In anti-malaria operations the use of DDT for indoor residual spraying has declined substantially over the past 30years, but this insecticide is still considered valuable for malaria control, mainly because of its low cost relative to alternative insecticides. Despite the development of resistance to DDT in some populations of malaria vector Anopheles mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae), DDT remains generally effective when used for house-spraying against most species of Anopheles, due to excitorepellency as well as insecticidal effects. A 1990 cost comparison by the World Health Organization (WHO

Field investigations on the sandfly Phlebotomus orientalis (Diptera: Psychodidae), the vector of Leishmania donovani causing visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Sudan, were undertaken in two villages (Bellow and Elgamel) and Dinder National Park, to determine the protective value of bednets (polyester, 100 denier) impregnated with lambda-cyhalothrin 10 mg a.i./m2 pyrethroid insecticide. After exposure to treated netting for 30 s, P. orientalis females all died within 1 h. When field-tested in Acacia woodland, treated bednets provided complete protection from bites of the vector. Numbers of P. orien

To determine the prevalence of onchocerciasis in western Uganda following deforestation and vector control, three foci were re-examined 20 years after previous surveys. In the Ruteete focus Simulium neavei had apparently disappeared and the prevalence of onchocerciasis declined in adults from about 70% in 1971 to a standardised prevalence of 12% in 1992. An increase of population density together with extended deforestation was assumed as cause of this strong reduction. In Bugoye, a S. damnosum s.l. focus, the standardised prevalence of microfilaria carriers declined from 62% in 1972 to 4.7% i

It has become possible to control or even eradicate the Simulium fly vectors of Onchocerca volvulus, the causative organism of onchocerciasis. There are two vectors in Africa-namely, S. damnosum, characteristic of the rivers of West Africa, and S. neavei, which breeds on the carapaces of crabs in the streams of East Africa. The use of DDT applied to the water at a concentration as low as 0.1 p.p.m. for 30 minutes eliminates the larvae of Simulium. Such larvicidal methods have eradicated S. neavei from western Kenya and virtually eradicated S. damnosum from the Victoria Nile in Uganda. Excellen

Fifty-six patients suffering from chronic osteomyelitis, who attended the University of Ife Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, between November 1976 and December 1977 were studied. Poor hygiene, ignorance, sickle cell disease, and minor trauma in the form of cuts, abrasions, insect bites, and thorn-pricks were the main predisposing factors. Open fractures resulting from road accidents, and infection following surgical procedures, contributed to a lesser extent and may well become the main source of chronic bone infection in the near future. Measures are suggested for the control of the disea

The insect growth regulator tebufenozide, an ecdysone agonist, is widely used to control Helicoverpa armigera through disrupting molting and development. However, its other effects on the insect physiology remain poorly understood. This study investigates how tebufenozide modulates gut immunity, microbial homeostasis, and antiviral defense mechanisms in H. armigera larvae. Using RT-qPCR, we analyzed the expression of key immune genes following exposure to lethal (LC₅₀) and sublethal (LC₁₀, LC₂₅) concentrations of tebufenozide. Our results demonstrate that tebufenozide induced the IMD pathway t

There is a pressure to replace soybean meal in poultry diets with alternative protein sources, in order to ensure the sustainability of animal nutrition. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two insect meals on performance, ileal morphometry, organs weight and blood biochemical parameters in Japanese quail. A total of 600 seven-day-old unsexed Japanese quail were equally divided into three groups (with four replicates each). The first group was the Control group (C) without insect meals (0 g/kg). The two experimental groups received diets containing 100 g/kg of defatted mealworm

Insect-derived feed ingredients are increasingly considered alternative protein sources, but their time-dependent effects on digestive function remain unclear. This study evaluated how the duration of feeding a diet containing Cuban cricket meal (CCM) affected fecal bacterial enzyme activity and apparent nutrient digestibility in adult rabbits. Thirty-two New Zealand White male rabbits were allocated to four groups. The control group received a diet containing 14% soybean meal throughout the six-week trial, whereas experimental groups received soybean meal followed by a diet in which 10% CCM r

BACKGROUND: Reproduction is the basis of insect population growth and evolution, and encompasses ovarian development, reproductive behavior, and fecundity. Bactrocera dorsalis is a globally significant agricultural pest that is subject to quarantine, with mated females that can lay over 3000 eggs. The post-transcriptional regulation of ovarian development remains unclear. Here, miR-31b is shown to be involved in regulating Bactrocera dorsalis ovarian development.
RESULTS: CRISPR/Cas9 was used to generate miR-31b loss-of-function mutations in Bactrocera dorsalis. The removal of miR-31b resulte

Seminal fluid proteins (SFPs) in insect males are critical for reproduction, being transported into female ovary. In Nilaparvata lugens, a significant rice pest, seven spermary-specific carboxylesterases (CarEs) were found abundantly in SFPs, with over-expression in males of an imidacloprid-resistant (RES) strain compared to a susceptible (SUS) strain. This study aimed to evaluate roles of spermary-specific CarEs in N. lugens reproduction, especially in the reproduction disadvantage in RES. Sublethal doses of three insecticides significantly impacted N. lugens reproduction, concomitant with up

Artificial light at night (ALAN) threatens natural ecosystems globally. While ALAN research is increasing, little is known about how ALAN affects plants and interactions with other organisms. We explored the effects of ALAN on plant defence and plant-insect interactions using barley (Hordeum vulgare) and the English grain aphid (Sitobion avenae). Plants were exposed to 'full' or 'part' nights of 15-20 lux ALAN, or no ALAN 'control' nights, to test the effects of ALAN on plant growth and defence. Although plant growth was only minimally affected by ALAN, aphid colony growth and aphid maturation

Thymus alternans and Teucrium montanum subsp. jailae are medicinal and aromatic plants, typical of Slovakian flora, producing bioactive essential oils. In the present study, we evaluated the insecticidal potential of the essential oils, obtained by hydrodistillation from the plant aerial parts and analysed by GC-MS, as insecticidal agents. For the purpose, they were assayed against three insect species acting as agricultural pests or vectors of medical relevance, such as the common housefly, Musca domestica L., the lymphatic filariasis vector, Culex quinquefasciatus and the Egyptian cotton lea

Fumigation is required to protect cottonseed in storage and pre-shipment from insect pests and/or microorganisms. Fumigation of cottonseed with carbon disulphide (CS2), carbonyl sulphide (COS), ethanedinitrile (C2N2), ethyl formate (EF), methyl bromide (MB) and phosphine (PH3) showed that >85% of the fumigants disappeared within 5 h of exposure. COS maintained >20 mg L-1 for 24 h. After 1 day of aeration, 75%-85% of the absorbed COS and MB and 20%-40% of the absorbed CS2, EF and PH3 were released from treated cottonseed. The fumigant residues were reduced by 80% for COS, 50% for EF or MB and 2

The physiological role of carbonic anhydrases in pH and ion regulation is crucial to insect survival. We examined the toxic and neurophysiological effects of five carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (CAIs) against Aedes aegypti. The 24 h larvicidal toxicities followed this rank order of potency: dichlorphenamide > methazolamide > acetazolamide = brinzolamide = dorzolamide. Larvicidal activity increased modestly in longer exposures, and affected larvae showed attenuated responses to probing without overt tremors, hyperexcitation, or convulsions. Acetazolamide and dichlorphenamide were toxic to adults

BACKGROUND: Multipartite mitochondrial genomes are very rare in animals but have been found previously in two insect orders with highly rearranged genomes, the Phthiraptera (parasitic lice), and the Psocoptera (booklice/barklice).
RESULTS: We provide the first report of a multipartite mitochondrial genome architecture in a third order with highly rearranged genomes: Thysanoptera (thrips). We sequenced the complete mitochondrial genomes of two divergent members of the Scirtothrips dorsalis cryptic species complex. The East Asia 1 species has the single circular chromosome common to animals whi

Aedes aegypti, the principal mosquito vector of yellow fever, dengue fever and chikungunya fever virus-transmitted diseases, is an insect closely associated with humans and their housing habitats. As there is no commercially available vaccine, prevention is the most suggested form of avoiding disease spreading and a number of studies are being developed in order to give support to vector control operations. The present study reports on the identification of a trypsin inhibitor isolated from cotyledons of the Clitoria fairchildiana amazonic tree seeds, which was able to reduce by 87.93 % the ac

A series of experiments were carried out to investigate the role of proteinase enzymes in the growth of larvae of the sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina. First, instar larvae were incubated on an artificial growth media in the presence of various concentrations of inhibitors of all the major proteinase classes. Inhibitors of serine proteinases and aminopeptidases were found to cause significant growth inhibition and in some cases death of the larvae within 24 h, suggesting that these enzymes were the major classes involved in protein digestion in the gut of the insect. A second group of experiment

An insect selective neurotoxic polypeptide from venom of the scorpion Androctonus australis (AaIT, M(r) 8,000) was shown to cross the midgut … distinct segment that transports small peptides, and that employment of neurotoxic polypeptides for insect control may be feasible. Activity might be greatly improved through modification and metabolic stabilization of active peptides.

Chemical insecticides have been the primary method of mosquito control, but in recent years, mosquitoes have become resistant to these compounds. Metarhizium fungi are emerging as promising alternatives and can kill mosquitoes with a small number of spores. It was previously shown that caterpillars affected by fungal infections can attract mosquitoes. However, the mechanisms and potential applications of this attraction are lacking. Here we show that Metarhizium-colonized insect cadavers release the volatile longifolene to attract and infect healthy insects, facilitating spore dispersal. We id

In integrated pest management systems, biological and chemical controls must be compatible. The insecticide spinosad affects some non-target insects and might compromise their fitness. The objective of this study was to evaluate the histopathological and cytotoxic effects of spinosad on the salivary complex of the predatory bug Podisus nigrispinus (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae). Spinosad toxicity and insect survival were determined using six concentrations of insecticide. Ultrastructural changes and cell death of salivary glands were analyzed after P. nigrispinus exposure to spinosad LC50 (3.15 μ
