social-emotional information processing (SEIP), is key when responding to social threat. Impulsively aggressive individuals, behaviorally, demonstrate impaired SEIP for encoding relevant social stimuli, attribution of intent of the other person in the interaction, and responding negatively to potentially threatening social situations. In this study, we sought to explore how neural processing differs between healthy controls (HC) and individuals with impulsive aggressive behavior (individuals with Intermittent Explosive Disor

Elucidating poor decision-making in a rat gambling task.

Although poor decision-making is a hallmark of psychiatric conditions such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, pathological gambling or substance abuse, a fraction of healthy individuals exhibit similar poor decision-making performances in everyday life and specific laboratory tasks such as the Iowa Gambling Task. These particular individuals may provide information on risk factors or common endophenotypes of these mental disorders. In a rodent version of the Iowa gambling task--the Rat Gambling Task (RGT), we identified a population of poor decision makers, and assessed how these rat

Improvement in Domestic Violence and Aggression in Comorbid ADHD and Conduct Disorder Following Methylphenidate Initiation: A Case Report.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder (CD) are diagnoses that are frequently comorbid. CD is characterised by persistent dissocial, aggressive, and defiant behaviors that defy age-appropriate expectations. This is the case of a 15-year-old male adoptee referred to Tier 3 Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) for severe aggression, impulsivity, and domestic violence. The patient exhibited coercive control toward his mother, physical violence involving weapons, and property damage, necessitating police involvement and risking family placement breakdown

[Pathological gambling and Parkinson disease].

Pathological gambling (PG) is defined by the DSM IV criteria as inappropriate, persistent, and maladaptive gambling behavior that has repercussions on family, personal, and professional life. It is classified as an impulse control disorder and is widely understood as a nonpharmacological addiction. PG has been reported as a complication in the treatment of Parkinson disease (PD). The prevalence of PG in PD has been reported to range between 1.7 and 7% compared to a prevalence of approximately 1% in the general population. Though there is no survey that indicates the prevalence of PG in Japanes

Emotional Reactivity and Proactive Inhibition in NSSI Adolescents Under Negative Emotion Induction.

This study examined proactive inhibitory control and its links to self-reported traits in adolescents with and without nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) under negative emotion. Forty-one adolescents (20 NSSI, 21 controls) completed impulsivity and alexithymia measures, watched a negative film clip, and performed a stop-signal task. Results showed that the NSSI group had higher trait impulsivity and alexithymia, and blunted emotional reactivity after mood induction. In the task, they did not proactively prolong go-trial reaction times to prepare for stop signals, yet their commission error rate on

Sustained attention and impulsivity in children with Tourette syndrome: comorbidity and confounds.

We sought to determine whether Tourette syndrome (TS) was related to attentional disturbance independent of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS), two comorbid conditions associated with attentional problems in other populations. Participants were 74 children [21 with uncomplicated TS (TS-Only), 14 with TS and ADHD (TS-ADHD), 21 with ADHD, and 18 controls]. Impaired sustained attention and impulsivity on a Continuous Performance Task were uncommon in the TS-Only group, but common in TS-ADHD and ADHD. The TS-ADHD group was less impulsive than th

A review of lithium effects on inhibitory processes in animals.

Lithium counteracts impulsivity and aggression in affective disorders, two emotion-related facets of inhibitory control. The question arises as to whether lithium affects inhibitory processes in affective and cognitive domains in animals. The effects of lithium were compared with placebo on learning tasks and tests of exploratory activity predominantly in rats and mice. There is evidence from a few studies that lithium facilitates inhibitory processes in regard to perseverative responding in left-right alternation and hole-board learning, premature responding in serial reaction time, delay-dis

Aversive conditioning is impaired in impulsive individuals: A study on learning asymmetries.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Appetitive and aversive conditioning are thought to be involved in the development and maintenance of mental disorders including anxiety, mood, eating, and substance use disorders. However, few studies measure the relative strength of appetitive and aversive associations, and their relevance to the risk of mental disorders. This study aims to address this gap. METHODS: We tested how readily healthy volunteers acquire appetitive vs. aversive associations. 150 participants associated complex 3D objects with either gain or loss and made decisions to gain or avoid losin

The associative learning roots of affect-driven impulsivity and its role in problem gambling: A replication attempt and extension of Quintero et al. (2020).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Negative/positive urgency (NU/PU) refers to the proneness to act rashly under negative/positive emotions. These traits are proxies to generalized emotion dysregulation, and are well-established predictors of gambling-related problems. We aimed to replicate a previous work (Quintero et al., 2020) showing NU to be related to faulty extinction of conditioned stimuli in an emotional conditioning task, to extend these findings to PU, and to clarify the role of urgency in the development of gambling-related craving and problems. METHODS: 81 gamblers performed an acquisition-ext

Using event-related potentials to characterize inhibitory control and self-monitoring across impulsive and compulsive phenotypes: a dimensional approach to OCD.

OBJECTIVE: "Subsyndromal" obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms (OCDSs) are common and cause impaired psychosocial functioning. OCDSs are better captured by dimensional models of psychopathology, as opposed to categorical diagnoses. However, such dimensional approaches require a deep understanding of the underlying neurocognitive drivers and impulsive and compulsive traits (ie, neurocognitive phenotypes) across symptoms. This study investigated inhibitory control and self-monitoring across impulsivity, compulsivity, and their interaction in individuals (n = 40) experiencing mild-moderate OCDS

Affective impulsivity moderates the relationship between disordered gambling severity and attentional bias in electronic gaming machine (EGM) players.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Attentional bias to gambling-related stimuli is associated with increased severity of gambling disorder. However, the addiction-related moderators of attentional bias among those who gamble are largely unknown. Impulsivity is associated with attentional bias among those who abuse substances, and we hypothesized that impulsivity would moderate the relationship between disordered electronic gaming machine (EGM) gambling and attentional bias. METHODS: We tested whether facets of impulsivity, as measured by the UPPS-P (positive urgency, negative urgency, sensation seeking, la

How structural changes in online gambling are shaping the contemporary experiences and behaviours of online gamblers: an interview study.

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, the provision of online gambling has intensified with increased access, enhanced betting markets, a broader product range, and prolific marketing. However, little research has explored how this intensification is influencing contemporary gambling experiences. This study focused on two research questions: 1) What changes in online gambling have online gamblers observed over the past decade? 2) How have these changes influenced the online gambling experiences and behaviours reported by treatment-seeking and non-treatment-seeking gamblers? METHODS: Two samples o

Psychopathy and Occurrence of Gambling Problems: The Role of Gambling Protective Strategies and Urgency.

BACKGROUND: Psychopathy has been an increasing area of clinical and personality research and is associated with numerous problematic outcomes, including pathological gambling, though this area of research is limited. The most common conceptualization of psychopathy is a two-factor model of primary and secondary psychopathy, with primary psychopathy comprising more interpersonal traits and secondary psychopathy encompassing more antisocial behaviors. Previous research has linked psychopathy to greater urgency and lower utilization of harm reduction strategies. OBJECTIVES: The current study exa

Trait impulsivity and callous-unemotional traits as predictors of inhibitory control and risky choices among high-risk adolescents.

Trait impulsivity and callous-unemotional traits are associated with behavioural problems among high-risk adolescents. While both are known to influence behaviour, the nature of their expression in high-risk behaviours, particularly those related to inhibitory control, is not well understood. In the current, preliminary study, we examined whether and how these traits predicted deficits in behaviour driven by bottom-up, automatic versus deliberate, top-down inhibitory processes among high-risk adolescents. Two go/no-go task variants, emotional and non-emotional, were used to assess reactive res

Multifaceted impulsivity as a moderator of social anxiety and cannabis use during pregaming.

Individuals may drink or use cannabis to cope with social anxiety, and drinking or using cannabis prior to social situations (e.g., pregaming) may be a way to limit the experience of anxiety when entering social settings. However, theoretical and empirical work has reported mixed associations between social anxiety and substance use, specifically alcohol and cannabis. Little work has looked at how other variables, such as impulsivity (a central component to high risk drinking such as pregaming), may shed light onto these mixed findings. College students who reported past year pregaming (n = 36

Adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome: Assessment and disabilities.

In the broader list of cognitive concerns, neuropsychological testing has shown that attentional impairment may have a specific burden in Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS). Preliminary observations have reported a subset of FMS patient screened for attention disorders fulfilling the actual diagnosis of ADHD, a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by developmentally inadequate levels of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity that might persist in adulthood. Yet, no study to date has systematically examined the history and the specific contribution of ADHD to FMS in terms of clinical impact a

Risk attitude and personality in people with multiple sclerosis facing the choice of different disease-modifying therapy scenarios.

BACKGROUND: As available disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) increase, evaluating benefit/risk presents greater difficulties, requiring people with MS (PwMS) to play crucial roles in choosing treatment. Although individual attitude toward risk may predict this evaluation, its relation to personality is little studied in MS literature. OBJECTIVE: To prospectively assess risk attitudes and personality traits of PwMS choosing a DMT. METHODS: In three Italian MS centers (2012-2015), 420 PwMS completed an ad hoc questionnaire on socio-demographic variables, personality, and standard-gamble questio
