To explore the augmentation of cyclosporin-induced graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in autologous bone marrow transplantation (BMT), we conducted a phase I dose escalation trial of interferon (IFN)-alpha 2a. A total of 24 chronic carriers of HBsAg, HBeAg and hepatitis B virus (HBV)-DNA were included in a controlled trial. Two patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) were treated intramuscularly with recombinant DNA interferon-alpha 2 for 3 and 6 months, respectively. Side effects were minimal. No objective clinical response could be noted. In a patient with stable SSPE, a significant decrease in serum antimeasles antibody levels was observed. This decrease was less pronounced in another patient with evolutive SSPE. The results of this study were compared to findings published previously. The reasons for the lack of clinical efficacy of interferon in SSPE are discussed.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a common cause of acute hepatitis that results in high mortality in pregnant women and may establish chronic infections in immunocompromised patients. We demonstrate for the first time that alpha interferon (IFN-α) and ribavirin inhibit in vitro HEV replication in both a subgenomic replicon and an infectious culture system based on a genotype 3 strain.
