Neonatal vitamin A supplementation for the prevention of mortality and morbidity in term neonates in low and middle income countries.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A deficiency is a major public health problem in low and middle income countries. Vitamin A supplementation in children … for term neonates from three studies did not show a statistically significant effect on the risk of infant mortality at six months in the vitamin A group compared with the control group (typical risk ratio (RR) 0.80; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.54 to 1.18; I2 = 63%). Analysis of data for all infants from 11 studies revealed no evidence of a significant reductio …

[Fertility and health in Mexico].

Fertility, health, and family planning are not independent factors, but rather involve a series of biological and social mechanisms in close interaction with one another. The impact that a high fertility rate has on health is reflected mainly in a rise in the rates of maternal and child mortality. Similarly, fertility has a greater negative effect upon the health of groups characterized by high reproductive risk, high parity, short intergenesic intervals, and unwanted pregnancies. On the other hand, family planning -and specifically the use of contraceptive methods-helps to achieve a lowering

The state of South Dakota's child: 1994.

This annual report reviews natality and infant mortality data and also reviews teenage pregnancy in South Dakota. Data for 1993 again document a declining rate of birth for South Dakota with a 3% decline in the number of births since 1990 and an 18% decline since 1980. An identical number of infants (102) died in 1993 as 1992 with neonatal mortality slightly declining and post neonatal mortality slightly increasing for the state. Rates of perinatal causes of infant death are lower in South Dakota than they are nation-wide, but are higher for congenital anomalies, sudden infant death, pneumonia…

[Epidemiology of intestinal infection and operative rehydration strategy at the Mexican Institute of Social Security].

The purpose of the study was to analyze the trend of morbidity and mortality due to intestinal infections in children under the age of 1 (in … 5% and 20%, respectively. A reduction in intestinal infections accounts for 73.2% of the decline in infant mortality and 62.6% of the decrease in mortality of preschool children. Incidence and case-fatality rates of intestinal infections also declined in both age groups. Lower morbidity and mortality rates may be due to the IMSS oral rehydration program and to the …

Contributions to protection from Streptococcus pneumoniae infection using the monovalent recombinant protein vaccine candidates PcpA, PhtD, and PlyD1 in an infant murine model during challenge.

A vaccine consisting of several conserved proteins with different functions directing the pathogenesis of pneumonia and sepsis would be preferred for protection against infection by Streptococcus pneumoniae. Infants will be the major population targeted for next-generation pneumococcal vaccines. Here, we investigated the potential efficacy provided by three recombinant pneumococcal vaccine candidate proteins--pneumococcal histidine triad D (PhtD), detoxified pneumolysin derivative (PlyD1), and pneumococcal choline-binding protein A (PcpA)--for reducing pneumonia and sepsis in an infant mouse v

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia: Part I.

The infant with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia presents many challenges to those caring for him. A thorough understanding of both anatomic and physiologic components can enable the caregiver to accurately assess the patient and employ interventions which will minimize complications. This article discusses the incidence, mortality, embryology, diagnosis, pathophysiology, and conventional management. Part II will discuss alternatives to conventional management, outcome predictors, current research, and follow-up of the infant with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

Some opportunities for biometry in promoting child health in the Third World.

The achievement of 'Health for all by the year 2000' will depend on the attention which is given to improving the health of children growing up in the Third-World countries. This paper explores some of the major areas of concern in this field--infant mortality, low birth weight, infant-feeding practices, disease and malnutrition--and indicates some opportunities for the biometrician to contribute to progress towards the target set for the year 2000.

Mortality and hospital readmissions in the first year of life after intra-uterine and neonatal blood product transfusions: A population data linkage study.

AIM: Blood product transfusions are a potentially life-saving therapy for fetal and neonatal anaemia, but there is limited population-based research on outcomes. We aimed to describe mortality, readmission and average hospital stay in the first year of life for infants with or without intra-uterine or neonatal blood product transfusions. METHODS: Linked birth, hospital and deaths data from New South Wales, Australia (January 2002-June 2014) were used to identify singleton infants (≥23 weeks' gestation, surviving to 29 days; n = 1 089 750) with intra-uterine or neonatal transfusion or no trans

Acute kidney injury in ELBW infants (<  750 grams) and its associated risk factors.

BACKGROUND: The advancement of neonatology over the past 20 years has allowed a greater number of ELBW infants to survive. However, these advancements have contributed to the increased incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) seen in this population. Understanding the risk factors for AKI in this population of ELBW infants is imperative for the successful survival of these infants since the morbidity and mortality rates from this disease are increasing. OBJECTIVES: 1) to determine the prevalence of AKI in ELBW (<  750 grams). 2) to compare the mortality rate of ELBW infants (<  750 grams) with

Child mortality in Bangladesh - why, when, where and how? A national survey-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: Updated information on the cause of childhood mortality is essential for developing policies and designing programmes targeting the major burden of disease. There is a paucity of evidence regarding the current estimates of the cause of death in Bangladesh, which is essential for reinvigorating the current policies and reshaping existing strategies to avert preventable deaths. This paper aims to address this critical evidence gap and report the cause, timing and place of death among children under-five years of age using a nationally representative sample. METHODS: The present stud

Variability in Very Preterm Stillbirth and In-Hospital Mortality Across Europe.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Stillbirth and in-hospital mortality rates associated with very preterm births (VPT) vary widely across Europe. International comparisons are complicated by a lack of standardized data collection and differences in definitions, registration, and reporting. This study aims to determine what proportion of the variation in stillbirth and in-hospital VPT mortality rates persists after adjusting for population demographics, case-mix, and timing of death. METHODS: Standardized data collection for a geographically defined prospective cohort of VPTs (22+0-31+6 weeks gestatio

Morbidity and mortality of newborn from preeclampsia mother with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia is a major cause of maternal and infant mortality in Indonesia. Several studies have investigated the association between SARS-CoV-2 infection and adverse maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes. The studies found that SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of maternal morbidity and mortality related to hypertensive disorders, including preeclampsia. However, the studies did not provide specific information on the morbidity and mortality of newborns from mothers diagnosed with preeclampsia with conjunction SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHO…

Female resistance to hypoxia: does it explain the sex difference in mortality rates?

There is currently no accepted explanation in the medical literature for the lower female total mortality rate in infancy, childhood and adulthood. We review the pediatric mortality data provided by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) and show that for causes of respiratory infant death that are apparently independent of gender (e.g., suffocation from inhalation of food or other object), there is a consistently one-third lower rate of mortality in the female than in the male. This one-third lower mortality for causes of death with a respirat

The Blalock-Taussig shunt in the first six months of life.

Because of increasing interest in the application of the Blalock-Taussig shunt in smaller infants, we reviewed the course of 18 infants aged 6 months or less who underwent this procedure. The mortality rate in 4 infants under 2 weeks of age was 50 per cent and that in those 2 weeks to 6 months of age, 28 per cent. The patency rate was 70 per cent. Because of late problems with the Waterston shunt and a comparable mortality rate, the Blalock-Taussig procedure is recommended for all infants, except perhaps those under 2 weeks of age.
